Interior Designer resume example

Interior design firms check three things early: the project types you have delivered, how far through construction documents and site visits you carry a job, and your NCIDQ status. Give square footage, budgets and the codes you designed to, and link a portfolio with plans as well as renderings.

Interior Designer resume objective examples

An objective fits when you have no direct experience in the role yet. Name the role, the proof you already have and what you will bring to the team.

  • Graduate

Recent graduate of a CIDA-accredited interior design program with a hospitality studio project, a 400-hour internship at a workplace firm and working Revit and AutoCAD skills. Seeking a junior designer role that builds the qualified hours I need for the NCIDQ.

Common mistakes on an interior designer resume

  • Renderings with no plans or details

Fix: Beautiful views can hide whether you can document a project. Add a floor plan, an elevation and a detail you drew to the portfolio. On the resume, say which phases you led, from programming and schematic design through construction documents and construction administration.

  • Vague about project size and budget

Fix: "Designed offices" could mean a small suite or a headquarters floor. Give square footage, the construction or FF&E budget and your role on the team. Use the unit the sector uses: hospitality firms count keys, healthcare firms count beds and departments, workplace firms count seats.

  • Implying a credential you do not hold

Fix: In states with title laws, calling yourself a registered or certified interior designer without the credential can cause real trouble. Write your exact status: NCIDQ certified with the year, exam sections passed, or eligible to test. Match your job title to the work you did, decorator or designer.

  • Leaving out codes and coordination

Fix: Commercial employers need to know you design to code. Mention the IBC, accessibility standards such as the ADA Standards and ICC A117.1, egress and fire ratings, and the consultants you coordinated with. A bullet about catching a clearance issue before permit review proves more than "knowledge of codes".

What should an interior designer resume include?

An interior designer resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Programming, Schematic Design and Design Development. Start bullets with verbs like Planned, Specified and Detailed, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as NCIDQ Certification, list it in its own section.

Interior Designer resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Planned a 38,000 square foot office fit-out for 260 staff, running three test fits with the client before the final layout was approved.
  • Produced construction sets with finish schedules, ceiling plans and millwork details for 9 projects, each issued for permit with no interiors code comments.

  • Presented concept boards and SketchUp walkthroughs at 14 owner design reviews, winning first-round approval on most finish palettes.
  • Brought a 1960s clinic up to accessibility standards, replanning 12 restrooms and exam rooms to ADA clearances inside the existing footprint.

How to stand out as an interior designer applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Use the firm's project types and units

Look at the firm's published work before you edit. If they show hospitality, lead with keys, brand standards and procurement. If they do healthcare, lead with departments, cleanable finishes and phasing. Move the closest project to the top, mirror the sector words in the posting and drop residential detail a commercial firm will skip. Tailor your resume to this firm's sectors

  • Name one of their projects in the letter

Open with a built project from the firm's site and one thing you noticed about how it was planned or detailed. Connect it to a project of yours with the same problem, such as a tight floor plate or a phased renovation. Close with your NCIDQ status and Revit level. Start an interior design cover letter

  • Prepare a portfolio walkthrough and a drawing test

Many interviews center on a portfolio review. Pick two projects and explain the brief, the constraints, your role and what changed during construction. Some firms add a Revit or AutoCAD exercise or ask you to red-line a plan. Rehearse answers about a budget cut you absorbed and a client who changed direction late. Practice for your design firm interview

  • Show exam progress honestly

If you are working toward the NCIDQ, list the sections passed and your next exam date, and keep your own log of qualified hours so you can answer when asked. Firms that pay exam fees or give study time tend to raise it in the first call, so keep the line short and accurate. Review your credentials section

Interior Designer resume questions

When can I put NCIDQ on my resume?

Write "NCIDQ Certified" with the year only after you pass all three exams (IDFX, IDPX and Practicum) and receive the certificate. Before that, list your progress, such as "IDFX passed, IDPX scheduled". Eligibility depends on your education and qualified work hours, so check CIDQ's current routes before you plan a timeline.

Do I need a state license to work as an interior designer?

It depends on the state. A few states regulate the practice of commercial interior design, and more protect titles such as "registered interior designer". Much residential work needs no state credential. Check your state board, list any registration you hold with its state, and avoid a protected title where you are not registered.

Should I separate residential and commercial work?

If you have both, lead with the side the posting asks for. Commercial, hospitality and healthcare firms want codes, documentation and coordination with architects and engineers. Residential studios care about client relationships, sourcing and budget control on finishes and furniture. Keep the other side to a line or two so the page stays focused.

How much software detail should I give?

Name each tool and what you do in it: AutoCAD for plans and details, Revit for models and sheet sets, SketchUp or Enscape for client views, Bluebeam for markups. Firms working in Revit may test you, so be honest about whether you build families and set up sheets or only edit an existing model.
