Barista resume example

Cafe owners hire baristas who pull consistent shots, texture milk well and keep the line moving at 7:30 a.m. Prove it with drinks per hour, the espresso equipment you dial in, opening or closing duties you own and a current food handler card.

Steams milk for dairy and plant-based drinks, pours hearts and tulips, and keeps the pastry case stocked. Holds an Oregon food handler card. Open to early shifts and weekend coverage.

  • Mid level

Barista and shift lead with four years in specialty coffee, dialing in espresso every morning on a two-group machine and two grinders. Completed SCA Barista Skills Intermediate and pours rosettas during the busiest shifts.

  • Senior

Writes the espresso recipes with the roaster each week, sets milk and syrup pars, and schedules a crew of 11. Brought average ticket time down to under 4 minutes after redesigning the bar layout and handoff point.

  • Roaster cafe

Barista at a small-batch roastery cafe who helps cup new lots on Tuesdays, writes tasting notes for the menu board and talks customers through bag purchases for home brewing. Common mistakes on a barista resume

  • Calling yourself a coffee lover instead of showing skill

Fix: Every barista applicant likes coffee. Show what you can actually do: dial in a grinder each morning, adjust grind size when shots run fast, steam milk for oat and whole milk without scalding, and brew pour-over to a recipe. One bullet on keeping shot times in range beats any line about loving coffee.

  • Skipping opening and closing duties

Fix: Owners need people they can trust with keys. If you opened alone, write what that meant: setting up the bar, calibrating espresso, brewing batch coffee and opening the doors on time. For closing, mention backflushing, cleaning the grinder, counting the drawer and locking up.

  • Leaving out the regulars

Fix: Neighborhood cafes depend on people who come back every day. Mention that you learned regulars' names and orders, started their drinks when they walked in. One short bullet on repeat customers tells an owner you add to the cafe's mood, not just its speed.

  • Ignoring food, cleaning and stock

Fix: If your cafe sold pastries and sandwiches, you probably handled them too. Include food prep, labeling and date rotation, the cleaning schedule you followed and any ordering of milk, cups or beans you did. It shows you can keep the cafe running when the manager is off.

What should a barista resume include?

A barista resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Espresso Extraction, Dialing In and Grind Adjustment. Start bullets with verbs like Dialed in, Steamed and Brewed, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Food Handler Card (state or county issued), list it in its own section.

Barista resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Dialed in espresso on two grinders each morning, keeping shots within a 26 to 30 second range across about 400 drinks a day.
  • Prepared up to 110 drinks per hour on bar during the 7 to 9 a.m. rush with a remake rate under 2%.
  • Opened the cafe alone four days a week, setting up bar, brewing batch coffee and unlocking at 6:00 a.m. on schedule.
  • Trained 7 new baristas on milk texturing and drink builds, getting each to work bar solo within two weeks.
  • Learned the names and usual orders of about 60 regulars and started their drinks as they walked in.
  • Grew pastry add-ons at the register by roughly 18% over a quarter by suggesting a pairing with each drink order.
  • Backflushed the espresso machine and cleaned grinders nightly, which helped the cafe go 14 months without a service call.
  • Built three seasonal drinks with the manager, including a maple oat latte that sold about 900 cups in its first month.

How to stand out as a barista applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Read the cafe before you rewrite

A specialty cafe, a grocery coffee bar and a drive-through stand hire for different things. Check their menu and social posts. If they list single origins and pour-over, lead with brewing and extraction. If they sell flavored drinks at speed, lead with drinks per hour and accuracy. Then match your availability to their opening hours. Fit your resume to this cafe

  • Write a note about their coffee

When a cafe asks for a cover letter, keep it to a short paragraph or two. Mention a drink or coffee you tried there and what you liked, then give your shift history and the hours you can work. Small cafe owners often read these themselves. Draft a barista cover letter

  • Expect to make a drink

Barista interviews often end at the machine. You may be asked to pull a shot, steam milk and pour a latte or cappuccino, or talk through why a shot ran fast. Practice explaining dose and yield in plain words, and prepare an answer for a rude customer and for a rush when the grinder needs adjusting. Prepare for a barista interview

  • Give each cafe job its own clear line

Baristas often change cafes or work two at once, and a list of short jobs can confuse a reader. Give each cafe one line with its type, such as specialty, chain or drive-through, and keep overlapping jobs dated clearly. A quick check of the finished page catches missing months and repeated bullets. Check your barista resume

Barista resume questions

What goes on a barista resume with no coffee experience?

Lead with any job where you handled customers, cash or speed: fast food, retail checkout, a campus dining hall. Say how many people you served per shift and how you kept orders right. Add a food handler card, which is often a short online course, and mention any home espresso practice or a cafe training course.

Is a food handler card required for baristas?

In several states and counties, yes. Oregon, Washington, California and Texas are among the states that require food workers to hold a food handler card or complete an approved course soon after hire. Other areas leave it to the employer. List the card with the state and expiration year, since many cafes ask for it either way.

Do SCA certificates matter for barista jobs?

They help most at specialty roasters and third-wave cafes, where owners care about extraction, brew ratios and milk chemistry. The Specialty Coffee Association runs Barista Skills courses at foundation, intermediate and professional levels. Typical cafe jobs do not require them, so list them if you have them and lead with the shifts you have worked.

Should I mention latte art on my resume?

Yes, briefly and specifically. Name the pours you can do reliably, like a heart, tulip or rosetta, and say whether you do them on every drink during a rush. Bring a short video or photos to the interview, since owners usually ask you to make a drink anyway.
