Home Health Aide resume example

Home care agencies hire aides they can send alone into a client's home, so they read for trust and independence: your HHA training or state certification, how many clients you visit and how far you drive, and the care you give with no nurse in the room. Back it with visit counts, EVV accuracy, care plan follow-through and clear reports of changes to the supervising nurse.

Home Health Aide resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Home health aide who finished a 76-hour training program with 20 hours of supervised practice and passed the competency evaluation on the first try. Already cared for a grandparent at home, handling transfers, bathing and meals for a low-sodium diet. Has a reliable car, a clean driving record and availability for weekday and weekend visits across the north side of the city.

  • Mid level

Home health aide with five years at a Medicare-certified agency, visiting 5 or 6 clients a day across two counties. Gives bathing, dressing and transfer help to post-surgical and stroke clients, follows aide care plans set by the RN and therapists, and reports changes the same day. Kept EVV clock-ins at 99% accuracy for three years running.

  • Senior

Senior home health aide and field mentor with eleven years in home care, including hospice and pediatric clients with complex needs. Orients new aides on ride-along visits, covers last-minute call-outs and helps the scheduler match aides to clients by language and skill. Holds both CNA and HHA credentials, fluent in Haitian Creole and English, with no missed visits in two years.

Common mistakes on a home health aide resume

  • Describing hands-on care as "companionship"

Fix: If you bathed, transferred, toileted and dressed clients, say so in plain words. Agencies place aides by skill, and "companion" sounds like light duty. Keep within aide scope, which varies by state: describe tasks such as emptying catheter bags or reminding about medications only if your agency and state allow aides to do them.

  • Leaving out the supervising nurse and care plan

Fix: Home health aides work from a care plan written by a registered nurse or therapist, with regular supervisory visits. Show that you follow it and report back: "Followed RN-written aide care plans for 22 clients and called the case nurse the same day about any change." That line shows you know where your role ends.

  • Not showing your visit load and territory

Fix: Schedulers want to know how many clients you can see and where. Give visits a day or week, the counties or neighborhoods you cover and your on-time record. A bullet such as "6 visits a day across 2 counties, 98% on time" reads as dependable and makes you easier to place.

  • Forgetting home safety and reporting duties

Fix: Homes are not hospitals. Mention fall hazard checks, bag technique and PPE use, safe disposal of sharps where allowed, and your training on recognizing abuse, neglect and exploitation. Mandated reporting rules vary by state, so describe the training you received and the process you followed rather than citing a specific law.

What should a home health aide resume include?

A home health aide resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Bathing & Showering, Dressing and Toileting & Incontinence Care. Start bullets with verbs like Visited, Bathed and Assisted, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Home Health Aide (HHA) certificate from a training and competency evaluation program, list it in its own section.

Home Health Aide resume bullet examples

  • Covered 40 last-minute call-out visits in one year so that no scheduled client went without care.
  • Escorted 3 clients to weekly dialysis and medical appointments, keeping a shared log so families and nurses saw every change.

How to stand out as a home health aide applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the client population in each posting

Agencies post for specific needs: a hospice case, a pediatric client, a bilingual aide in one neighborhood. Put the matching client type and language in your headline, move those visits into your first bullets, and repeat the posting's terms, such as Hoyer lift or the EVV app they use, when they are true for you. Tailor your home health aide resume

  • Answer the scheduler's questions in your letter

Schedulers want to know where you can go and when. In a few sentences, give your certification, the areas and hours you can cover, whether you drive, the languages you speak and one example of a long-term client you cared for. That helps them match you to a client quickly. Write a home health aide cover letter

  • Prepare for safety and boundary questions

Home care interviews ask what you would do if a client falls, refuses a bath, offers you money or a gift, or if you see signs of neglect. Answer with your steps: keep the client safe, call the supervising nurse or agency, then document. Bring your certificate, photo ID and proof of your driving record. Practice home health aide interview questions

  • Check that it reads well on a phone

Agency recruiters may read your resume on a phone between client calls. Keep it simple: one column, plain headings and a credentials line near the top showing HHA, CNA and CPR status. Run it through the resume checker to catch missing dates, unclear titles and formatting that breaks when you upload it. Check your resume

Home Health Aide resume questions

What training do I need to work as a home health aide?

For Medicare-certified home health agencies, federal rules (42 CFR 484.80) require aides to complete a training program of at least 75 hours, including at least 16 hours of supervised practical training, and pass a competency evaluation, or to pass a qualifying competency evaluation alone. Many states add more hours or a registry listing, and private-pay agencies follow state rules. List your program, hours and year.

Is a CNA the same as an HHA?

Not exactly. A CNA is listed on a state nurse aide registry and trained mainly for nursing homes and hospitals; an HHA is trained for care in clients' homes. Some states and agencies accept CNA training toward HHA requirements, sometimes with an added home care module. Ask the agency, and if you hold both, list both on the same credentials line.

Should I mention my car and driving record?

Yes, when the job involves driving between clients. Write that you have a valid driver's license, a reliable vehicle, insurance and a clean record, and name the areas or counties you can cover. Do not print your license number. If you rely on public transit, say which routes or neighborhoods you can reach so the scheduler can plan around it.

How do I describe one long-term client?

Treat it like a full job entry. Give the dates, the hours a week, the client's general needs (for example, stroke recovery with one-sided weakness) and what you did each visit. Then add a result: no falls during your visits, a stable weight, fewer missed appointments. Leave out names and anything that could identify the client.

What is EVV, and should I put it on my resume?

Electronic Visit Verification records the time, place and service of each visit. Under the 21st Century Cures Act, states must use EVV for Medicaid-funded personal care and home health services. Agencies depend on accurate clock-ins for billing, so listing the EVV app you use and your accuracy rate shows you will not create extra work for the office.
