Maintenance Technician resume example

Plant maintenance managers want a technician who keeps lines running, so your resume should read like a downtime log. Say which equipment you keep alive (conveyors, fillers, presses, packaging lines, boilers), which crafts you cover (mechanical, electrical, PLC, hydraulics), and the numbers you move: downtime hours, MTTR, PM completion and the CMMS you close work orders in.

Common mistakes on a maintenance technician resume

  • Duty lists instead of downtime results

Fix: "Performed preventive maintenance and repairs" fits every technician. Replace it with the line or asset and the outcome: unplanned downtime hours cut, MTTR improved, a repeat failure eliminated, or PM compliance raised. Even one number per job, pulled from CMMS history or the shift log, makes your work easier to picture.

  • Vague electrical and controls claims

Fix: Plants need to know your voltage limits and controls depth before they hand you a meter. State the highest voltage you work on, whether you are an NFPA 70E qualified person, which PLC and drive platforms you troubleshoot, and whether you read schematics and ladder logic. Precise limits read as safe; vague ones raise doubts.

  • Leaving out the CMMS and planning side

Fix: Good technicians close work orders with real notes, flag parts for reorder and suggest PM changes. Name the CMMS you use and what you do in it: writing failure codes, building job plans, updating PM frequencies or tracking spare parts. This shows a reliability mindset and helps you move toward planner or lead roles.

  • No safety program details

Fix: Maintenance carries the highest-energy hazards in a plant. Show lockout/tagout authorized-employee status, arc flash PPE training, confined space entry, hot work and work at heights. If you wrote machine-specific LOTO procedures or led a safety audit, include it. Plants look at this closely before giving anyone keys to the switchgear.

What should a maintenance technician resume include?

A maintenance technician resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Bearings & Seals, Gearbox Rebuilds and Laser Shaft Alignment. Start bullets with verbs like Troubleshot, Rebuilt and Aligned, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Certified Maintenance & Reliability Technician (CMRT), SMRP, list it in its own section.

  • Installed and wired 22 photo-eye and proximity sensors during a conveyor upgrade, finishing the changeover in a single weekend shutdown.
  • Trained 6 new technicians on line troubleshooting, PLC I/O checks and lockout, each signed off on independent work within 4 months.

How to stand out as a maintenance technician applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Tailor to the equipment on the posting

Maintenance postings often list the plant's machines and platforms: Allen-Bradley or Siemens, hydraulic presses, packaging lines, boilers. Put your matching equipment in your summary and first bullets, and drop older, unrelated machinery to a single line. If a platform is new to you, say what similar equipment you already know. Tailor your maintenance resume to the plant

  • Lead the cover letter with a breakdown you solved

Plant managers remember a story about a line that kept failing and the technician who stopped it. Open with one such case, give the downtime result and connect it to the type of equipment they run. Add the shifts you can work and whether you are available for call-outs and weekend shutdowns. Draft a maintenance technician cover letter

  • Expect a hands-on skills check

Many plants test technicians with a written or practical assessment: reading an electrical print, finding a fault on a trainer board, sizing a bearing or reading a hydraulic schematic. Review motor control basics, ladder logic symbols and your lockout steps. Prepare to walk through a breakdown from first call to root cause. Practice maintenance technician interview questions

  • Pull the crafts each posting really wants

Postings mix titles: maintenance mechanic, industrial electrician, multi-craft technician, reliability technician. Run a few local postings through a skills extractor to see which crafts and platforms come up most. Then make sure the top third of your resume covers them, with one proof bullet for each, and drop crafts no posting asks for. Pull maintenance skills from postings

Maintenance Technician resume questions

How do I show multi-craft skills without listing everything?

Group your skills by craft, such as mechanical, electrical, controls and facilities, and give each group one or two proof bullets. Put the strongest craft first, matched to the posting. A food plant hiring for a packaging line wants bearings, gearboxes and sensors near the top. A facility posting wants boilers, chillers and building systems first.

Do I need an electrical license for industrial maintenance?

It depends on the state, the city and the work. Some jurisdictions require a licensed electrician for new installation but not for in-plant repair by trained employees, and others are stricter. Many plants instead require NFPA 70E training and qualified-person status under their own program. List the license if you have one, and say exactly what electrical work you do.

Which reliability certification should I go for?

SMRP offers two that fit maintenance work. The CMRT is aimed at hands-on technicians and tests maintenance practice, troubleshooting and preventive work. The CMRP is aimed at planners, leads and managers and covers reliability strategy and business management. Choose the one that fits your next role, and list the exam year.

How do I write about PLC experience if I only troubleshoot?

Be precise. Say which platforms you work on and what you do: going online to read ladder logic, forcing outputs during testing, replacing I/O cards, swapping drives, or loading saved programs. If you have not written or changed logic, do not imply it. Accurate detail earns more trust than a broad "PLC programming" claim that falls apart in the interview.

Should I include facility and building maintenance work?

Yes, if the posting covers it or if it fills a gap in your history. Boilers, rooftop units, chillers, air compressors, plumbing and building automation are all part of plant uptime. Keep it accurate about refrigerant work, since handling refrigerant in stationary systems requires EPA Section 608 certification. List the 608 type you hold.
