Tax Accountant resume example

A tax hiring partner wants to know which returns you prepare and how complex they get. Name the forms, such as 1040, 1065, 1120-S, 1120 or 990, plus entity counts, states and whether you prepare, review or sign. Then show the technical work behind them: ASC 740 provisions, multistate apportionment, IRS notice responses or research memos. Put your EA or CPA where it is seen first.

Tax Accountant resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Tax associate with one season at a regional CPA firm preparing individual returns with rental, investment and self-employment schedules. Prepared 110 Form 1040s in CCH Axcess with a review note rate that fell steadily through April. Passed REG and TCP on the CPA exam and is working toward licensure, with partnership returns as the next goal.

  • Mid level

Enrolled agent with six years in public accounting, preparing and reviewing partnership, S corporation and high-income individual returns across 12 states. Reviews 70 staff returns a season, writes research memos on basis and passive activity rules, and resolves IRS and state notices for the firm's 400 business clients. Comfortable in UltraTax CS, Checkpoint and Bloomberg Tax.

  • Senior

Corporate tax manager and CPA with twelve years across a national firm and an in-house team. Owns the ASC 740 provision for a 14-entity consolidated group, federal and state compliance in 30 jurisdictions and audit defense. Moved the provision into ONESOURCE, cut the quarterly close for tax from nine days to five and closed two state audits with no adjustment.

Common mistakes on a tax accountant resume

  • Writing "prepared tax returns" with no forms or counts

Fix: Tax work is defined by form and complexity. Name the returns, how many of each, and the hard parts: multi-tier partnerships, composite filings, consolidated groups or foreign information returns such as Form 5471. A reviewer can then judge your level in seconds instead of guessing from your title.

  • Hiding whether you prepare, review or sign

Fix: The step from preparer to reviewer is the biggest jump in a tax career, so make it visible. Say how many returns you reviewed, how many staff you coached, and whether you were the final reviewer before a partner. If you sign returns as a paid preparer, say so with your credential.

  • Leaving out research and planning

Fix: Compliance alone reads as seasonal. Add the research you did, such as a memo on a Section 179 election, a nexus study for a client expanding into new states, or year-end projections that changed a client's estimated payments. Give the outcome in tax terms: liability reduced, exposure found, penalty avoided.

  • Burying representation work

Fix: Notice responses and audits show judgment under pressure. List the IRS and state notices you resolved, the exams you supported, and tools such as Form 2848, first-time penalty abatement or installment agreements. Note the count and the result, for example "closed 38 CP2000 notices, 31 with no additional tax."

What should a tax accountant resume include?

A tax accountant resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Form 1040, Form 1065 and Form 1120-S. Start bullets with verbs like Prepared, Reviewed and Researched, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), list it in its own section.

Tax Accountant resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Prepared 160 individual and 40 partnership returns in one season, with 92% cleared on first review.
  • Reviewed 75 staff-prepared S corporation and partnership returns, catching basis and K-1 allocation errors on 9 before filing.
  • Researched and documented a Section 179 and bonus depreciation strategy for a construction client buying 22 pieces of equipment, cutting the current-year liability by roughly a fifth.
  • Completed a nexus study for a software client selling into 31 states, registering it in 7 and filing voluntary disclosure agreements in 2.
  • Resolved 44 IRS CP2000 and state notices in a year, closing 36 with no additional tax and winning first-time penalty abatement on 5.
  • Built the quarterly ASC 740 provision for a 9-entity group in ONESOURCE, shrinking the return-to-provision true-up from 6% to under 1% of tax expense.
  • Filed pass-through entity tax elections for 28 partnership clients across 6 states and modeled the federal effect for each owner.
  • Trained 5 first-year associates on partnership workpapers and basis schedules, reducing review notes on their returns by about 40% by March.
  • Cut extension season rework 30% by building a client organizer checklist in CCH Axcess that flagged missing K-1s and brokerage statements in January.
  • Supported a 2-year IRS field exam of a family partnership, preparing 18 information document request responses and closing the exam with no change.

How to stand out as a tax accountant applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Lead with the returns the posting names

A firm hiring for a high-net-worth individual practice reads for 1040 complexity, trusts and gift returns. A corporate tax opening reads for provision and state compliance. Put the matching return types and counts in your top role, and cut seasonal duties that do not fit. Keep the posting's software names when you have used them. Match your tax resume to a job link

  • Say in the cover letter when you can start

Tax hiring follows the calendar, and many firms want people in place before January. State your earliest start date, your credential and the return types you know best. If you are changing from a retail office, from industry or from audit, explain the move in one sentence and point to the bullet that proves you are ready. Draft a tax accountant cover letter

  • Expect a technical walkthrough

Tax interviews often include a short case: how a partnership allocates income, when a state can require a return, or how a deferred tax item arises. Practice explaining one return you prepared from source documents to filing. Know the questions you would ask a client before you open the software. Practice tax interview questions

  • Compare against the broader accounting example

If a posting mixes tax with month-end close, bank reconciliations or audit support, it is closer to a general accounting job. Read the accountant example to see how close and reporting work is written, then add one or two of those bullets from your own experience so the hiring manager sees both sides. Tax Accountant resume questions

Enrolled Agent or CPA: which matters more on a tax resume?

Both credentials give unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS. The EA is tax-only and comes from passing the IRS three-part Special Enrollment Examination. The CPA is licensed by a state board and is required for attest work, so firms with audit practices often prefer it. Tax-only firms and representation practices value the EA highly. Put whichever you hold in your headline.

How do I show busy season volume without padding it?

Count returns by form and by your role in them: "prepared 140 individual returns and 35 partnership returns, reviewed 60 staff-prepared 1040s." Add what made them hard, such as multiple K-1s, several states or foreign reporting. Counts that separate preparing from reviewing are more believable than one large total, and they show where you sit in the review chain.

I prepared returns at a retail tax office. How do I make that count for a firm job?

Treat it as real experience. Give the season count, the schedules you handled (C, D, E, the education credits), your e-file reject rate and whether you held a PTIN and an AFSP Record of Completion. Be honest that business returns are new, then show steps toward them: coursework on partnerships, a few S corporation returns, or the EA exam in progress.

Should a corporate tax resume look different from a public accounting one?

Yes. In-house tax teams look for the quarterly and annual provision, estimated payments, state audits, return-to-provision true-ups and work with outside advisors. Firm postings look for client counts, entity types, review responsibility and research. If you are moving in-house, lead with any provision work you did for clients and the calendar you managed.

Do I need to list continuing education?

Not every hour. Enrolled agents must complete 72 hours every three years, and CPAs follow their state board's rules, so a reviewer assumes you are current if your credential is active. List a few recent courses only when they match the job, such as partnership basis, state pass-through entity tax elections or a recent federal law update.
