Best free resume builders in 2026: what you can really download

Many resume builders are free to build in and paid to download. This list is about the other kind: tools whose free plan gives you a resume you can send. For each, we say exactly what the free plan downloads and what it holds back.

Ruubu is our product and is on this list with its pros and cons. Every other entry links to the company's own pages under Sources. Nobody paid to be listed.

Which resume builder is really free?

FlowCV gives the cleanest free resume: no watermark and unlimited PDF downloads, for one resume. Canva is free for design-led resumes, Kickresume allows unlimited free downloads, and Ruubu adds a free ATS check with a marked PDF. Zety, MyPerfectResume and LiveCareer download only TXT for free.

How we chose and checked

  • A tool is on the list only if its free plan downloads a resume in a format you would send (PDF), according to its own pages, read on 24 October 2026.
  • Entries are alphabetical. Each one lists the free plan's limits and the price of the upgrade.
  • Builders whose free plan only downloads TXT are covered in a separate section below, with their trial prices.
  • Ruubu is our product and is listed with its limits.

Free to build, paid to download

Several well-known builders let you write for free but only download plain text. On Zety the free plan downloads TXT and the trial is $1.70 for 14 days, renewing at $23.95 every 4 weeks. MyPerfectResume and LiveCareer also download TXT for free, with $2.95 and $2.95 trials that renew at $23.95 every 4 weeks.

Resume.io's price page says its free plan downloads TXT, while its help center adds a free PDF in one template; its trial is $2.95 for 7 days. Resume Genius's free plan also downloads a text file, with a $2.95 trial for 14 days.

A text file is fine for pasting into an application form, but most people want a formatted PDF to attach. If you start a trial to get one, put the renewal date in your calendar.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16]

Free and readable by applicant tracking software

A free design is only useful if the software reading it gets the order right. Single-column layouts with standard headings are the safest. Canva's resume pages make no ATS claim; FlowCV says it exports text-based PDFs. Whatever you use, run the PDF through a checker before you apply online.[8][17]

Questions

Is there a resume builder that is completely free?
FlowCV's free plan is the closest we found: one resume and one cover letter, no watermark, unlimited PDF downloads. Canva is free for its free templates.
Why can I only download TXT on Zety or LiveCareer?
Their free plans download plain text only; PDF and Word need paid access, which starts with a short trial that renews every 4 weeks.
Does Ruubu's free PDF have a watermark?
A small Ruubu mark. The Resume Pass ($7.99/mo) gives a clean PDF and an editable DOCX.
Which free builder is best for ATS?
Use a simple single-column template in any of them, then check the PDF. Ruubu's checker does that for free without an account.
Are free plans time-limited?
Enhancv's free plan lasts 7 days, and Novoresume's help center describes a limited free download period. FlowCV, Kickresume, Canva and Ruubu do not describe a time limit on their free plans.
