Applying in the UK
How to apply for jobs in the UK
British hiring rewards evidence. Employers want a concise CV, a covering letter that answers their advert point by point, and interview answers built on real examples. Recruitment agencies play a bigger part than in many countries, and every employer must check your right to work before you start. Here is how each stage works, with the official guidance behind it.
How do you apply for a job in the UK?
Find the role on a job board, a recruiter's site, an employer's careers page or GOV.UK Find a job, then send a tailored CV and a covering letter of three to five paragraphs. Shortlisted candidates usually face a competency interview using the STAR method. Offers are often conditional on references, and the employer checks your right to work before you start.[1][3][4][8][10]
Applying in the UK at a glance
| Topic | Usual in the UK |
|---|---|
| The document | Called a CV. Contact details, a short personal statement, work history, education, references or "available on request". |
| Leave out | Your age, date of birth, marital status and nationality. Skip the photo unless an employer asks for one. |
| Covering letter | Usually three to five paragraphs, linking your experience to what the advert asks for. |
| Where roles are advertised | Reed, Indeed, Totaljobs, CV-Library, LinkedIn, agencies and careers pages; Prospects and Find an apprenticeship for starters; GOV.UK Find a job; Civil Service Jobs and NHS Jobs for public roles. |
| Interviews | Competency questions answered with STAR: situation, task, action, result. |
| Health questions | Not allowed before an offer, apart from narrow exceptions such as arranging adjustments. |
| Offers | Often conditional, for example on suitable references. |
| Right to work | Checked by the employer before you start; a share code or an accepted document. |
Where UK jobs are advertised
Combine one or two general boards with the sites built for your situation: LinkedIn for professional roles, Prospects or the apprenticeship service if you are starting out, and the public-sector sites if you want to work for government or the NHS. Many employers also recruit through agencies. Here is what each site is for.
| Site | Type | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Reed | General job board | Founded in 1995 as the first UK recruitment website run by a recruitment agency; carries vacancies from private and public-sector employers and from agencies, plus courses and career advice. |
| Indeed | International job site | Runs a UK site; use it for a broad search. Read the full advert before using quick apply: many ask for a covering letter or screening answers. |
| White-collar and corporate | Professional and management roles, recruiter outreach and referrals. Keep job titles and dates identical to your CV. | |
| Totaljobs | General job board | A UK board, part of The Stepstone Group, with filters for permanent, part-time, temporary and contract work. |
| CV-Library | General job board | UK vacancies searchable by distance from your town, with CV registration so recruiters can find you and job alerts by email. |
| Recruitment agencies | Office, finance, tech, healthcare, temporary work | Register with two or three agencies in your field and keep the consultant updated on interviews elsewhere. |
| Prospects | Students and graduates | Graduate jobs, work experience and internships, plus job profiles and advice on what you can do with your degree. |
| Find an apprenticeship (GOV.UK) | Apprenticeships | The government service for apprenticeship vacancies in England: register a profile, search and apply. You must be 16 or over. |
| GOV.UK Find a job | Public job search | The government's free search for full- and part-time jobs in England, Scotland and Wales; Northern Ireland runs its own service. Save searches and turn on email alerts. |
| Civil Service Jobs | Public sector | UK government departments and agencies. Applications follow Success Profiles: the advert lists which elements will be assessed. |
| NHS Jobs | Public sector (health) | The NHS's own job site; create an account to search and apply. |
| Employers' careers pages | Direct applications | Large firms, universities and councils recruit on their own systems; a plain layout reads best there. |

What a British CV and covering letter should do
The National Careers Service describes a CV built from contact details, a short introduction, education, work history and references, and advises leaving out your age, date of birth, marital status and nationality. Keep the personal statement to a few lines that say who you are, what you are good at and what you want next, then let each job entry show results rather than duties. Our UK CV format guide covers length, layout and what else to drop.
The covering letter matters more in the UK than in many markets. It is usually three to five paragraphs: introduce yourself and say how you found the role, show the skills and experience that match what the employer wants, and close by thanking them and saying how to reach you. You can also use it to explain a gap in employment. The cover letter builder drafts one from your CV for the specific advert.[2][3]
Public-sector applications and competency questions
The Civil Service recruits using Success Profiles, which combine five elements: behaviours, strengths, ability, experience and technical skills. The job advert says which ones will be assessed, and you may be asked for written examples of the behaviours it lists. The published guidance recommends structuring those examples with the STAR method.
