Applying on Taleo: how your resume is read

A Taleo career section takes you through a sequence of pages. On the Profile Upload page you can import a resume, which the system parses into available fields, or import a LinkedIn or Indeed profile where the employer allows it. You review the extracted data on the next pages, answer the employer's questions and submit.

How does applying on Taleo work?

Oracle describes a Taleo application as a flow of pages the candidate must complete. A typical flow, in Oracle's own example, runs from Profile Upload through Candidate Personal Information, Education and Work Experience to E-Signature and Review and Submit. Employers configure the pages, so yours may add or skip some.

  1. Profile Upload

Import your resume, or import a profile from a third party such as LinkedIn or Indeed when the employer has turned that on. You can also choose to fill out the online submission manually.

  2. Candidate Personal Information

First and last name, address, phone number and email address, prefilled from the import where the parser found them.

  3. Education and Work Experience

Structured entries for each school and job. Oracle notes that the Resume Upload block is shown whenever these pages are empty.

  4. Questions

Employers can add a Disqualification Questions page and other questionnaires to the flow.

  5. E-Signature, then Review and Submit

Some flows ask you to sign electronically. The last page shows the whole submission before you send it.

Which resume file formats does Taleo accept?

It depends on the employer. Oracle's Taleo documentation lists the attachment formats the system supports, among them Word (.doc and .docx), PDF, RTF, plain text, HTML, OpenOffice Writer and WordPerfect, and says system administrators decide which formats are available. On mobile, career sections can also offer Paste the resume.

Oracle also says resume parsing in Taleo is delivered by a third-party partner service. Oracle's documentation does not describe how that service reads a given file, so the safe input is a text-based file with standard headings and a date next to every job.

Pasting works when a file will not upload: the system parses the pasted text, uses it to pre-populate the application and stores it as a text file with your submission. Ruubu's plain-text download gives you a clean copy, with the same order and headings as your PDF.

What should you check after Taleo imports your resume?

Oracle says that after a resume upload you return to the flow with the data imported, and the default career-section text tells you to review the extracted information in the next steps. Check each page as you reach it: Taleo fills only the fields its import maps, and you correct the rest by hand.

  • Work Experience: one entry per job with title, employer and dates. A missing entry means the parser did not find it; add it rather than leaving the page half empty.
  • Education: school and degree in the right fields.
  • Hidden fields: Oracle notes that fields the employer does not show in the flow are still filled by the import, and you cannot correct them there. Keep your resume accurate, because what it says is what gets stored.
  • Unfinished applications: if you stop part way, valid imported data is saved to your record, but the application stays flagged as incomplete until you finish it.
  • Re-imports: importing from LinkedIn or Indeed again adds new structured data; look for repeated entries afterwards.

What are Taleo disqualification questions?

Taleo has a Disqualification Questions block that employers can put in the flow. Oracle's guide says the system then disqualifies candidates, or marks them for review, when they do not meet the minimum requirements, and a disqualified candidate sees a modified Thank You page. Read each of these questions slowly.

These answers come from you, not from your resume, and they are checked before a recruiter looks at the rest. With Ruubu for Chrome, work authorization, sponsorship and salary answers are filled only from the answers you saved yourself, exactly as saved.

How does Ruubu help with a Taleo application?

Ruubu gives you a clean resume to import and a plain-text copy to paste. On Taleo, Ruubu for Chrome uses its general field matcher, labelled Beta: after you check a preview it fills the fields it recognises and attaches your resume PDF, and you move through the pages and submit yourself.

Taleo flows are long and configured per employer, so look each page over after filling. To see whether your file gives a parser clean text, open What a parser reads in the editor's Download menu; it shows the name, contact details, headings and jobs a rule-based parser reads from your exported PDF and DOCX.

The ATS-friendly resume checklist covers the date formats and headings that keep each job in its own entry. To start from a single-column layout, open the ATS resume builder.

What Ruubu for Chrome does on Taleo

Questions about Taleo

Why does Taleo make me retype my work history?

Taleo fills only the fields its import maps, and the employer decides which pages appear. When Education or Work Experience is empty, the Resume Upload step comes back. Fill in what is missing by hand and check the imported entries.

Can I paste my resume instead of uploading it on Taleo?

Where the employer enables it, yes. The Paste the resume option parses plain text, and the pasted text is stored as a text file with your application. Ruubu's plain-text download gives you a clean copy to paste.

Is Taleo the same as Oracle Recruiting Cloud?

Both are Oracle recruiting products, but they are separate systems: Taleo career sections run on taleo.net addresses and Oracle Recruiting Cloud on oraclecloud.com addresses, each with its own application flow.

Which file should I upload to Taleo?

Whichever the upload page lists, since administrators choose the formats. A text-based PDF or DOCX in one column, with standard headings, keeps each job in its own entry.
