What should a cover letter include?
A cover letter should say which job you want, why you fit it and why this company, in three or four short paragraphs. The strongest letters connect two or three things you've done to what the job ad asks for, instead of repeating your resume line by line.
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Opening | Names the role and gives one reason you fit it |
| Evidence | Two or three things you've done that match the posting |
| Why them | One honest line about the company or the work |
| Close | Asks for a conversation and thanks the reader |
How to write a cover letter that gets a reply
Read the ad first
Mark the two or three requirements the posting repeats or puts first. Your letter should answer those, not everything.
Match each one with proof
For each requirement, write one sentence about something you've done that shows it. Short and specific beats long and general.
Make it yours
Fill every [add: …] gap, read the letter aloud and cut anything you would not say in an interview. Address it to a person if you can find the name.

I am writing to apply for the position advertised on your website.

I'd like to apply for the office manager role. For five years I've run the front desk of a busy dental clinic.
Evidence

I have excellent organizational skills.
Specific
Last year I moved our appointment book online for three dentists, and phone bookings dropped as patients started booking themselves.

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

I'd be glad to talk about how I'd run the front office at Northwind Dental. Thank you for reading.
Cover letter mistakes recruiters notice
Repeating the resume
The recruiter has your resume. Use the letter to connect a few points to this job and explain anything the resume can't.
Talking only about yourself
"This role would help my career" is about you. Say what you'd do for them, then why the job matters to you.
Sending a template
A letter that could go to any company reads like one. Name the company and the role and mention one real detail.
Going over one page
Most cover letters are read in under a minute. Aim for 200 to 300 words.
Questions about cover letters
Do I still need a cover letter?
Not for every job, but many postings ask for one, and a short, specific letter can help when your resume doesn't explain everything, such as a career change or a move.
How long should a cover letter be?
Three or four short paragraphs, about 200 to 300 words. The draft from this tool is shorter on purpose, so you can add what matters most.
Does the generator invent experience?
No. It is told to use only the three points, the job title and the company you give it. Where a detail is missing, it leaves an [add: …] note instead of making one up.
What is the difference from the cover letter builder in the app?
This page writes a short draft from three points. The builder in the app, part of Resume Pass, writes a full letter from your whole resume and the job ad and lets you edit, restyle and download it.
Who should I address the letter to?
Use the hiring manager's name if the posting or the company's site gives it. If not, "Dear Hiring Manager" or the team name is fine.
