How can I practice a mock interview with AI?

Give the AI the job posting and your resume, tell it which interview you are preparing for (a recruiter screen, a behavioral round, a technical round) and ask for one question at a time with follow-ups. Answer out loud, not in writing. Afterwards, ask for feedback on structure and specifics, then repeat the questions you answered worst.

What should you give the AI before a mock interview?

Three things: the posting, your resume, and the type of interview. Without the posting, questions stay generic. Without your resume, the AI cannot ask about your own projects, which is what real interviewers do. Add your level and the interviewer's likely role, such as recruiter or hiring manager, and the questions get much closer to the real thing.

Interview types and what to ask the AI for
InterviewTypical questionsWhat to ask the AI to do
Recruiter screenWhy this role, salary expectations, notice period, a quick tour of your backgroundKeep it short and conversational; check your two-minute introduction
Behavioral round"Tell me about a time you…" questionsPush for situation, action and result; ask what you personally did
Hiring managerYour projects in depth, how you would approach their problemsAsk follow-ups on your resume bullets
Light technical roundConcepts and trade-offs from the posting's toolsAsk one question, wait for your answer, then probe the weak spot

What prompt should you use for a mock interview in a chatbot?

Ask for a role-play with strict rules: one question at a time, follow-ups on vague answers, no feedback until the end. Paste the posting and your resume under the prompt. If the chatbot has a voice mode, use it, because typed answers come out tidier than the ones you will say in the room.

A mock interview prompt

Prompt

Act as the hiring manager for the job posting below. Interview me for 20 minutes. Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer. If an answer is vague, ask a follow-up about what I did and what the result was. Do not give feedback until I type END. Then rate each answer on structure, specifics and length, and rewrite my weakest answer using only facts I gave you.

Then paste

The job posting, then your resume, then "Start".

The last instruction matters: without it, the rewrite tends to add achievements you never mentioned.

How do you run a useful AI practice session?

Treat it like the real interview: a quiet room, a time limit, no notes beyond what you would have on the day. Answer out loud. After the session, read the feedback, pick the two weakest answers and practice those again. One focused repeat is worth more than three new sessions of fresh questions.

  1. Pick the posting and the round

Use the real posting for an interview you have, or one you want.

  2. Prepare three stories

One success, one conflict, one failure, each with a result you can name.

  3. Run the session out loud

Twenty minutes is enough. Do not pause to rewrite answers.

  4. Read the feedback and the transcript

Look for answers without a result, answers over two minutes, and filler words.

  5. Repeat the weakest two

Same questions, new answers. Then stop for the day.

The STAR method guide explains the structure most feedback checks, and the list of common interview questions is a good warm-up.

What should a good AI interview practice tool do?

It should read your resume and the posting, ask one question at a time, follow up when you are vague, and give feedback tied to what you actually said. It should also say what it stores. A tool that records your voice should tell you where the audio goes and how to delete it.

  • Questions built from your resume and the posting, not a fixed list.
  • Follow-up questions when an answer has no result or no "I".
  • Spoken practice, not only typing.
  • Feedback per answer with a reason, plus the transcript.
  • A clear statement of whether audio is recorded and how to delete sessions.
  • A price and session limits you can see before you start.

What does AI interview practice train best?

Structure, specifics, pace and nerves: the parts of an answer you can rehearse until they feel natural. Ruubu's voice interviewer has read your resume and the posting, so the questions are about your own work, and the feedback afterwards covers every answer. Add company research on top: what the team builds, recent news and the people you will meet.

The job interview preparation guide covers what to research about the company before the day.

How do Ruubu's interview tools work?

Ruubu has two. The interview prep kit (Resume Pass and Pro) lists likely questions with talking points from your resume and the job. The voice mock interview is a spoken conversation with an AI interviewer that has read both, in 6 languages. You pick the interviewer, difficulty, level, language and length, and get feedback on every answer afterwards.

  • Interviewers: a recruiter screen, a hiring manager, a behavioral (STAR) round or a light technical interview, at easy, standard or tough difficulty.
  • Feedback covers STAR structure, how specific you were, filler words and length, with a stronger version built only from your resume and what you said.
  • Ruubu does not record or store audio. The transcript and feedback are saved, and you can delete a session at any time.

Voice sessions are included in the Resume Pass and Pro with monthly limits; the free trial includes a short session. See the voice mock interview page and the interview prep kit.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT good for mock interviews?

A general chatbot can ask questions if you paste the posting and your resume each time and set strict rules. Ruubu's voice mock interview is built for it: the interviewer has already read both, you answer out loud, and the stronger version of each answer uses only your resume and what you said.

How many mock interviews should I do before a real one?

Two or three focused sessions, with the weakest answers repeated, usually help more than many short ones.

Can AI help with technical interviews?

For concepts and explaining trade-offs out loud, yes. For live coding, practice in the tool the company uses, with a timer.

Should I memorize the answers AI suggests?

No. Memorize the stories and the results, not the sentences. Recited answers sound recited.

Does practicing out loud really differ from typing answers?

Yes. Spoken answers run longer, wander more and contain filler words that typing hides. That is what you need to practice.

Is my interview practice shared with employers?

Not with Ruubu. Nothing is shared with employers, Ruubu does not record or store audio, and you can delete a session at any time.
