Java Developer resume example

A Java posting usually names a JDK version, a framework and a runtime: Java 17 or 21, Spring Boot, Hibernate, Kafka, running on Kubernetes. Teams want to see which of those you have shipped to production and what changed after you did. Show it with latency, throughput, garbage collection pauses, defect counts or a legacy module you moved off Java 8.

Java Developer resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Computer science graduate who writes Java 21 and Spring Boot daily, with an internship building REST endpoints and JUnit 5 test suites for an insurance claims service. Comfortable with JPA, PostgreSQL, Maven and Docker, and holds the Oracle Certified Professional Java SE 17 credential. Looking for a backend Java team that reviews code closely and ships often.

  • Mid level

Java developer with five years on Spring Boot microservices for logistics and billing. Moved four services from Java 8 to 17, added Testcontainers integration tests, and cut p99 latency on the rating API from 480 ms to 140 ms. Works with Kafka, PostgreSQL and Redis on Kubernetes, and owns services in production, including the on-call rotation.

  • Senior

Senior Java engineer with eleven years building transaction-heavy JVM systems in payments and benefits administration. Led the split of a 900,000-line monolith into twelve Spring Boot services without a customer-facing outage, and set the team's standards for testing, GC tuning and API versioning. Mentors five developers and partners with product on technical roadmaps.

Common mistakes on a java developer resume

  • Writing "Java, J2EE" as if it were 2010

Fix: J2EE became Java EE and then Jakarta EE long ago, and many postings now ask for Spring Boot, Quarkus or Micronaut instead. Use current names, list the Java versions you have shipped, and if you still maintain EJB or JSF code, describe it as legacy work you supported or moved off, not as your main stack.

  • Listing Spring without saying which parts

Fix: Spring is a large family. Say which pieces you used: Spring Boot, Spring Data JPA, Spring Security with OAuth2, Spring Cloud Gateway, Spring Batch. A reviewer filling a payments role wants Security and transactions, while a data team wants Batch. Matching those names to the posting is more useful than one word.

  • Hiding how you test

Fix: Java teams care about test discipline because refactoring large codebases depends on it. Mention JUnit 5, Mockito, Testcontainers for real database tests, contract tests, and the coverage or flaky-test numbers you moved. A line like "raised branch coverage on the order module from 41% to 78% before splitting it" shows judgment, not just tooling.

  • Describing features instead of system behavior

Fix: "Developed REST endpoints" says little. Describe what the service does under load: requests per second, p99 latency, error rate, Kafka consumer lag, or batch run time. Add the database and caching choices behind those numbers. Teams hiring Java developers usually run long-lived backend systems, so they read for production behavior.

What should a java developer resume include?

A java developer resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Java 17, Java 21 and Virtual Threads. Start bullets with verbs like Migrated, Refactored and Profiled, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Oracle Certified Professional: Java SE 17 Developer, list it in its own section.

Java Developer resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Migrated 6 Spring Boot services from Java 8 to Java 17, removing 40 deprecated library versions and closing 23 open security findings.
  • Profiled a claims batch job with Java Flight Recorder and rewrote its JPA fetch plan, cutting nightly run time from 3 hours to 35 minutes.
  • Built a Kafka-based event pipeline that processes 12,000 shipment updates a second with consumer lag held under 2 seconds.
  • Refactored a 140,000-line billing module behind interfaces and Testcontainers tests, raising coverage from 38% to 81% before the split.
  • Decoupled the pricing engine from the order monolith into its own service, letting the team release pricing changes 4 times a week instead of monthly.
  • Tuned G1 heap regions and pause targets on the quote API, reducing p99 garbage collection pauses from 850 ms to 110 ms.
  • Hardened Spring Security configuration across 9 services with OAuth2 resource servers, removing every hard-coded service credential.
  • Replaced hand-written SQL in 30 repository classes with Spring Data JPA and Flyway migrations, cutting schema drift incidents to zero over a year.
  • Introduced virtual threads on an I/O-bound document service, handling 3x the concurrent requests on the same pod count.
  • Mentored 4 junior developers through code review and pairing; all four owned a production service within their first year.

How to stand out as a java developer applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the stack line to the posting

Java postings differ more than the job title suggests. One wants Spring Boot and Kafka on AWS, another wants Jakarta EE on WebLogic. Put the posting's framework and Java version in your headline and skills line, move the closest project to the top of each role, and drop tools that the team does not use. Optimize your resume for a Java posting

  • Use the cover letter for one system story

Pick the system closest to theirs and tell it in four sentences: what it did, the problem, what you changed in the code or JVM settings, and the measured result. A hiring manager for a trading or payments team wants to hear about latency and correctness. Close with the version and framework you would start in. Draft a Java developer cover letter

  • Prepare for core Java and design rounds

Expect questions on collections, equals and hashCode, concurrency with CompletableFuture or virtual threads, Spring bean scopes and transaction boundaries, plus a design round on a service like an order API. Practice explaining a production bug you fixed, how you found it and what test now stops it from coming back. Practice Java interview questions

  • Check which Java terms the posting repeats

Paste the posting next to your resume and look for gaps in specific names: Spring Batch, Hibernate, Kafka Streams, GraalVM, WebFlux. If the posting asks for a tool you have used, make sure the exact name appears in a bullet that shows the work. If you have not used it, leave it out and mention a close equivalent. Java Developer resume questions

Should I list the Java version I work in?

Yes. Version tells a team how current your habits are. Someone who has written records, sealed interfaces, switch pattern matching and virtual threads works differently from someone still on Java 8 streams. Write the versions you have used in production, such as "Java 8 to 17 migration, Java 21 on new services," and mention the language features you actually use day to day.

Is the Oracle Java certification worth putting on a resume?

It helps most early in a career or when you are moving into Java from another language, because it shows you studied the language rules in depth. Senior candidates are judged mostly on systems they built. If you hold the OCP for Java SE 17 or 21, list it with the year. If you hold an older version, list it but make your recent work carry the weight.

How do I describe work on an old monolith without sounding outdated?

Old code is where a lot of Java work happens, and teams know it. Describe what you improved: modules you split out, test coverage you added before refactoring, a Struts or EJB layer you replaced with Spring, or a build you moved from Ant to Gradle. Give the size of the codebase and the result, such as faster releases or fewer production incidents.

Should a Java developer list Kotlin or Scala too?

List them if you have written production code in them, since many JVM shops mix languages. Keep Java first if the posting is a Java role, and say where the other language fit, for example "Kotlin for new Spring Boot services, Java for the core billing engine." If you only tried Kotlin in a side project, put it under projects rather than core skills.

How do I show JVM tuning on a resume?

Name the problem, the tool and the measured result. For example: "Cut p99 GC pauses from 900 ms to 120 ms by moving from Parallel GC to G1 and resizing the heap after profiling with Java Flight Recorder." Mention async-profiler, JFR, heap dumps or JMH benchmarks if you used them. One specific tuning story is worth more than a line that says "performance optimization."
