Insurance Agent resume example

Agency owners hiring an insurance agent check licenses first: Property & Casualty, Life & Health or both, active in their state. Next they look for new premium written, policies per household, retention and the quoting systems you know. Say whether each job was at a captive or independent agency, and which lines you sold.

Insurance Agent resume objective examples

An objective fits when you have no direct experience in the role yet. Name the role, the proof you already have and what you will bring to the team.

  • Pre-licensed

Retail sales associate scheduled to sit for the state Property & Casualty exam next month after a 40-hour prelicensing course. Met monthly store credit sign-up goals for two years. Seeking a sales trainee role at an independent agency.

  • Claims to sales

Auto claims adjuster of four years moving into sales, with working knowledge of coverage forms, deductibles and how losses are actually paid. Holds a Property & Casualty license and wants to help clients buy the right coverage before a claim.

Common mistakes on an insurance agent resume

  • Listing licenses without lines or states

Fix: "Licensed insurance agent" is not enough. Name each line of authority, such as Property & Casualty or Life & Health, your resident state, any nonresident states and the status. If you also hold a securities registration for variable products, list it separately. Put all of it near the top of the page.

  • Reporting sales with no retention

Fix: New business is half the job. Agencies live on renewals, so show retention alongside new premium written. Add how you protect the book: annual reviews, remarketing accounts hit by rate increases and follow-up on late payments. A strong retention figure tells an owner your customers stay.

  • Calling cross-selling customer service

Fix: Account rounding drives agency income. Give policies per household before and after your work, the lines you added, such as umbrella, renters or life, and the review process you used. "Rounded 140 auto-only households with home or renters" says far more than "provided excellent service."

  • Hiding the systems you quote in

Fix: Agency owners want someone who can quote in week one. Name the agency management system, such as Applied Epic, AMS360 or HawkSoft, your comparative rater, such as EZLynx, and the carrier portals you bind in. For captive roles, describe the carrier's platform in plain terms.

What should an insurance agent resume include?

An insurance agent resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Property & Casualty License, Life & Health License and Nonresident Licenses. Start bullets with verbs like Quoted, Bound and Wrote, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Property & Casualty Producer License (state department of insurance), list it in its own section.

Insurance Agent resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Cut quote-to-bind time from three days to same day for standard risks by building templates and checklists in Applied Epic.

How to stand out as an insurance agent applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Mirror the lines and agency type

A commercial lines producer job, a captive personal lines role and a Medicare sales position look for different proof. Note the lines, the agency type and whether the job is mostly new sales or service, then reorder bullets so your matching experience comes first. Leave out lines you never sold. Tailor your resume to this agency's lines

  • Start the letter with the book you protect

Open with a concrete result from your current book, such as retention held through a hard market or households rounded with life coverage. Then tie it to the agency: the carriers it writes, the community it serves or the lines it wants to grow. End with your license status and start date. Write an insurance agent cover letter

  • Practice a mock sales call

Insurance interviews often include a role-play: a caller wants a cheaper auto quote, or a client is upset about a renewal increase. Practice asking coverage questions before talking price, recommending limits and asking for a referral. Expect questions on activity goals, licensing timelines and how you handle a claim complaint. Practice insurance agent interview questions

  • Put licenses where they are seen first

Agency owners screen by license, so place each line of authority, state and status right under your contact details, followed by designations. If a license is pending, give the exam date. Spell the line the way the posting does, since some states say Accident & Health where others say Life & Health. Check your insurance agent resume

Insurance Agent resume questions

Do I need a license before applying?

Not always. Many agencies hire customer service or sales trainees and pay for prelicensing and the exam, expecting you to pass within a set window. If you are not licensed yet, name the license you are pursuing and your exam date. If you are licensed, list each line of authority and state as active.

Captive or independent: does it change my resume?

Yes. Captive agents sell one carrier's products, so hiring managers look for sales activity, household counts and the carrier's own goals. Independent agencies want proof you can compare several carriers, remarket accounts at renewal and work in an agency management system such as Applied Epic or AMS360. Name the agency type for each job.

How do I show continuing education and designations?

Each state sets its own continuing education hours and ethics rules for keeping a producer license, so you do not need to list every course. Say your license is current. List designations you have earned, such as CIC, CISR, CPCU or LUTCF, with the issuer and year, plus any you are close to finishing.

Does call center insurance work count as experience?

Yes. Licensed call center sales and service roles are real insurance work. Give your license, calls or quotes handled per day, close rate, policies written and any quality or compliance scores. That tells an agency owner you can manage a book, even before you own one.
