Web Developer resume example

Web developer hiring is about live sites. Agencies and in-house teams want to see websites you built or rebuilt, the CMS behind them, how fast and accessible they are, and proof you can handle the whole job, from hosting and forms to handing the site to the people who edit it.

Web Developer resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Junior web developer with a coding bootcamp certificate and a year of freelance work for local businesses. Built eight small business sites in WordPress and plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, set up hosting, SSL and contact forms, and trained each owner to update their pages. Every site in my portfolio passes keyboard and screen reader checks.

  • Mid level

Web developer with five years at a digital agency, building and maintaining client websites on WordPress, Shopify and a headless CMS with React. Launches about ten sites a year, runs accessibility audits to WCAG 2.2 AA, and handles redirects and analytics at launch. Brought a hospital foundation's donation pages from a 4-second load to under 2 seconds.

  • Senior

Lead web developer with eleven years across agency and in-house teams. Manages a team of four developers, sets the agency's starter theme, code review and launch checklist, and scopes projects with account managers. Owns hosting and security updates for 60 client sites and has led migrations from legacy CMS platforms without losing search traffic.

  • Freelance developer

Freelance web developer serving about 20 small businesses, from dental offices to breweries. Quotes, builds and hosts WordPress and Webflow sites, writes clear scopes so projects stay on budget, and keeps most clients on a monthly care plan for updates and backups. Looking to bring that client sense to an agency team.

Web Developer resume objective examples

An objective fits when you have no direct experience in the role yet. Name the role, the proof you already have and what you will bring to the team.

  • Bootcamp graduate

Bootcamp graduate with three deployed projects, including a volunteer site for a food pantry built in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Looking for a junior web developer role at an agency where I can learn WordPress and client work.

  • Graphic designer

Graphic designer with six years of brand and print work who has built a dozen Webflow and WordPress sites for design clients. Moving into a web developer role where I handle the build as well as the layout.

Common mistakes on a web developer resume

  • Listing every language you have touched

Fix: A row of fifteen languages makes a reader wonder which ones you actually ship with. Group skills by what you use on real sites, such as markup, CMS platforms and tooling. Lead with what the posting names and drop anything you could not use in a code test tomorrow.

  • Linking sites that no longer show your work

Fix: Client sites get redesigned, and links break. Check every portfolio link before you apply. If a site has changed, keep a case study page with screenshots, the stack and your role instead of the live link. A broken link on a web developer resume undercuts the rest of the page.

  • Forgetting the people who edit the site

Fix: On small teams, marketers usually update the pages, not developers. Mention the content models, custom blocks or page templates you built, the editors you trained and how you cut their support requests. Hiring managers want developers whose sites stay usable after handoff.

  • Hiding the client and budget side

Fix: Agency and freelance roles depend on scoping and communication. Mention estimates you wrote, hours you tracked against budget, launches you kept on schedule and clients you met with directly. Small teams need a developer who can explain trade-offs to a non-technical owner.

What should a web developer resume include?

A web developer resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Semantic HTML, CSS Grid and Flexbox and JavaScript (ES6+). Start bullets with verbs like Built, Launched and Migrated, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as IAAP Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC), list it in its own section.

Web Developer resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Built and launched 14 client websites in one year on WordPress and Shopify, all delivered within the quoted hours.
  • Rebuilt a regional bank's site templates to meet WCAG 2.2 AA, fixing 230 audit issues across 40 page types.
  • Migrated 650 pages from a legacy CMS with a full redirect map, keeping organic search sessions within 5% of the prior quarter.
  • Cut mobile page load on a restaurant group's menu pages from 5.2 to 1.8 seconds by compressing images and removing two plugins.
  • Created 22 custom editor blocks so a marketing team could build landing pages alone, reducing developer tickets by about 40 a month.
  • Replaced a slow form plugin with a lightweight custom form, raising completed quote requests by 17% in the first two months.
  • Set up staging, Git-based deploys and nightly backups for 30 client sites, ending direct edits on production servers.
  • Wrote HTML email templates that rendered correctly in 12 tested email clients, used for a nonprofit's monthly newsletter.

How to stand out as a web developer applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match agency or in-house in each version

Agency postings want range: many sites, many platforms, deadlines and client contact. In-house postings want depth on one site: experiments, speed work, a component library and long-term upkeep. Keep a version of your resume for each, and move the platform named in the posting into your headline and first bullet. Tailor your resume to this web team

  • Open with a site that looks like theirs

Pick a project close to the employer's work, such as a university site for a higher-ed agency or a Shopify store for a retailer. Link it in the first lines with what you built and one result. Then name one thing on their site you could help with, like a form or mobile menu. Write a web developer cover letter

  • Practice a small build and a site review

Web developer interviews often include a take-home or live task, such as building a responsive card layout or fixing a broken form. Some ask you to review a slow or inaccessible page and explain what you would change first. Rehearse a walkthrough of your launch checklist and one project where a client changed scope late. Prepare for web developer interviews

  • Put three live sites up front

Link a portfolio in your header and lead it with three sites that match the job, each with your role, the stack and one outcome. Remove anything that no longer works or shows someone else's redesign. Test every link on a phone, since that is often where a hiring manager opens it first. Check your resume links and stack

Web Developer resume questions

Should I link my GitHub if most of my client work is private?

Yes, but curate it. Pin two or three repositories you can share, such as a starter theme, a small plugin or a personal site, and give each a short README. For client work, link the live site with permission and say what you built. A GitHub page full of forked tutorials helps less than one tidy repo.

How do I list client sites from an agency job?

Keep them under the agency role instead of creating a job entry for each client. Name the industries, such as healthcare, credit unions or restaurants, and the platforms you used. Link three or four sites you are proud of in a portfolio, and say which parts were yours if a team built them.

Do I need a computer science degree to get hired?

Plenty of web developers come from bootcamps, associate degree programs or self-teaching, and agencies often care more about live work than the diploma. Some larger employers and government roles list a bachelor's degree. Keep education short and let the portfolio carry the page.

Should I keep WordPress and PHP on my resume if the posting asks for React?

Usually yes. Many web teams run a CMS for marketing pages and a JavaScript framework for interactive parts, so both are useful. Put the posting's stack first in your skills and in the top bullets of each role, and keep CMS work further down unless the posting mentions it.
