Solutions Architect resume example

The title covers two jobs: an internal architect who designs systems for one company, and a pre-sales or partner architect who designs for customers. Say which you are in the headline. Then show decisions and their consequences: the options you weighed, the design you chose, who signed off, and what it did for cost, uptime, delivery dates or a deal that closed.

Solutions Architect resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Solutions architect moving up from four years as a backend engineer, with the AWS Solutions Architect – Associate credential. Wrote the design documents for two cross-team integrations, ran a vendor evaluation for a message broker and presented cost estimates to engineering leadership. Wants an associate architect role where design reviews and customer conversations are part of the job.

  • Mid level

Solutions architect with seven years in software, the last three designing cloud and integration solutions for healthcare and retail clients. Led discovery and design for 20 customer engagements, ran 9 proofs of concept and wrote reference architectures the delivery team reuses. Holds AWS Solutions Architect – Professional and explains trade-offs clearly to engineers and executives.

  • Senior

Principal solutions architect with fourteen years in engineering and architecture across finance and healthcare. Designed the multi-region platform behind a core banking modernization, chaired the architecture review board and set integration standards adopted by 25 teams. Works with security, finance and product leaders on technology strategy and mentors a group of six architects.

Common mistakes on a solutions architect resume

  • Describing diagrams instead of decisions

Fix: "Created architecture diagrams" is a task. The value is in the choice: why event streaming over batch, why a managed database over self-hosted, what you traded away. Write the decision, the alternatives and the consequence, such as reduced recovery time or a launch date held. Reviewers read for judgment, and diagrams alone do not show it.

  • Hiding non-functional requirements

Fix: Availability targets, recovery objectives, data residency, latency budgets and compliance rules shape most designs. Show that you set or met them: "designed for 99.95% availability and a 15-minute recovery point across two regions." Name the regulation where relevant, such as HIPAA or PCI DSS, without claiming you certified compliance yourself.

  • Leaving out the people side

Fix: Architects succeed by getting agreement. Mention architecture review boards you presented to, stakeholders you aligned across security, finance and product, and how you handled disagreement on a design. A line about getting three teams to adopt one integration standard says a lot about influence.

  • Listing every cloud service you have heard of

Fix: A wall of service names makes it hard to see what you have designed with. Group by the problem solved: integration, data, identity, resilience. Keep the services you could defend in a design interview. For each group, a bullet should show one system where those services fit together.

What should a solutions architect resume include?

A solutions architect resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Solution Architecture, Architecture Decision Records and Reference Architecture. Start bullets with verbs like Designed, Scoped and Proposed, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional, list it in its own section.

Solutions Architect resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Designed a two-region active-passive architecture for a claims platform, meeting a 15-minute recovery point in every quarterly failover test.
  • Scoped and led technical discovery for 24 customer engagements, producing solution designs and estimates the delivery team used as baselines.
  • Proposed replacing nightly file transfers with event streaming on Kafka, cutting order-to-warehouse delay from 6 hours to 90 seconds.
  • Evaluated 4 API gateway products against security and cost criteria and wrote the decision record the company still follows.
  • Aligned 5 product teams on a shared identity design with OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect, retiring 3 separate login systems.
  • Presented a cloud migration business case to the CIO and CFO, securing approval for a 300-application move over 18 months.
  • Built a working proof of concept in 3 weeks that convinced a hospital network's review board to approve a HIPAA-aligned design.
  • Wrote 12 reference architectures for common customer patterns, cutting the average design phase from 6 weeks to 3.
  • Reduced projected infrastructure cost 28% by redesigning a data platform around managed services and storage tiering.
  • Chaired 40 architecture review sessions in a year and tracked every approved exception to a remediation date.

How to stand out as a solutions architect applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Tailor to internal or customer-facing work

Read the posting for clues: "customers," "pre-sales" and "partners" mean a customer-facing role, while "enterprise standards" and "review board" mean internal architecture. Lead with the matching type of work, use the platform the posting names, and move the other type lower or into one line. Tailor your architect resume

  • Use the cover letter to show how you explain

Architects are hired partly for how clearly they explain trade-offs. In the letter, describe one design decision in plain language: the problem, two options, why you picked one and what happened. Keep jargon low. A hiring manager reads it as a sample of how you would talk to their stakeholders. Generate a solutions architect cover letter

  • Practice a design whiteboard with trade-offs

Expect a case: design a system for a stated load, budget and compliance need, then defend it while the interviewer changes requirements. Practice talking through availability, data flow, security and cost in that order. Customer-facing roles add a mock discovery call, so prepare questions you would ask a client. Prepare for architect interviews

  • Check that the page reads for both audiences

Your resume is read by recruiters, engineering leads and sometimes business sponsors. Run it through a checker to spot dense jargon, missing outcomes and sections that bury your design work. Every bullet should make sense to a non-engineer and still name the technology for an engineer. Check your resume

Solutions Architect resume questions

How do I show architecture work when engineers did the building?

Write about the decisions you owned and the results that followed. "Designed the event-driven order flow, chose Kafka over a shared database after a two-week spike, and guided 3 teams through delivery" credits the team and shows your role. Name the documents you produced, such as design reviews or decision records, and how many teams worked from them.

Should a pre-sales solutions architect list revenue?

You can describe your part in deals without overstating it. Use counts and outcomes you can stand behind: proofs of concept run, technical wins, deals you supported, or renewals tied to a design you delivered. If your employer tracked technical win rate, include it. Avoid claiming sole credit for a sale that sales, product and support also worked on.

Which architect certifications matter most?

Cloud postings commonly ask for AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert or Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect. Enterprise or government roles sometimes ask for TOGAF. List the ones you hold with the year, since cloud certifications must be renewed. Put the one matching the employer's platform first.

How technical should a solutions architect resume be?

Technical enough that an engineering lead trusts you, and clear enough that a business sponsor understands the result. Name the services and patterns you designed with, then state the business effect in plain terms. Keep one or two hands-on items, such as a reference implementation or a proof of concept you coded, so reviewers know you can still build.

I am a senior engineer. How do I move into a solutions architect role?

Pull out the architecture work you already do: design documents you wrote, cross-team integrations you planned, vendor evaluations, cost estimates and presentations to leadership. Put those first in each role and move pure coding bullets lower. A professional-level cloud architect certification also helps show you have studied design across a whole platform.
