Site Reliability Engineer resume example

SRE teams screen for people who treat reliability as a measured product. Your resume should show SLOs you defined, error budgets you enforced, incidents you led and toil you removed with code. Put numbers on it: availability, mean time to recovery, pages per on-call week, alert noise cut. Kubernetes and Prometheus matter, but only next to outcomes.

Site Reliability Engineer resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Site reliability engineer with two years in production support and a year on a Kubernetes platform team. Built Prometheus dashboards and burn-rate alerts for six services, joined the on-call rotation and wrote Python tools that cut a weekly certificate renewal chore to zero. Holds the CKA and wants an SRE team with strong postmortem habits.

  • Mid level

SRE with six years running payment and streaming platforms on Kubernetes and AWS. Defined SLOs for 18 services, replaced noisy threshold alerts with burn-rate alerts and cut pages per on-call week from 31 to 6. Leads incidents as commander, writes Go tooling for safer deploys and plans capacity ahead of seasonal peaks.

  • Senior

Staff site reliability engineer with twelve years in production operations, the last eight leading SRE practice at payment and media companies. Introduced error budgets that product leaders now use to plan releases, brought mean time to recovery from 52 to 14 minutes and ran the game days that found two hidden single points of failure. Mentors six engineers.

Common mistakes on a site reliability engineer resume

  • Claiming "99.99% uptime" with no definition

Fix: An availability figure means little without the measurement behind it. Say what you measured, for whom and over what window: "99.95% of checkout requests under 300 ms over a rolling 28 days." Interviewers will ask how the SLI is computed, so write the bullet the way you would defend it.

  • Reading like a DevOps or sysadmin resume

Fix: Pipelines and server patching matter, but SRE roles hire for reliability engineering. Move SLOs, incident response, capacity planning and toil reduction to the top of each role. Keep CI/CD and configuration management as supporting lines. If the posting says SRE, the first bullet in each job should be about reliability.

  • Listing monitoring tools instead of signals

Fix: Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog and PagerDuty in a skills list tell a reader what you have touched. Bullets should say what you instrumented and why: the golden signals you added, alerts you turned from symptoms into SLO burn-rate alerts, traces that found a slow dependency, and how alert volume changed.

  • Skipping the postmortem culture work

Fix: Running blameless postmortems, tracking action items to completion and sharing incident reviews across teams are core SRE duties. Give a count, such as postmortems facilitated or action items closed, and one systemic fix that came out of the process. That shows you change how an organization learns from failure.

What should a site reliability engineer resume include?

A site reliability engineer resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Service Level Objectives, Error Budgets and Toil Reduction. Start bullets with verbs like Defined, Instrumented and Automated, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), list it in its own section.

Site Reliability Engineer resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Defined SLOs and error budgets for 22 customer-facing services and got product sign-off to pause launches when a budget ran out.
  • Replaced 340 threshold alerts with SLO burn-rate alerts, reducing pages per on-call week from 28 to 5.
  • Led incident command on 35 high-severity incidents and cut median time to recovery from 47 to 16 minutes.
  • Automated database failover testing in Go, turning a 6-hour manual quarterly drill into a 20-minute scheduled job.
  • Instrumented 14 services with OpenTelemetry traces, finding a retry storm that caused 60% of checkout timeouts.
  • Load-tested the order API with k6 at 3x peak traffic, exposing a connection-pool limit that was fixed before the holiday season.
  • Eliminated 18 hours a week of toil by writing a self-service tool for namespace creation and quota changes.
  • Ran 8 game days with Chaos Mesh that uncovered 2 single points of failure in the payment path, both removed within a quarter.
  • Built canary analysis into the deploy pipeline, catching 11 bad releases at 5% traffic before they reached all users.
  • Facilitated 60 blameless postmortems and tracked action items to a 92% on-time closure rate.

How to stand out as a site reliability engineer applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Read where the posting sits on the SRE spectrum

Some SRE roles are software engineering with an operations focus, others are operations with automation. Count how often the posting mentions coding versus on-call and infrastructure, then balance your bullets the same way. Put the SLO and incident work first for both, and adjust how much tooling code you show. Match your SRE resume to the posting

  • Tell one incident in the cover letter

A short incident story shows how you think under pressure: what broke, how you found it, how you restored service and what you changed so it would not happen again. Keep it to four sentences with the recovery time. Then say which part of their platform you would want to measure first. Write an SRE cover letter

  • Prepare for troubleshooting and design rounds

SRE interviews often include a live debugging scenario, a system design question with a reliability twist, and questions on Linux, networking and Kubernetes internals. Practice talking through what you would check first and why. Have a postmortem ready that you can walk through end to end, including the action items. Practice SRE interview scenarios

  • Rewrite operations bullets as reliability outcomes

"Monitored production systems" becomes stronger when it names the signal, the change and the result. If your bullets read like task lists, rework them so each one shows a number that moved: availability, recovery time, page volume, toil hours or capacity headroom. A bullet generator can give you a first draft to edit. Turn tasks into reliability bullets

Site Reliability Engineer resume questions

How do I show on-call experience without sounding like a firefighter?

Pair each incident with what changed afterward. "Led response to a 40-minute checkout outage, wrote the blameless postmortem and shipped the connection-pool limits that stopped it from recurring" shows the full loop. Add rotation facts too: how many services you covered, pages per week before and after your fixes, and whether you served as incident commander.

What if my company never formally adopted SLOs?

Describe the reliability targets you did work toward, even informal ones, and any measurement you added. Many SREs introduced SLOs themselves: picked the user-facing SLIs, built the dashboards and convinced product to accept an error budget. If you did that for even one service, it is a strong bullet. If not, show uptime and latency numbers you tracked.

How much coding should an SRE resume show?

Enough to prove you remove toil with software, not just run commands. Name the language, usually Go or Python, and what you built: a deploy safety check, an autoscaler policy, a Kubernetes operator, a tool that cut a manual runbook to one command. Postings vary from mostly operations to mostly software, so match the balance the posting describes.

Should I list chaos engineering and load testing?

Yes, with what you found. A game day that exposed a missing failover, or a load test that showed the database tipping over at twice current traffic, is concrete evidence of reliability work. Name the tool if you used one, such as k6, Locust, Gremlin or Chaos Mesh, and say what you fixed because of the result.
