Swedish CV format: how to write a CV for Sweden

A Swedish application is usually a CV plus a personligt brev, a short personal letter. Both are expected to be tailored to the job. This guide covers what Sweden's public employment service recommends, what the Discrimination Act means for your personal details, and how to apply from abroad.

What is the standard CV format in Sweden?

A Swedish CV is one to two pages long. It covers contact details, a short summary, work experience and education in reverse chronological order with dates, then languages, IT skills and other relevant attributes. A photo is optional. Send it as a PDF with a personal letter of no more than one A4 page, unless the employer uses an application form instead.[1][2][3]

Layout and structure of a Swedish CV

Arbetsförmedlingen, the Swedish Public Employment Service, says one to two pages is sufficient and that you do not need to list everything you have done: focus on experience that is relevant to the job and adapt the CV to each application. Simple structure and clear headings help the employer get an overview quickly. Common headings are contact details, a summary, experience and education, plus your own headings for languages, computer skills or associations.

EURES adds that education and work experience should carry dates and appear in reverse chronological order, and that other attributes of interest, such as positions of responsibility, a driving licence and computer skills, belong on the CV too, alongside language skills and leisure interests.

With little work experience, show examples of collaboration and efficient work from studies or other activities. To build the summary around one advert, use the job-specific resume optimizer.[1][2]

Photo and personal data: the Discrimination Act

Sweden's Discrimination Act (2008:567) names seven grounds of discrimination: sex, transgender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion or other belief, disability, sexual orientation and age. Ethnicity covers national or ethnic origin and skin colour. The Act says an employer may not discriminate against a person who is enquiring about or applying for work, and the Equality Ombudsman (DO) gives not being invited to an interview as an example of a disadvantage.

The Act also gives applicants a useful right: if you were not selected for an interview or the job, you can ask the employer for written information about the education, experience and other qualifications of the person who was.

None of this stops you sharing details voluntarily. EURES lists date of birth and possibly nationality among the usual personal details, and Arbetsförmedlingen's templates come with or without a photo. If you include a photograph, the agency says to choose one that looks professional.[1][2][6][7]

The personal letter and the rest of the application

EURES describes the usual written application as a personal letter with a CV attached, while noting that many companies use application forms on their websites and some have stopped asking for a letter. Read the advert to see how to apply. Arbetsförmedlingen says a good personal letter is at most one A4 page and complements the CV rather than repeating it: start with the job and why you fit, tailor it to what the employer is looking for, give examples of your personal qualities instead of clichés, and leave dates and details to the CV. The cover letter builder keeps the letter in the same design as your CV.

For references, choose two or three people who know you through work, never friends or relatives, and ask them first. Enclose certificates or testimonials only if the advert asks for them, and take copies to the interview. Send the CV and letter as PDFs, named for example "CV Forename Surname", before the last application date.[1][2][3][4]

Where to find jobs in Sweden

Arbetsförmedlingen runs Platsbanken, which it describes as Sweden's largest and most visited employment website. You do not need to register as a job seeker to search it, and its vacancies are also copied to the EURES portal. EURES points out that adverts are usually in Swedish, that many jobs are never advertised externally and that contacting an employer on your own initiative is common and usually seen positively. Recruitment agencies, company websites, LinkedIn and private boards such as Monster also list roles.[1][5]

How to write a Swedish CV in six steps

Use these steps for a first Swedish CV or to adapt a resume written for another country.

  1. 01

Read the advert and how to apply

Check the language, the requirements and whether the employer wants a letter, a form or both. The JD keyword matcher shows which terms your CV lacks.

  2. 02

    Open with a short summary

A few lines on who you are and what you offer this employer.

  3. 03

List experience and education with dates

Most recent first, with a brief description of what you did and achieved.

  4. 04

Add languages, IT skills and other attributes

Driving licence, positions of responsibility and associations count. Decide whether to add a photo.

  5. 05

    Write a one-page personal letter

Complement the CV: explain why you want this job and show your qualities with examples.

  6. 06

    Check and send as PDF

Run the free resume checker, proofread the spelling and send before the last application date.

Applying from abroad: language, qualifications and permits

EURES says that in most cases you need to read and understand Swedish in the workplace, with exceptions in sectors such as IT, engineering, tourism and seasonal work, and that the language of the advert shows which working language the employer uses or accepts. Apply in that language; resume translation converts the CV while keeping the layout.

The Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) compares foreign qualifications with Swedish ones, through an online Qualifications Assessment Tool or a recognition statement. You can apply for jobs without one; UHR describes the evaluation as an aid for employers and a complement to your CV and education documents. Regulated professions have their own authorities.

EU/EEA citizens who work in Sweden have a right of residence without a residence permit, and Nordic citizens are free to settle. In most cases, citizens of other countries need a work permit, with a few exemptions. Check the Swedish Migration Agency's work pages for the current rules.[1][8][9][10]

Common mistakes on Swedish CVs

  • Listing everything you have ever done instead of what is relevant to this job.
  • Repeating the CV in the personal letter instead of adding examples.
  • Using clichés such as "I work well under pressure" without showing it.
  • Naming friends or relatives as references, or not asking referees first.
  • Submitting text that is entirely AI-generated; the agency warns it risks rejection.
  • Sending files in formats the employer's system cannot read, or missing the last application date.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a photo on a Swedish CV?
No. Arbetsförmedlingen offers CV templates both with and without a photo, and says only that a photo, if you include one, should look professional. The Discrimination Act protects grounds such as sex, ethnicity and age, which a photo can reveal, so leaving it out is a perfectly normal choice in Sweden.
How long should a CV be in Sweden?
One to two pages, according to both Arbetsförmedlingen and EURES. You do not need to list everything you have done: keep the experience that is relevant to the job you are applying for. A graduate usually fits on one page; with a longer career, shorten older roles to a line each.
Is a personal letter still required in Sweden?
Often, but not always. EURES says a personal letter with a CV is required in most cases, while many companies now use application forms and some have stopped asking for a letter. When you write one, keep it to one A4 page and make it complement the CV with examples rather than repeat it.
Can I apply in English in Sweden?
Yes, when the advert is in English or the role uses English. EURES notes that most workplaces require Swedish, with exceptions in sectors such as IT, engineering, tourism and seasonal work, and that the language of the advert indicates the working language. Adverts on Platsbanken are usually written in Swedish.
Should I list references on my CV?
It is common to write "references can be provided on request" instead, Arbetsförmedlingen says, so your referees are not called too often. Prepare two or three people who know you through work, ask their permission first, tell them which job you applied for and bring their details to the interview.
