Common mistakes on a product designer resume

  • Showing screens without the problem

    Fix: A resume that only lists redesigned pages reads like decoration. For each project name the user problem, your role and the result, such as "Redesigned checkout to fix a 38% mobile drop-off and lifted completion 12 points."

  • Claiming team results as your own

    Fix: Product design is collaborative, and interviewers will probe. Say what you owned, such as research, the interaction model or the design system, and use "with" for work shared with engineers and product managers.

  • Leaving out research and testing

    Fix: Hiring teams want designers who validate ideas. Mention the number of interviews, usability sessions or surveys you ran and the decision they changed, not only the tools you used.

  • Weak or missing portfolio link

    Fix: The portfolio carries most of the decision. Put the URL in the header, link directly to two or three relevant case studies, and make sure each one is described the same way as on the resume.