Many private employers and the NHS use the same logic, even when they do not use the name. Before you write a single line, list the essential and desirable criteria from the person specification and match each one to a concrete example from your work.[5][6]
Applying for a job in the UK, step by step
Treat a closing date as a deadline, not a target: send the application as soon as it is ready.
- 01
Decode the advert
Copy the essential criteria into a list. Each one needs a matching line in your CV or covering letter.
- 02
Tailor the CV
Reorder bullet points so the most relevant results come first and use the advert's own terms for skills you have. Check your resume to see how screening software reads it.
- 03
Write the covering letter
Three to five paragraphs addressed to a named person where possible. For a quick first draft, try the free cover letter generator.
- 04
Complete forms and tests
Larger employers add screening questions, online tests or a written statement. Answer each criterion separately and keep within word limits.
- 05
Prepare STAR examples
Write six to eight short stories covering teamwork, problem solving, leadership and dealing with pressure. Rehearse them with the interview prep kit.
- 06
Handle the offer
Check salary, hours, notice period and any conditions, such as references, in writing before you hand in your notice.
What UK interviews are like
- Expect a first call or video screen, then one or two interviews with the hiring manager and colleagues.
- Acas advises employers to ask every applicant the same questions where possible, so well-prepared examples pay off.
- If you need a reasonable adjustment to attend, such as step-free access or extra time, say so: employers must ask anyone they invite whether they need one.
- Answer with STAR: the situation, the task you had, the action you took and the result, including what you learned.
- Smart, understated clothing is the safe default; adjust down for a start-up where the advert or your contact suggests it.
Following up, talking about pay and references
A brief thank-you email after the interview is polite but optional. If you have heard nothing by the date they gave you, one short follow-up is fine; agencies will usually chase for you. Keep a log of where you applied and when, and the job tracker will remind you which applications are waiting for a reply.
If the advert shows a salary or a band, treat it as your anchor. If not, have a researched annual figure ready, quote it as a gross amount and remember that pension contributions, holiday above the minimum and flexible working can all be part of the discussion. Acas guidance notes that a job offer can carry conditions the candidate must meet before starting, such as suitable references, and that the employer may withdraw the offer if they are not met, so line up referees early.[8]
Health questions, right to work and visas
Section 60 of the Equality Act 2010 says an employer must not ask about an applicant's health before offering work, or before putting them in a pool of candidates for future offers. Narrow exceptions cover things like arranging adjustments for an assessment, checking a function intrinsic to the job and diversity monitoring.
Every employer must check that you are allowed to work in the UK before employing you. If you are not a British or Irish citizen, you can usually prove it online with a share code, or with an eligible immigration document. People coming from abroad often need a visa: the Skilled Worker route requires a confirmed job offer from an employer approved by the Home Office and a certificate of sponsorship for the role, so the job comes first, then the visa application.[9][10][11][12]
Common mistakes in UK applications
- Writing a generic covering letter that never mentions the employer's criteria.
- Adding a date of birth, marital status or nationality, which official careers advice says to leave out.
- Answering competency questions with what you would do instead of what you did.
- Ignoring the person specification on public-sector forms: unanswered criteria usually mean no shortlist.
- Accepting a sponsored role abroad without confirming the employer can issue a certificate of sponsorship.

Frequently asked questions
- Do UK employers expect a photo on a CV?
- There is no need for one. Official careers advice builds a CV from contact details, an introduction, education, work history and references, and suggests leaving out age, date of birth, marital status and nationality. The UK CV format guide explains the rest.
- How long should a UK covering letter be?
- Usually three to five short paragraphs: how you found the role, the experience that matches the advert, and a closing line with thanks and how to contact you.
- What is the STAR method?
- A way to answer competency questions: describe the Situation, the Task you had, the Action you took and the Result, including what you learned. It is recommended for UK interviews and Civil Service applications.
- Can an employer ask about my health in an interview?
- Not before offering you the job, under section 60 of the Equality Act 2010, apart from narrow exceptions such as arranging adjustments for the interview or assessment.
- Do I need a visa before applying for UK jobs?
- You can apply first. For the Skilled Worker visa you need a confirmed job offer and a certificate of sponsorship from an approved employer before you apply for the visa itself.
