New Grad Nurse resume example

Residency recruiters cannot judge you on RN years, so they read your clinical record instead: where you did your capstone or preceptorship, how many hours, which units you rotated through, and any paid work as a CNA, PCT or EMT. State your NCLEX-RN status in plain words, keep it to one page, and show a few concrete moments of judgment from clinicals.

New Grad Nurse resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

New graduate RN with a BSN and a 144-hour capstone on a 30-bed cardiac step-down unit, building up to a full four-patient assignment by the tenth week. Worked 18 months as a patient care technician during school, drawing labs and running EKGs. Passed the NCLEX-RN in August 2026, BLS and ACLS certified, and applying to adult acute care residency programs.

  • Mid level

Newly licensed registered nurse who worked five years as an LPN in skilled nursing before finishing an LPN-to-BSN program. Brings steady med pass habits, wound care skill and experience directing nursing assistants, plus a 160-hour preceptorship in a medical ICU. Applying to new graduate critical care residencies that welcome nurses with earlier licensed experience.

  • Senior

Second-career nurse who spent ten years as a paramedic before earning an accelerated BSN. Passed the NCLEX-RN on the first attempt and finished a 180-hour emergency department capstone at a Level I trauma center. Brings field triage, IV access and airway experience, plus calm communication with frightened families, to a new graduate ED fellowship.

Common mistakes on a new grad nurse resume

  • Copying the whole skills checklist from your program

Fix: A list of thirty skills you were signed off on in a lab reads like everyone else's. Keep the ones you did on real patients and say how often, such as "gave 300 medications under supervision" or "placed 6 Foley catheters." Fewer skills with numbers look more credible than a long list.

  • Writing an objective about you instead of the residency

Fix: "Seeking a position where I can grow" says nothing to a recruiter. Name the program or unit type, link it to your capstone or rotation, and say what you bring on day one: "New graduate applying to the cardiac residency track, with a 144-hour capstone on cardiac step-down and two years as a PCT."

  • Dropping work experience outside healthcare

Fix: Barista, retail or server jobs still show that you can work long shifts, handle upset customers and show up on time. Keep one line for each such job with dates. If space is tight, list them under "Other Work Experience" with no bullets rather than deleting them.

  • Leaving out capstone hours and the patient load you reached

Fix: Your capstone is the closest thing to an RN job you have done. Give the unit, hours, how many patients you managed by the end and any project you led there. "Built to a full 4-patient assignment by week ten" tells a nurse manager you are ready for a residency orientation.

What should a new grad nurse resume include?

A new grad nurse resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Medical-Surgical, Cardiac Step-Down and Pediatrics. Start bullets with verbs like Completed, Documented and Escalated, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as RN License (after passing the NCLEX-RN), list it in its own section.

New Grad Nurse resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Completed a 144-hour capstone on a 30-bed cardiac step-down unit, building from 1 to 4 patients under a preceptor by week ten.
  • Gave 300 medications under supervision during clinicals with full barcode scanning compliance and no medication errors.
  • Noticed a post-op patient's early warning score climb to 5 during a med-surg rotation and gave an SBAR report to the preceptor, who called a rapid response.
  • Taught insulin pen technique to 12 newly diagnosed diabetic patients during a community health rotation, checking understanding with teach-back.
  • Worked 1,400 hours as a patient care technician during school, drawing labs, running EKGs and recording vitals for 12 patients a shift.
  • Led a 4-student capstone project on hourly rounding that the unit added to its night shift fall-prevention huddles.
  • Helped with 20 vaginal deliveries during a labor and delivery rotation, completing newborn assessments and recording Apgar scores with the nurse.
  • Charted assessments for 3 to 4 patients a shift in Epic under student access, with no missing elements on instructor review in the final 6 weeks.
  • Volunteered 60 hours at a free clinic, taking blood pressures and screening walk-in patients for follow-up appointments.
  • Passed the NCLEX-RN on the first attempt after a 10-week study plan, while working 24 hours a week as a PCT.

How to stand out as a new grad nurse applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Write to the residency's specialty track

Residency programs frequently hire into a track, such as med-surg, critical care or perioperative. Read the track description and put your closest rotation or capstone at the top of the clinical section. Echo the program's words, like transition to practice or cohort start date, and confirm you can start when the cohort begins. Tailor your new grad resume to the residency

  • Explain why this unit, in your own words

Residency applications often ask for a cover letter or short essay. Tell a short story from clinicals that drew you to the unit, with no patient details, then link it to something specific about the program. Close with your NCLEX status and the date you can start. One page is plenty. Draft a new grad nurse cover letter

  • Practice the new grad interview questions

Expect behavioral questions about a mistake you made in clinicals, a disagreement with a classmate or nurse and how you handle stress. Panels may add a prioritization question with four patients. Use situation, action and result, keep each answer under two minutes, and ask about orientation length and preceptor matching. Prepare for a new grad RN interview

  • Draft a summary that leads with clinical hours

Without RN years, your summary carries more weight. Start with your degree and NCLEX status, then your capstone unit and hours, then one strength such as PCT work or a second language. A summary generator gives you drafts to edit; keep only the facts the rest of the page can back up. Write a new grad nurse summary

New Grad Nurse resume questions

I have not sat for the NCLEX-RN yet. What do I put?

Write where you are in the process, in one line under education or credentials: "Authorization to Test received, NCLEX-RN booked for July 2026." Some states issue a temporary or graduate nurse permit that lets you work under supervision before you pass; the rules and names vary by state, so list one only if you actually hold it. Update the line the day your license posts.

How many clinical rotations should I list?

Describe your capstone or preceptorship in detail, then list three or four other rotations that relate to the job, each with unit type and hours. A residency in critical care cares more about your ICU and step-down time than your community health hours. Skip rotations that add nothing for this employer, or fold them into a single line.

Should my PCT or CNA job go above my clinicals?

Put the section that best matches the job first. For most new graduate RN roles that is clinical experience, because it shows nursing-level work. Paid patient care work comes next and proves you can hold a shift, follow policy and work with a team. If you worked as a tech on the same unit you are applying to, consider leading with it.

Is my GPA or honor society worth including?

Include GPA when the application asks for it or when it is strong, and add honors such as Dean's List or membership in Sigma, the nursing honor society. Leave GPA off if it is weak and the application does not require it. Either way, keep it to one line so your clinical work stays the focus.

I graduated with an ADN. Will that hold me back?

Hiring practices vary. Some hospitals hire associate degree graduates into residencies, while others ask for a BSN or a plan to complete one within a set period. If you are enrolled in an RN-to-BSN program, list the school and expected completion date. Widen your search to community hospitals, long-term acute care and skilled nursing as well.
