Janitor resume example

Facility supervisors and cleaning contractors want to know what kind of building you can keep up and how much of it. Say whether you cleaned schools, offices, clinics or plants, the square footage or floors covered on a shift, and the machines you run, from auto scrubbers to carpet extractors. Add chemical safety training and whether you lock up and set alarms.

Common mistakes on a janitor resume

  • Calling it "general cleaning"

Fix: Name the tasks a supervisor will need from you on day one: dust mopping and wet mopping hard floors, vacuuming, restroom disinfection and restocking, trash and recycling removal, glass and high-touch surfaces, event setup. A list of real tasks reads as experience; "general cleaning" reads as filler.

  • Not naming the floor machines

Fix: Floor care is the skill that separates janitors. Say which machines you can run on your own: walk-behind or ride-on auto scrubbers, high-speed burnishers, swing machines for stripping, carpet extractors. If you have stripped and refinished VCT floors or done summer deep cleans in a school, give it a bullet with the square footage.

  • Giving no coverage or quality numbers

Fix: Cleaning work can be measured. Add square feet or rooms per shift, number of buildings, how often you finished on time, and any client audit or inspection score. One number per job is enough, such as "kept a 96% average on monthly client inspections."

  • Leaving out chemical and building safety

Fix: Mixing the wrong chemicals or leaving a door unlocked can cause real harm. Show that you read safety data sheets, use dilution systems and the right PPE, put out wet floor signs, report hazards and follow lock-up and alarm procedures. A single clear bullet covers it.

What should a janitor resume include?

A janitor resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Strip & Refinish, VCT Floors and Burnishing. Start bullets with verbs like Stripped, Refinished and Sanitized, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Certified Custodial Technician (CCT), ISSA Cleaning Management Institute, list it in its own section.

How to stand out as a janitor applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the building type in the posting

A school wants floor projects, event setups and a background check. A hospital or clinic wants disinfection and bloodborne pathogens training. An office or plant wants square footage, speed and lock-up. Put your experience with that building type first, use words from the posting such as "custodian" or "porter," and add the shift you can work. Tailor your resume to a janitor posting

  • Send a short note with your application

A few sentences are enough. Say which shift you want, the kind of building you cleaned last, the floor machines you can run and that you can start soon. If you have a reference from a supervisor or a client, mention it. A short, clear note makes it easy for a facility manager to call you. Write a short janitor cover letter

  • Get ready for practical questions

Supervisors ask how you would clean a restroom from start to finish, what you do with a chemical you do not recognize, how you handle a blood or vomit spill, and what you do if you find a door unlocked at night. Answer step by step, in the order you would actually work. Practice janitor interview questions

  • Check that the page is easy to read

Many janitor resumes are read quickly on a phone by a busy supervisor. Keep it to one page with plain headings, your phone number at the top, the shift you want and one bullet with your square footage. A quick resume check can show you if anything is missing or hard to read. Check your janitor resume

Janitor resume questions

Janitor, custodian or housekeeper: which title should I use?

Use the one in the posting, and the one your employer actually gave you. Janitor and custodian usually mean commercial or school buildings: floors, restrooms, trash, setups and small repairs. Housekeeper usually means hotel rooms or private homes. If your title was "custodian" and the posting says "janitor," keep your real title and put the posting's word in your summary.

Do I need a certification to get hired?

Usually not. Most employers train you on their chemicals and equipment. A credential such as ISSA's Certified Custodial Technician can help you stand out or move to a lead role. Separately, OSHA requires employers to give bloodborne pathogens training to workers who could be exposed to blood on the job, at assignment and every year after. If you have had it, list it.

How do I describe my area if I clean at night with no one watching?

Use the numbers your route already has. Give the square footage or number of floors, classrooms, offices or restrooms on your route, how many buildings you covered, and the time you finished. Add any inspection or audit scores from the supervisor or client. "Cleaned 32,000 square feet of offices nightly, 4 floors, 12 restrooms" paints the job clearly.

Should I mention background checks or building keys?

If it is true, yes. Schools, banks, clinics and government buildings often require a background check or fingerprinting, and the rules vary by state and employer. A line such as "cleared for school campus work" or "trusted with master keys and alarm codes for 3 buildings" shows reliability without sharing anything private.

How do I list work for a cleaning contractor that sent me to many buildings?

List the contractor as your employer, then use bullets for the kinds of sites you cleaned: offices, a medical clinic, a warehouse break area, a church. Mention the largest or most demanding site by type, not by the client's name, and add any client inspection score. That shows range without a crowded page.
