Hotel Manager resume example

Owners and management companies size you up by the property you ran: keys, service level, brand or independent, outlets and meeting space. Next they look at RevPAR, ADR and occupancy against the comp set, GOP and flow-through, and guest and brand audit scores. State the property profile under every title, then prove each claim with one of those measures.

Common mistakes on a hotel manager resume

  • Listing departments without the property profile

Fix: "Oversaw front office, housekeeping and engineering" reads the same for 80 keys or 400. Add keys, service level, brand or independent, outlets, meeting space, annual rooms revenue if you may share it and total staff. That one line tells an owner whether you have run a hotel like theirs.

  • Quoting occupancy on its own

Fix: High occupancy can come from heavy discounting. Pair it with ADR and RevPAR, and show your RevPAR index against the comp set, such as "RGI from 96 to 108 in 18 months." Owners care about rate and profit together, so add GOP margin or flow-through when you can share it.

  • Skipping the owner relationship

Fix: A hotel manager works for owners and often an asset manager. Show the budget you built, the monthly reporting you presented, capital plans you scoped and any property improvement plan you delivered on time and on budget. Those bullets show you can be trusted with someone else's asset.

  • Treating guest scores as soft results

Fix: Guest satisfaction is measured, so report it like revenue. Give your guest satisfaction or intent-to-recommend score and its change, your review ranking in the market, and brand quality audit results. Then tie one score to an action you took, such as retraining the front desk on arrival or fixing a recurring maintenance complaint.

What should a hotel manager resume include?

A hotel manager resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as RevPAR, ADR and Occupancy. Start bullets with verbs like Directed, Repositioned and Forecast, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA), American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute, list it in its own section.

How to stand out as a hotel manager applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the property type in each posting

A resort posting reads for outlets, groups and seasonality. A select-service posting reads for lean labor and GOP. A management company may want multi-property or brand conversion work. Move the property most like theirs to the top, put their brand family or service level in your headline if you have it, and trim departments they do not have. Tailor your resume to a hotel posting

  • Write the cover letter to the owner's problem

Read the hotel's reviews and its position in the market before writing. If reviews mention tired rooms, lead with your renovation or PIP work. If rate lags the market, lead with RevPAR index gains. Keep it to three short paragraphs, end with your availability for a site visit and mention any relocation plans. Draft a hotel manager cover letter

  • Prepare for the owner interview

Expect questions on how you build a budget, what you do when the month is tracking behind forecast, how you handle a guest complaint that reaches the brand, and how you hire for housekeeping in a tight labor market. Bring a one-page summary of your current property's results, with numbers you are allowed to share. Practice hotel manager interview questions

  • Line up your LinkedIn with the resume

Management companies and owners often look you up before calling. Use the same titles, dates and property profiles on LinkedIn as on your resume, add a headline with your current role and property type, and list your CHA or other credentials there too. Gaps between the two raise questions you do not need. Improve your LinkedIn profile

Hotel Manager resume questions

Is the CHA worth listing, and can I list it in progress?

The Certified Hotel Administrator from AHLEI is a well-known credential for general managers and senior managers, and it has eligibility rules tied to your management experience. Check the current requirements on the AHLEI site before you apply. If you hold it, put it in your headline or certifications line. If you are enrolled, write "CHA candidate, exam scheduled" with a date, never just "CHA."

How do I present select-service versus full-service experience?

Write the service level and size in a scope line under each title: "112-key select-service hotel, franchised, one breakfast outlet" or "260-key full-service resort, three outlets, 18,000 square feet of meeting space, union housekeeping." A full-service owner will read for banquets, outlets and group sales; a select-service owner will read for lean labor models and GOP.

What numbers should I show if the owners keep the financials private?

Index numbers and changes are usually safe to share. Your RevPAR index (RGI) against the comp set, the change in ADR, occupancy points gained, GOP margin change, guest satisfaction scores and brand audit results all prove performance without revealing the owners' revenue. Leave out anything covered by a confidentiality agreement.

I'm an assistant GM or front office manager. How do I step up?

Pull forward the parts of the GM job you already do. Building part of the budget, presenting at the monthly owner call, covering as manager on duty, running a department during a renovation or leading a brand audit all count. Give each its own bullet with a result, and name the departments you have led directly.

Should I name the hotel brand?

Yes, as it appears publicly. Brand experience matters because owners want someone who already knows that brand's standards, systems and audits. Name the property and the flag the way guests see it, and add the management company if it was a third-party operator. If you moved between brands, a short line about each brand's systems helps the reader.
