Lab Technician resume example

Clinical labs hire technicians who turn out accurate results on schedule. Put your MLT(ASCP) or equivalent first, then the departments you can run alone and the analyzers you know. Back it up with specimen volume, turnaround times, QC habits and inspections your section passed.

Lab Technician resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Newly certified MLT(ASCP) with an associate degree from a NAACLS-accredited program and 640 practicum hours in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology and blood bank. Previously worked two years as a specimen processor, so accessioning, rejection criteria and LIS work are routine. Ready for an evening or weekend bench position in a hospital core lab.

  • Mid level

Medical laboratory technician with six years in a 250-bed hospital core lab, covering hematology, chemistry and urinalysis alone on evenings. Runs about 400 specimens a shift, performs daily QC with Westgard review and troubleshoots analyzer errors before calling service. Trains new processors in Epic Beaker and helped the lab pass two CAP inspections without deficiencies.

  • Senior

Lead MLT and section coordinator with thirteen years in hospital and reference labs, now overseeing chemistry and urinalysis for a 24-hour lab. Writes procedures, reviews QC and proficiency testing, and runs competency assessments for 11 staff. Led validation of two new chemistry analyzers and cut median emergency department potassium turnaround from 52 to 38 minutes.

  • Research lab

Research laboratory technician with four years in an academic immunology lab, running ELISA, qPCR and flow cytometry sample prep for three principal investigators. Maintains cell lines under BSL-2 practices, tracks samples in an electronic lab notebook and orders reagents within a grant budget. Now enrolled in an accredited MLT program to move into clinical testing.

  • Rural generalist

Generalist MLT in a 25-bed critical access hospital, covering every department alone on nights, including type and screens, crossmatches, microbiology setup and point-of-care oversight. Manages reagent inventory, sends specimens to the reference lab and handles the provider calls that come with a one-person shift.

Lab Technician resume objective examples

An objective fits when you have no direct experience in the role yet. Name the role, the proof you already have and what you will bring to the team.

  • MLT graduate

New graduate of an accredited MLT associate program with clinical rotations in hematology, chemistry, blood bank and microbiology. Sitting for the MLT(ASCP) exam in May and available for evening or night bench shifts in a hospital lab.

  • Processor moving up

Specimen processor with three years in a reference lab, now finishing an MLT program with a clinical practicum. Looking for an MLT trainee or entry role where my accessioning, LIS and send-out experience shortens training.

Common mistakes on a lab technician resume

  • Listing tests without departments or volume

Fix: "Ran CBCs" says little. Say which departments you rotate through, how many specimens you handle per shift, and which benches you cover alone at night. A supervisor staffing a core lab needs to know whether you can take hematology, chemistry and urinalysis on the same shift.

  • Saying nothing about quality control

Fix: QC is a large share of the job. Mention daily QC runs, Levey-Jennings review, Westgard rule violations you worked up, calibrations and proficiency testing such as CAP surveys. A line about a clean CAP or Joint Commission inspection tells a supervisor you document the way inspectors expect.

  • Mixing research and clinical language

Fix: Clinical labs want CLIA, LIS, turnaround and patient results. Research labs want protocols, assays, sample tracking and lab notebooks. If you have worked in both, keep two versions of your resume instead of one blended page, and name the lab type in each headline.

  • Forgetting safety and compliance basics

Fix: Note bloodborne pathogens training, chemical hygiene, the biosafety level you work at, chain of custody if you handled drug screens, and your part in competency assessments. These short lines answer questions a supervisor would otherwise have to ask, and they show you know how an inspected lab works.

What should a lab technician resume include?

A lab technician resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Lab Technician resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Processed and accessioned about 600 specimens per shift, applying rejection criteria that cut hemolyzed emergency department chemistry samples by a third.
  • Ran hematology, chemistry and urinalysis alone on nights for a 200-bed hospital, keeping STAT turnaround under 45 minutes.
  • Reviewed daily QC on 6 analyzers with Levey-Jennings charts and Westgard rules, documenting corrective action for every rejected run.
  • Performed manual differentials on 40 flagged CBCs a day and referred abnormal smears to the pathologist with morphology notes.
  • Called about 25 critical values a week to nurses and physicians within the 15-minute policy, with read-back recorded in the LIS.
  • Completed 3 CAP proficiency testing events a year with acceptable results on every chemistry and hematology analyte.
  • Helped validate a new chemistry analyzer by running 120 patient comparison samples and linearity studies before go-live.
  • Reduced mislabeled specimen rejections by 40% after training 30 nurses on collection labeling with the unit educator.

How to stand out as a lab technician applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Read the posting for benches and shift

Lab postings usually name the benches, the shift and the analyzers. Put those departments first in your summary, list the named instruments in your skills, and move evening or night work up if the job is off-hours. For research postings, swap clinical terms for the assays and techniques the lab lists. Tailor your resume to this lab posting

  • Use the letter to explain your bench coverage

Begin with the departments you can run alone and the shift you work now. Connect that to the lab you are applying to: a new analyzer line, a 24-hour core lab or a high-volume reference lab. If you are relocating or changing shifts, give the start date and say whether a state license application is in progress. Draft a lab technician cover letter

  • Prepare for technical and scenario questions

Expect questions such as what you do when QC fails, how you handle a hemolyzed potassium, or when you call a critical value. Some labs give a short written test on units, dilutions and reference ranges, or ask you to read a smear. Rehearse a calm, step-by-step answer for a QC failure on a busy shift. Practice lab interview questions

  • Make your credentials easy to verify

CLIA requires labs to keep proof of each tester's education, so expect requests for a diploma or transcript along with your certificate. Use the exact credential wording, the issuing body and the year, and keep that wording identical on every application. In licensure states, add the license type and status. Lab Technician resume questions

Is a lab technician the same as a medical laboratory technician?

In hospitals and reference labs, usually yes. The clinical title is medical laboratory technician, or MLT, and it normally calls for an associate degree and a certification exam. Research and industrial labs use "lab technician" for a different job: bench work for scientists, often with a biology or chemistry degree. Name the lab type in your headline.

Which states require a license for lab work?

A small group of states license clinical laboratory personnel, including California, Florida, New York and Tennessee, and technician rules differ from those for scientists. Other states rely on CLIA personnel rules and employer policy. If you hold a state license, list it beside your MLT(ASCP). If you are applying in a licensure state, give the date you applied.

Should I list every analyzer I have used?

List the ones the posting names and the ones you can run, maintain and troubleshoot without help. A short line per department works: hematology on Sysmex XN, chemistry on Roche cobas, urinalysis on an automated system. Leave out instruments you only watched during clinical rotations unless you are a new graduate.

How do I move from specimen processor to MLT?

Finish an accredited MLT program, usually an associate degree with a clinical practicum, and pass the certification exam. Keep the processor job on your resume, because it proves you know accessioning, centrifugation, rejection criteria and the LIS. Put the new credential and practicum rotations at the top so the reader sees the MLT first.
