UAE CV format: how to write a CV for Dubai and Abu Dhabi

The UAE is a significant recipient of foreign labour, so recruiters read CVs written to many national conventions. A clear, honest, achievement-led CV travels best. This guide covers the structure, which personal details help, how to find jobs, and what expats must prepare before an offer turns into a work permit.

What is the standard CV format in the UAE?

A UAE CV is a concise, reverse-chronological document in English with your contact details, current location and visa status, a short profile, achievements by role, education and skills. The government portal's advice is to start with a strong cover letter and an honest CV and keep it updated. No rule requires a photo, nationality or date of birth on the CV itself.[1]

Layout and structure of a UAE CV

A reverse-chronological layout in one column, with your most relevant achievements at the top of page one, is the easiest for a recruiter to compare with other applicants.

Personal data and fair hiring: what the law says

The UAE Labour Law, Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 and its amendments, governs private-sector employment. According to the government portal, it prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender, race, colour, sex, religion, national or social origin or disability. Your religion, marital status and family details are therefore not part of the assessment, and you do not need to list them.

Some CV templates put a photo, nationality, date of birth and passport number at the top. No official guidance requires any of these on a CV. Include a photo only when a posting asks for one, never put your passport number on a document you upload to job sites, and share passport details once an employer starts the permit process.[2]

How to write a UAE CV in six steps

  1. 01

    Read the posting closely

Note the skills, licences and sector experience it names. The job description keyword matcher shows which of them your CV does not mention yet.

  2. 02

State your location and visa status

One line in the header: in the UAE on a residence visa, on family sponsorship, or abroad and available to relocate.

  3. 03

    Lead with achievements

Three to five results per role, with the market and scale. Replace "responsible for" with what changed.

  4. 04

    Keep personal data lean

Leave out passport number, religion and marital status. Add a photo only if the posting asks.

  5. 05

    Tailor it to each posting

Reorder achievements around the employer's priorities. You can optimise your resume for one job straight from the posting link.

  6. 06

Check it and write the cover letter

Run the free resume checker, then write a short cover letter for the same role.

Cover letters and the application package

The UAE government portal's first tip for job seekers is to start with an impressive cover letter and an honest CV, and to keep the CV updated. Keep the letter to one page: the role, two or three achievements that match it, and your notice period or availability. The cover letter generator drafts one from the posting in the same design as your CV, and interview prep builds practice questions for the same role.

The same guidance warns against paying anyone to get a job. Check that job offers come from an email address on the organisation's own domain, and treat any request for money for a visa or medical test as a sign the offer is not genuine. Charging recruitment fees to prospective employees is illegal in the UAE.[1][3]

Where to find jobs in the UAE

The u.ae job search page lists the official government job portals, including the federal portal, Abu Dhabi's, Dubai Careers and those of Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. For the private sector it names Bayt, NaukriGulf, FoundItGulf, Gulf News Careers and Laimoon, as well as LinkedIn, company careers pages, job fairs and licensed recruitment agencies. Registering on job portals is free, and you do not owe commission to anyone for a job found through one.

UAE nationals can look for private-sector roles through the Nafis programme, which supports Emiratisation targets that require many private companies to employ Emirati staff.[1][8]

Applying from abroad: permits, attestation and licensing

It is illegal to work in the UAE without a valid work permit issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). The employer sends you a job offer, which must be in Arabic and English, and once you have signed it, the employer applies for the work permit; that approval lets you enter the UAE, where the offer is registered as your employment contract. Residence visa procedures follow after you arrive. Check current rules on u.ae rather than figures quoted elsewhere.

Certain jobs require attested academic certificates: authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the issuing country, then by the UAE embassy or consulate there. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research also issues a recognition report for degrees from accredited foreign institutions, used for employment and government services. Some regulated professions, such as physicians and lab technicians, require local licensing exams, and some, such as lawyers who appear in court, are reserved for UAE nationals.[4][5][6][7]

Common mistakes on UAE CVs

  • Leaving out your current location and visa status, so the recruiter cannot tell how quickly you could start.
  • Putting a passport number, religion or marital status on a CV uploaded to job sites.
  • Copying a long home-country format instead of a concise, achievement-led CV.
  • Listing a degree under a different name from the certificate you will attest.
  • Sending one generic CV to every posting without a tailored cover letter.
  • Paying an agency or "employer" to process a visa or medical test.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a photo on a CV for Dubai?
No official rule requires one, and the UAE Labour Law prohibits discrimination on grounds such as gender, race, colour and national origin, all of which a photo can reveal. Add a professional portrait only when a posting explicitly asks for one, and keep it small so it does not take space from your achievements.
Should I include my nationality and visa status?
Visa status, yes: say whether you are in the UAE on a residence visa, on family sponsorship or abroad. The work permit route differs for each, so it helps the employer plan. Nationality is not required on the CV; passport details are needed only once the employer starts the permit process.
Do I need to attest my degree before applying?
Not to apply, but certain jobs require attested academic certificates before residence and employment procedures can be completed, and attestation runs through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the issuing country and the UAE embassy there. If your role may need it, start early and list the degree exactly as it appears on the certificate.
Is Arabic required for jobs in the UAE?
Only when the posting asks for it. The UAE government portal does note that knowledge of Arabic, at least speaking, is an advantage. List your Arabic level honestly on the CV, even if it is basic or only conversational, and note that job offers and contracts are issued in Arabic and English.
Can I look for work in the UAE on a visit visa?
You can search for work on a jobseeker visit visa, which does not require a sponsor in the country, but working on a visit or tourist visa is prohibited. You need a work permit from MoHRE, which your employer applies for after you sign the job offer. Check the eligibility criteria on u.ae before you travel.
