When is a QR code on a resume worth it?
It is worth it on anything handed over in person: career fairs, networking events, a printed portfolio, an interview where you bring copies. It is worth little on a resume uploaded through an online form, where nobody holds a phone up to a screen. Designers, photographers and engineers with public work gain the most.
| Situation | QR code? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Career fair or networking event | Yes | People scan printed paper on the spot |
| Portfolio-heavy role (design, architecture, photography) | Yes | It leads to the work that matters most |
| Upload through a job portal | Optional | Harmless if small, but the printed link does the job |
| Email application | Rarely | A clickable link in the PDF is easier than a scan |
| Conservative fields (law, public sector) | Usually not | A plain resume matches expectations there |
For online applications, the link printed as text in your header does the work. On printed copies for events and interviews, the QR code is one of the few places where a link on paper gets used.
Can an applicant tracking system read a QR code?
No. An applicant tracking system extracts the text of your file, and a QR code is an image. It does not hurt the parsed text if it sits in a corner and does not push other content into odd places, but the system will not follow it. That is why the address has to be printed as text.
Keep the code out of tables and text boxes, and do not put it where your name or contact details should be. The ATS-friendly resume checklist covers the other layout rules. If you print the resume for an interview, the code is still useful there.
How big should a QR code be on a printed resume?
Large enough to scan from arm's length, which in practice is about 2 cm (0.8 inch) square for a short link. Keep a blank border around it; the QR standard calls this the quiet zone and asks for four modules (the small squares) on each side. Print one test page and scan it with two phones.
- Short link: a long URL makes a denser, harder-to-scan code.
- Dark code on a white background, no colours or logos in the middle.
- Placed top right or next to your contact details.
- The same address printed as text beside it.
- Scanned from a printed copy before you send anything.
Is it safe to link your resume with a QR code?
It depends on what the link opens. A public page with your phone number and address can be indexed by search engines, copied by scrapers and found by anyone who has the paper. Use a page that is not indexed, does not offer a download, hides contact details if you want, and can be switched off later.
If you link a document in cloud storage, set it to view-only and check whether anyone with the link can also see your other files.
Check the page from a phone you are not signed in on. What you see there is what a stranger with your printed resume sees.
How does QR sharing work in Ruubu?
With Resume Pass or Pro, Share creates a public link and a QR code for your resume. The address is random, the page is marked noindex, there is no download button and access is rate-limited. You can hide your email and phone, see an anonymous view count, and revoke the link at any moment.
- The link stays live for 3 months with the Resume Pass and a year with Pro, then expires.
- In the editor you can also add a LinkedIn QR code to the resume itself: it prints top right and needs your LinkedIn URL. It is hidden on photo templates.
- Deleting a resume that is still shared asks you to confirm first.
Details are on the QR resume page; the guide to adding a QR code to your resume covers design choices.
Frequently asked questions
Does a QR code make a resume look unprofessional?
Not when it is small and placed with the contact details. A large code in the middle of the page does, because it takes space from your experience.
What should the QR code link to?
One page that adds something the resume cannot: a portfolio, code samples, a LinkedIn profile or a full online version of the resume.
Should I use a free QR code generator?
Check whether it creates a static code or a redirect through its own servers. Redirect codes can stop working or show ads when a free plan ends.
Can I put a QR code on my cover letter instead?
You can, with the same rules: print the address as text too, and keep the code small.
Will a recruiter actually scan it?
At events, often. On a screen during a quick review, rarely. Treat it as a shortcut for people who already want to see more.
Should the QR code open a PDF or a web page?
A web page. A PDF has to download on the phone first, which is slow on event Wi-Fi, and it is easy to forward to people you did not hand it to.
