How to Write a Student Resume: Sections, Tips and Example

A student resume puts education first (school, degree or diploma, expected graduation date, relevant courses, GPA if strong), followed by the evidence you have: projects, part-time or campus jobs, internships, clubs and volunteering, each with result-focused bullets. Keep it to one page, add a skills section matched to the posting, and mention your availability when you apply for part-time or seasonal work.

What to include on a student resume

1. Header: name, city, phone, email, and LinkedIn or portfolio if you have one.
2. Summary (two lines): the role you want and your strongest proof.
3. Education: school, program, "Expected May 2027", GPA if around 3.5 or higher, honors, relevant courses.
4. Projects: class, personal or hackathon projects with what you built and the outcome.
5. Experience: part-time, campus, seasonal or internship roles.
6. Activities and leadership: clubs, teams, student government, volunteering.
7. Skills: software, languages, certifications.

How to make school activities count

Write activities like jobs: role, organization, dates, then bullets with results.

• "Treasurer, Photography Club (2025-present): track a $2,400 annual budget and reimbursements for 40 members."
• "Capstone project: built a demand forecast for a campus café with a team of 3; the café adjusted weekly orders based on it."
• "Resident assistant: support 32 first-year students and run two events a month."

Part-time jobs and availability

Tailor it, even as a student

Internship and part-time postings list what they need: specific software, customer service, schedules. Put the matching course, project or job at the top and use the posting's words where they fit. Frequently asked questions

Should I put my GPA on my student resume?

Include it if it is strong (roughly 3.5 or higher) or if the employer asks for it. Otherwise leave it off; you can list a major GPA if that is higher.

Can I include high school on a college student resume?

In your first year or two, yes, if it shows something relevant (awards, leadership). Later, college experience should replace it.

Should I write "references available upon request"?

No. It is assumed. Prepare two or three references (a professor, a supervisor, a club advisor) separately.
