Teacher Assistant resume example

Teacher assistant and paraprofessional hiring turns on two things: whether you meet the qualification rules for the position and how well you support the lead teacher. Show the first with your ParaPro score, college credits or associate degree, plus any state clearance card. Show the second with the grades you worked in, the small groups you ran under the teacher's plan and the students you supported one-on-one.

Common mistakes on a teacher assistant resume

  • Hiding the qualification the job requires

Fix: If the posting mentions ParaPro, college credits or a state aide certificate, the screener looks for that before anything else. Put it in your certifications section or near the top of education with the year. Add a state fingerprint clearance card or background check if your state requires one for school staff.

  • Writing "helped the teacher" for every bullet

Fix: Helping is the job, so say what kind. Separate instruction (small groups, reading practice, math fact drills), behavior support (token systems, data sheets, breaks), supervision (recess, lunch, buses) and preparation (copies, centers, materials). Each type gets its own bullet with a number, such as students or minutes per day.

  • Leaving out the students you supported one-on-one

Fix: One-on-one aides carry real responsibility. Without naming anyone, say the grade, the kind of support (behavior plan, communication device, mobility, medical routine) and the result, such as more time in the general education room or fewer incidents. Directors hiring for these roles need to see you have done it before.

  • Forgetting your second language

Fix: Bilingual assistants are often the bridge between a school and its families. If you translate at conferences, call home or help newcomer students in their first language, list the language with an honest level and add a bullet with numbers, such as families contacted or conferences interpreted.

What should a teacher assistant resume include?

A teacher assistant resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Small-group instruction, Guided practice and Phonics drills. Start bullets with verbs like Assisted, Reinforced and Prepared, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as ParaPro Assessment (ETS), list it in its own section.

How to stand out as a teacher assistant applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the posting's support type

Teacher assistant postings range from general classroom aide to one-on-one special education support to bilingual instructional assistant. Put the matching type in your headline, move the most similar job first and use the posting's terms, such as "instructional assistant" or "paraeducator," if those are what the district calls the role. Add your qualification line near the top. Tailor your resume to a teacher assistant posting

  • Keep the cover letter short and practical

A short letter works best for assistant roles. Say which grade or setting you want, how you meet the qualification (ParaPro, credits or degree), one example of a student group you supported with a number, and your availability. If you speak another language used by families at the school, say so in the first paragraph. Draft a teacher assistant cover letter

  • Prepare for questions about following the plan

Interviewers often ask how you would handle a student who refuses work, a disagreement with the lead teacher, a child who gets hurt at recess or a parent who asks you about another student. Prepare short answers that show you follow the teacher's plan, report what you see and keep information about students private. Practice teacher assistant interview questions

  • Plan the move from assistant to teacher

If you are working toward your own classroom, study how a lead teacher resume reads: grade, setting, results and licensure. Start collecting the numbers you will need now, like groups led, lessons covered and student progress, so the move is easier later. The general teacher example shows how those results are written. Teacher Assistant resume questions

What qualifications does a teacher assistant need?

Rules depend on the school and funding. In Title I programs, federal rules generally require paraprofessionals with instructional duties to have a high school diploma plus two years of college, an associate degree or higher, or a passing score on a formal state or local assessment such as the ParaPro Assessment from ETS. States and districts can add their own requirements, so check the posting.

Where do I put the ParaPro Assessment on my resume?

List it in your certifications section with the year you passed. Some applicants also add the score, which is fine if your state publishes a passing score and you cleared it. If you qualified through college credits instead, put the credit count or associate degree in education. Either way, make the qualification easy to find, since it is often the first screen.

How do I describe work that the lead teacher planned?

Be honest about who planned and who delivered. Write "Led daily phonics groups of 5 students using the teacher's lesson plans" rather than claiming you designed the curriculum. Then show your part: how many students, how often, what data you collected and what changed. Principals want an assistant who follows the plan well and reports back clearly.

Should I include personal care or health duties?

Yes, if the job you are applying for may include them. Special education and early childhood positions often involve toileting, feeding support, lifting or transfers, and helping with medical routines under a nurse's direction. Describe the duty plainly and mention the training you received. It tells the hiring team you are ready for the full role and treat it with dignity.

I want to become a teacher. How should my assistant resume show that?

Show growth in responsibility: groups you led, lessons you taught when the teacher was out, data you helped analyze, and any licensure coursework. Some districts and states run grow-your-own programs or college partnerships for paraprofessionals who want to teach, so mention your enrollment and expected completion date. Ask your lead teacher for a reference that speaks to your instruction.
