Preschool Teacher resume example

Preschool directors scan for three things: credentials that meet their licensing or funding rules, the age group you have taught and how you track development. Name your CDA, degree or state early childhood license, the ages and group sizes in your rooms, the curriculum you used (Creative Curriculum, HighScope) and the assessment tool, such as Teaching Strategies GOLD or ASQ-3. Licensing and safety records matter too.

Common mistakes on a preschool teacher resume

  • Leaving out the children's ages and group size

Fix: "Preschool teacher" could mean a room of 8 two-year-olds or 20 pre-K students. Write the age range, group size and staff ratio in each job line. Directors need to see you have handled the ages and numbers in their open room, and the details show you understand licensing limits.

  • Describing play with no learning goal

Fix: Directors believe in play, but they also want to see the purpose. Tie activities to development: block play for early math, dramatic play for language, sensory tables for fine motor skills. Mention the curriculum and how you documented learning, such as GOLD observations or portfolio samples, so the play reads as planned teaching.

  • Skipping licensing, health and safety work

Fix: Preschool rooms are inspected, and lead teachers keep them ready. Say that you kept daily health checks, allergy lists, sign-in records and sanitizing logs, and give a result, such as a licensing visit with no violations in your room. Add pediatric first aid and CPR in your certifications.

  • Writing about families in one generic line

Fix: Strong programs treat families as partners. Count the conferences, home visits or family events you led, describe the tools you used, like an app, a daily sheet or translated notes, and give a result, such as how many families joined a literacy event or completed an ASQ with you.

What should a preschool teacher resume include?

A preschool teacher resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Play-based learning, Creative Curriculum and HighScope. Start bullets with verbs like Observed, Documented and Planned, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential (Council for Professional Recognition), list it in its own section.

How to stand out as a preschool teacher applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the program type in the posting

A Head Start opening, a public pre-K classroom and a private center each read for different credentials and terms. Put the credential the posting asks for at the top, lead with the room closest in ages and size, and use the program's own words, such as "school readiness goals" for Head Start or "pre-K standards" for a district. Optimize your resume for a preschool posting

  • Write the cover letter about how children learn with you

Describe one short moment from your room that shows your approach, like a block project that turned into a counting lesson. Then connect it to the center's curriculum, name your credential and age group, and mention how you work with families. Close with your availability, since many centers hire for a specific start date. Write a preschool teacher cover letter

  • Prepare for classroom scenario questions

Preschool interviews often include a classroom visit and questions about biting, separation anxiety, toilet learning, a child who hurts others and a family upset about an injury report. Prepare calm, specific answers that show positive guidance, safety steps and clear communication. Bring a sample lesson plan and a photo of a learning center you set up. Practice preschool teacher interview questions

  • Check that your resume reads like a lead teacher

Before you apply, read your resume as a director would. Does each job line say the ages and group size? Is your credential easy to find? Do your bullets show assessment, planning and family work, not only supervision? A resume checker can point out weak or vague lines so you can rewrite them with numbers. Preschool Teacher resume questions

Do I need a CDA, a degree or a teaching license?

It depends on the program. Private child care centers follow state licensing rules, which set minimum training for lead teachers and differ by state. Head Start has its own federal staff qualification rules. Public school pre-K often requires a bachelor's degree and a state teaching license with an early childhood endorsement. Read the posting and list whichever credential it names first, with the year.

What does the CDA involve, and how do I list it?

The CDA Credential from the Council for Professional Recognition requires 120 hours of early childhood training, 480 hours of experience with children in your setting, a professional portfolio, a verification visit and an exam. It is issued for a setting, such as preschool or infant-toddler, and is renewed every three years. List it with the setting and the year, for example "CDA, Preschool, 2021."

How do I show results when preschoolers are not tested?

Use the developmental tools your program already uses. Report the share of children meeting widely held expectations on GOLD checkpoints, the number of ASQ-3 screenings you completed and referred on, or growth in a language or social-emotional area between fall and spring. Add classroom quality scores, such as a CLASS observation, if your program shares them with staff.

How do I move from assistant teacher to lead teacher?

Show that you already do lead work. List lessons you planned, GOLD observations you entered, family conferences you held and times you ran the room alone. Then close the credential gap, often with a CDA or college credits in early childhood education, depending on your state's rules for lead teachers. Put the credential in progress with an expected date.

Should I separate infant-toddler and preschool experience?

Yes. The age groups need different skills, and licensing rules usually set different ratios and group sizes for them. Give each room its own entry or a clear line, such as "Toddler room, 18 to 30 months, 8 children with 2 teachers." If you are applying for preschool, put your three- to five-year-old room first and keep infant care shorter.
