Python Developer resume example

Python jobs split into web backends, data tooling, automation and machine learning support, and each team screens for its own corner. Make yours obvious in the first lines: Django or FastAPI, pandas or Airflow, Celery workers or CLI tools. Then prove code quality with type hints, pytest coverage, packaging and the response times or job run times your code changed.

Summary

Python developer with five years building Django and FastAPI services for clinic scheduling and survey analytics. Added mypy typing to a 70,000-line codebase, moved heavy reports onto Celery workers and brought the scheduling API's median response down to 180 ms. Writes pytest first, deploys with Docker on AWS and likes replacing manual chores with small tested tools.

Python Developer resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Python developer with a bootcamp certificate and a year of freelance work building Django sites and FastAPI endpoints for small businesses. Writes typed code with pytest suites, deploys with Docker on a small VPS and keeps every project in Git with CI. Holds the PCAP credential and wants to join a backend team that reviews code carefully.

  • Mid level

Python developer with five years on Django and FastAPI services for healthcare scheduling and analytics. Typed a 70,000-line codebase with mypy, moved slow reports onto Celery workers and cut median API response time from 620 ms to 180 ms. Comfortable with PostgreSQL tuning, Redis, Docker and AWS, and enjoys turning manual jobs into tested tools.

  • Senior

Senior Python engineer with ten years building web backends and data services in Django, FastAPI and Airflow. Led a Python 2 to 3 migration of a 250,000-line platform, set typing and testing standards for three teams, and designed the async ingestion service that handles 40 million events a day. Mentors developers and writes the design documents.

Common mistakes on a python developer resume

  • Listing every library you have imported

Fix: NumPy, requests, BeautifulSoup, Flask, Django, pandas, TensorFlow and Selenium in one line reads like a pip freeze. Group skills by the work they support, keep the ones the posting asks for, and show depth in two or three. A reviewer would rather see Django ORM tuning than twenty library names.

  • No sign of async or concurrency judgment

Fix: Python's GIL, asyncio and worker queues come up in most backend interviews. If you moved blocking calls to async FastAPI routes, split CPU work into Celery or multiprocessing, or fixed a deadlock in a worker pool, write it down with the throughput or latency before and after.

  • Leaving out how the code ships

Fix: Say how your code reaches users: Docker images, Gunicorn or Uvicorn behind a load balancer, AWS Lambda, or packages published to an internal index. Mention the dependency tools you use, such as Poetry, pip-tools or uv. Teams hiring a Python developer have often been hurt by code that only ran on one laptop.

  • Quoting Python 2 or old Django versions without context

Fix: If your experience includes Python 2.7 or Django 1.x, frame it as migration work: "moved 120,000 lines from Python 2.7 to 3.8." Otherwise list the current versions you use. Old versions with no story make a reviewer wonder whether your habits kept up.

What should a python developer resume include?

A python developer resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Django, Django REST Framework and FastAPI. Start bullets with verbs like Wrote, Automated and Packaged, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as PCEP – Certified Entry-Level Python Programmer (Python Institute), list it in its own section.

Python Developer resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Rewrote a Flask reporting API in FastAPI with async database calls, cutting median response time from 700 ms to 160 ms.
  • Added type hints across 65,000 lines and enforced mypy in CI, catching 31 latent bugs before they reached production.
  • Automated a weekly vendor reconciliation with a tested Click CLI, saving 12 analyst hours a week and removing spreadsheet errors.
  • Moved PDF generation and email sends from request handlers to Celery workers, dropping p95 page load time by 2.4 seconds.
  • Packaged 7 shared utilities into an internal library with Poetry and semantic versioning, adopted by 5 product teams.
  • Scheduled 22 Airflow DAGs for nightly data loads with retries and alerts, raising on-time completion from 81% to 99%.
  • Tuned Django ORM queries with select_related and indexes on the patient search page, reducing query count per request from 140 to 9.
  • Raised pytest coverage on the billing service from 35% to 84% and set a coverage gate that blocks merges below 80%.
  • Migrated 120,000 lines from Python 2.7 to 3.11 over two quarters with no customer-facing incidents.
  • Built a pandas validation step that flags malformed rows before import, cutting failed nightly loads from 6 a month to 1.

How to stand out as a python developer applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Make the Python niche match the posting

A Django product team, a data platform team and an automation group all post "Python Developer." Read which frameworks and tools the posting names, then reorder your skills and bullets so that corner of your experience comes first. Rename nothing you have not done; move the matching work up instead. Tailor your Python resume

  • Point the cover letter at their codebase

If the company has public repositories, an engineering blog or a known stack, mention one thing you noticed and how your work relates, such as moving sync views to async or typing an older Django app. Keep it to three short paragraphs and link one repository that shows code you are proud of. Write a Python developer cover letter

  • Practice live coding in plain Python

Many Python interviews include a live exercise with dictionaries, generators, sorting with keys and error handling, followed by questions on the GIL, async and decorators. Practice writing tests as you go. Be ready to explain a slow endpoint you fixed, how you profiled it and what the numbers were. Prepare for Python interviews

  • Pull the exact libraries from local postings

Run three or four postings you want through a skills extractor and note which libraries repeat: Pydantic, SQLAlchemy, Airflow, Celery, pandas. Those names belong in your skills line and, more importantly, in a bullet that shows what you built with them. Skip libraries you only met in a tutorial. Extract skills from Python postings

Python Developer resume questions

Should I call myself a Python developer or a backend developer?

Use the title the posting uses. If the role is "Python Developer," put that in your headline even if your last title was "Software Engineer," as long as Python was your main language there. Then let the framework line say which kind of Python work you do: Django web apps, FastAPI services, data pipelines or internal automation.

How do I show code quality in Python, a language with few guardrails?

Teams worry about untyped, untested scripts that grew into production systems. Show the guardrails you add: type hints checked by mypy or Pyright, pytest suites with coverage numbers, Ruff or Black in pre-commit, and packaging with Poetry or uv. A bullet about adding types to a 60,000-line codebase reads as maturity, not busywork.

Do Python certifications matter?

Most Python hiring is decided by code you can show, but the Python Institute exams (PCEP, PCAP and PCPP1) give structure if you are new to the language or changing careers. List the one you hold with the year. For experienced developers, a public repository, a published package on PyPI or a technical write-up usually says more.

Should I include scripts and automation work?

Yes, if you describe them as software. "Wrote scripts" sounds small. "Built a CLI with Click and pytest that replaced a 3-hour manual reconciliation, used by 14 analysts" sounds like a product. Give users, frequency and time saved, and say how it was deployed and maintained, whether as a cron job, an Airflow DAG or an internal package.

I come from data science. How do I pivot to a Python developer role?

Lead with the engineering in your work: APIs you wrapped around models, tests you wrote, packages you maintained, CI pipelines you set up. Move notebooks and model accuracy lower. Add one project that looks like product code, such as a FastAPI service with a database, migrations and tests, and link it from your resume.
