Common mistakes on a business intelligence analyst resume

  • Listing dashboards without saying who used them

    Fix: A dashboard nobody opens is not an achievement. Name the audience, such as 'weekly sales ops review for 40 managers,' and add active users or refresh frequency to prove it was adopted.

  • Hiding the data modeling work

    Fix: BI is more than charts. Mention star schemas, semantic models, DAX measures, dbt transformations or governed datasets you owned, because these separate BI analysts from report builders.

  • Not stating data volume or sources

    Fix: Add row counts, number of source systems or refresh times. 'Combined 7 source systems and 90 million rows into one governed model' shows technical range at a glance.

  • Ignoring data quality and governance

    Fix: Describe the reconciliation checks, definitions or certified datasets you introduced. Trust in numbers is the main complaint stakeholders have about BI, and fixing it is high-value work.

Which metrics should a BI analyst resume show?

Quantify reporting hours automated away, dashboard adoption across departments, query or refresh time reduced, and the revenue or cost decisions your data products influenced. Pair every bullet with a number.

What keywords and tools get a BI resume past ATS?

Mirror the posting: SQL, Power BI or Tableau, DAX, dbt, Snowflake or BigQuery, ETL/ELT and data modeling. List only tools you have actually shipped with, since interviewers will probe them.

Should I pick Power BI or Tableau for my resume?
