Video Editor resume example

Editors get hired off the reel and the credits behind it. Your resume should say what you cut (social, broadcast, documentary or branded), which systems you work in, how fast you turn versions around and what deliverables you hand off. Put the reel link where nobody can miss it.

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

Video Editor resume objective examples

An objective fits when you have no direct experience in the role yet. Name the role, the proof you already have and what you will bring to the team.

  • Film school graduate

Film and television graduate who edited a 22-minute thesis documentary in DaVinci Resolve and assistant-edited two student features in Avid. Seeking an assistant editor role on a documentary or unscripted team to learn shared storage workflows and turnovers.

  • Creator to editor

Self-taught editor who has cut 150 videos for a YouTube channel with weekly uploads, handling story, captions and thumbnails. Applying for a social video editor role to bring short-form pacing and audience retention habits to a brand team.

Common mistakes on a video editor resume

  • A reel that does not match the job

Fix: A documentary producer and a social media lead want different evidence. Cut a version of your reel for each genre and open on your best ten seconds. Make the resume headline and top bullets name the genre the reel shows, so both say the same thing.

  • Listing software with no workflow

Fix: "Premiere, Avid, Resolve" says nothing about what you can run alone. Describe your workflow: ingest and proxies, bin organization, multicam syncing, conform and online, plus review tools such as Frame.io. Post supervisors want editors who leave a project clean for the next person.

  • Hiding speed and versioning

Fix: Branded and social teams need many cuts quickly. Show how many versions or aspect ratios you delivered per campaign, your usual time from footage to first cut, and how you handled rounds of notes. A line about turning client notes overnight tells a producer more than "works well under pressure".

  • Leaving out finishing and deliverables

Fix: Many editors also handle color, sound and graphics passes before handoff. Say what you finish yourself, which specs you meet (broadcast loudness, closed captions, platform files) and what you pass to a colorist or mixer. That tells an employer whether to budget for finishing on top of your rate.

What should a video editor resume include?

A video editor resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Story Structure, Rough Cut and Fine Cut. Start bullets with verbs like Cut, Assembled and Conformed, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Avid Certified User: Media Composer, list it in its own section.

Video Editor resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Cut 22 branded videos a quarter for consumer clients, taking each from raw footage to first cut in 48 hours or less.
  • Delivered 18 versions per campaign across 16:9, 9:16 and 1:1 in three lengths, all tracked in one naming system the producers could follow.
  • Built story for a 6-episode documentary series from 400 hours of footage, working with the producer from string-outs to picture lock.
  • Edited 3 seasons of an unscripted cable series in Avid on shared storage, delivering every episode to network spec ahead of air.
  • Color-corrected and graded 60 short pieces a year in DaVinci Resolve, matching footage from 4 camera types to the brand's look.
  • Mixed dialogue, music and effects for 120 social videos to platform loudness targets, so short-form work no longer needed an outside mix.
  • Turned around client notes overnight on 90% of review rounds in Frame.io, keeping a 30-video campaign on its launch date.
  • Set up proxy and media management workflows for a team of 5 editors, cutting project handoff time from a full day to two hours.

How to stand out as a video editor applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the genre and system in each posting

Read whether the job is social, broadcast, documentary or branded, and which system the team runs. Put that genre in your headline, move the closest credits up and lead your skills with the named software. Swap in the reel for that genre. A documentary team will skip a list of 6-second ads. Tailor your editor resume to this job

  • Open the letter with a cut you are proud of

Start with one project and the editing problem you solved, such as finding a story in a pile of interviews or recutting a spot for vertical in a day. Connect it to the employer's own content, which you can usually watch online. Then add your systems, whether you want freelance or staff work, and the reel link again. Draft a video editor cover letter

  • Expect an edit test

Many teams send footage and a brief, then give you a few hours or a day to cut a short piece. Practice with unfamiliar footage under a timer and export to spec. Interviewers also ask how you organize a project, how you handle notes you disagree with and what you do when media goes missing. Prepare for your video editor interview

  • Keep credits accurate and checkable

Producers check credits, so give your actual role on each project: editor, additional editor or assistant editor. If you recut or finished someone else's edit, say so. Use the same titles and roles on your LinkedIn profile and in the reel, so anyone who checks finds one consistent record. Line up your LinkedIn credits

Video Editor resume questions

Where should the reel go on a video editor resume?

In the header, next to your email, as a short link that plays straight away. Keep the main reel to a minute or two with the strongest work first, plus a second link to full pieces by genre. If some work is under NDA, describe the project type in a bullet instead of showing it.

Should I list credits the way a film CV does?

For broadcast, documentary and scripted work, yes: a short credits section with the title, your role (editor, additional editor or assistant editor), the outlet type and the year. For agency and branded work, project bullets with outcomes read better. Keep the resume to one or two pages and offer a full credit list on request.

Do I need to join the Editors Guild?

Only for certain union jobs. In film and scripted television, many productions in Los Angeles and New York hire editors through the Motion Picture Editors Guild (IATSE Local 700), and joining depends on qualifying work. Corporate, agency and social work is usually non-union. If you are a member, list it under affiliations.

Which editing software should I list first?

The one the posting names. Long-form broadcast teams often run Avid Media Composer on shared storage, agencies and in-house teams lean toward Premiere Pro, and a growing number of post houses work in DaVinci Resolve. Give your level in each, and say whether you also handle media management and conforms.
