Cashier resume example

A cashier resume is read for trust and speed. Store leads want to know your drawer balanced, how many customers you rang up on a busy shift and which tenders you handled, like cash, cards, EBT or WIC. Add ID checks for restricted items, returns you processed and the hours you can work. Give one number for each, even if it is a range.

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

Common mistakes on a cashier resume

  • Writing "operated the cash register" and stopping there

Fix: Every cashier does that. Add volume and accuracy: "Rang up 180 to 220 customers per shift on a six-lane grocery front end, balancing the drawer within a dollar on 96% of shifts." A manager can picture the store and trust that you will not need close watching at a busy register.

  • Leaving out the tender types you handle

Fix: Cash, credit, contactless, checks, gift cards, EBT/SNAP and WIC each have their own steps, and WIC approved-item rules differ by state. Listing the ones you handle shows you can work any lane without calling for help. If you split tenders or processed manual card entries during an outage, mention it.

  • Hiding the wins you got at the register

Fix: Stores track loyalty sign-ups, store credit card applications, donation round-ups and customer compliments by cashier. If you led the front end in any of them, give the count and the period, such as "signed up 380 loyalty members in 12 months." These are small numbers that a store manager notices.

  • Ignoring line management and price problems

Fix: A good cashier knows when to call for backup, when to open a lane and how to handle a price that rings up wrong. Describe how you dealt with price disputes, voids and overrides with a supervisor, and how you kept a line moving during a rush. It shows judgment, not only scanning speed.

What should a cashier resume include?

A cashier resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as POS Terminal, Cash Drawer Count and Credit and Contactless Cards. Start bullets with verbs like Processed, Balanced and Scanned, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as NRF Foundation RISE Up Customer Service and Sales, list it in its own section.

Cashier resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Rang up an average of 210 customers per shift on a six-lane grocery front end during the holiday season.
  • Balanced the cash drawer within a dollar on 98% of 240 shifts in one year, with no unresolved shortages.
  • Signed up 380 customers for the store loyalty program in 12 months, the most of 16 cashiers.
  • Checked ID on every alcohol and tobacco sale and passed 4 of 4 unannounced compliance checks.
  • Processed 1,500 EBT and WIC transactions a month, splitting tenders correctly by approved items.
  • Caught 3 counterfeit bills in one quarter using marker and watermark checks and turned them in to the manager per policy.
  • Covered the customer service desk 2 shifts a week, handling about 40 returns, exchanges and money orders each shift.
  • Shortened express lane waits by calling for backup whenever lines passed 4 customers, a practice the store adopted for all cashiers.
  • Collected $2,600 in register round-up donations for a local food bank campaign in 6 weeks.
  • Trained 6 new cashiers on the POS, coupon policy and closing count during their first week.

How to stand out as a cashier applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Fit the resume to the store type

A grocery posting may stress EBT, WIC, produce codes and speed. A pharmacy or convenience store may stress ID checks and age-restricted items. A department store may want returns and store card sign-ups. Read the posting, move the matching bullets to the top and use the same words for the systems and duties it names. Tailor your cashier resume to the store

  • Keep the cover letter short and practical

Three short paragraphs are enough. Say which position and store you want, give your availability and when you can start, then share one example of accuracy or service, such as your drawer record or a compliment from a regular customer. If you are a student, mention your school schedule and that you can work holidays and breaks. Write a cashier cover letter

  • Prepare for register questions

Expect questions like how you would handle a customer who says you gave the wrong change, or someone without ID trying to buy beer. Practice counting back change out loud. Have a short answer ready about a time you stayed calm in a rush, and know exactly which days and times you can work before you walk in. Practice cashier interview questions

  • Moving from the register to the sales floor?

If you want a sales floor, stock or keyholder role next, your bullets need more selling, stockroom and merchandising work. Compare your resume with a retail associate example and borrow the sections that fit, such as add-on sales or shipment processing, but only for work you have actually done. Ask your manager to cross-train you first. See a retail associate resume example

Cashier resume questions

What do I put on a cashier resume with no job experience?

Use anything where you handled money, people or a schedule. Running a school store, a fundraiser cash box, a concession stand or a food pantry check-in table all count. Add your attendance record, any math or business classes and a teacher or coach who can serve as a reference. Then put your availability near the top, since a front-end lead builds the schedule first.

How do I show cash handling accuracy?

Use your drawer record. Say how often you balanced within the store's tolerance and over how many shifts, for example "balanced within a dollar on 97% of 260 shifts." Mention till audits you passed, safe drops you made during rushes and any counterfeit bills you caught and reported. If you counted the drawer at open or close, add that as well.

Are there age rules for cashiers who sell alcohol or tobacco?

Rules vary by state. Some states set a minimum age for employees who ring up alcohol, sometimes with different rules for beer and wine than for liquor, and stores can set stricter policies of their own. If you meet the age and have been trained on ID checks, say so. If you are under the age, say you can call a supervisor to complete those sales.

Should I mention the register system I used?

Yes. Name the POS if you know it, such as NCR, Square or Clover, or describe it as the store's own system. Add related equipment you used, like scanner scales, self-checkout stations or handheld price checkers. Stores train you on their system, but a manager will expect a faster ramp from someone who has already worked a similar one.

How do I move up to head cashier or the service desk?

Show the tasks that sit above the register. Training new cashiers, counting drawers for other staff, covering the customer service desk, handling money orders and refunds, or scheduling breaks on the front end all point to head cashier. Ask your manager to cross-train you on one of these before you apply, then add a bullet with a number.
