High School Teacher resume example

A high school department chair screens for subject fit before anything else. Put your certification area and grade range up front, then the exact courses and levels you have taught: general, honors, AP, IB or dual enrollment. Show results by course, such as end-of-course pass rates or AP scores of 3 and above, and include the coaching, clubs or advising you take on outside the bell schedule.

High School Teacher resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Certified chemistry teacher for grades 7-12 with a semester of student teaching in honors and general chemistry at a suburban high school. Taught four sections of 26 to 30 students, ran weekly labs under the school's chemical hygiene plan and assisted with the science olympiad team. Ready to take on physical science or chemistry sections and a club.

  • Mid level

High school chemistry teacher with eight years of honors, general and AP Chemistry, teaching five sections a year. Raised the share of AP students scoring 3 or higher from 44 to 68 percent over three cohorts while opening the course to more juniors. Sponsors the science olympiad team, writes about 35 recommendation letters each fall and keeps a spotless lab safety record.

  • Senior

Science department chair and chemistry teacher with eighteen years in two public high schools and National Board Certification in Adolescence and Young Adulthood Science. Leads a department of 11, built a dual enrollment chemistry course with a local college and redesigned the ninth-grade physical science sequence. Mentors new teachers and runs the school's lab safety training each August.

Common mistakes on a high school teacher resume

  • Writing "taught chemistry" with no levels or sections

Fix: Chairs build schedules from your resume, so give them the parts: course names, levels, sections per year and class size. "Five sections: three honors chemistry, two AP Chemistry, 28 to 32 students" lets them see you fitting into next fall right away. A single subject word does not.

  • Skipping lab, shop or studio safety

Fix: If your room has chemicals, tools, kilns or a stage, safety is part of the job. Note your chemical hygiene plan work, SDS binders, eyewash and fume hood checks, or shop safety tests for students. A clean record over several years, such as "zero lab injuries in six years," is worth one short bullet.

  • Leaving out the duties beyond the bell schedule

Fix: High school teachers run advisories, write recommendation letters, sponsor clubs, coach and supervise events. These tell a principal you will carry part of the school, not only your classes. Add the two or three that matter most, with a number, such as 40 recommendation letters a year or a club of 25 students.

  • Ignoring students who are behind in credits

Fix: Postings often mention credit recovery, ninth-grade transition or intervention periods. If you ran a credit recovery section, taught a support class or tracked students at risk of failing, say how many students you worked with and how many recovered the credit or passed the next semester.

What should a high school teacher resume include?

A high school teacher resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as General chemistry, Honors chemistry and AP Chemistry. Start bullets with verbs like Taught, Authored and Coached, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as State secondary teaching certificate in your subject (grades 7-12 or 9-12, varies by state), list it in its own section.

High School Teacher resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Coached the science olympiad team of 22 students to its first state tournament appearance in a decade.
  • Ran a credit recovery chemistry section for 16 seniors, 14 of whom recovered the credit and graduated on time.
  • Calibrated scoring on department finals with 3 colleagues, narrowing the grade gap between sections from 9 to 3 points.
  • Kept a zero-injury lab record over 6 years by teaching safety contracts and running a monthly fume hood and eyewash check.
  • Advised a homeroom of 24 students across four years, with all 24 completing a college or career plan before graduation.
  • Wrote about 35 college recommendation letters each fall and met every deadline set by the counseling office.
  • Co-designed a 9th-grade physical science course that cut first-semester failure rates from 21 to 12 percent.

How to stand out as a high school teacher applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Put the posting's course list at the top

High school postings name the subject and often the levels, such as "Chemistry and AP Chemistry" or "English 10 and journalism." Copy those course names into your headline and summary when you have taught them, move that school first, and drop unrelated electives lower. If the posting adds a coaching need, mention your matching sport or club near the top. Optimize your resume for a teaching posting

  • Write the cover letter to the department

Address the principal but write as if the department chair will read it closely, because they usually do. Name the courses you would take on, one course result with numbers and how you work with colleagues on shared assessments. Close with the activity or team you would sponsor, since that is often the tiebreaker between finalists. Draft a high school teacher cover letter

  • Prepare a sample lesson in your subject

Panels often ask for a short sample lesson or a walk through one unit. Pick a concept students find hard, plan a hook, a check for understanding and an exit ticket, and bring a printed copy. Expect questions on phones in class, late work, reassessment, grading fairness and what you do when half the class fails a test. Practice high school teacher interview questions

  • Check your subject terms against the posting

Districts write postings in their own language: "credit recovery," "PLC," "standards-based grading," "dual credit." Run the posting and your resume through a keyword matcher to see which terms you are missing, then add only the ones that describe work you have done. A missing term you can honestly claim is an easy fix. Compare your resume to the posting

High School Teacher resume questions

Should I list each course and level I have taught?

Yes, briefly. A course line under each school, such as "Chemistry (general and honors), AP Chemistry, Physical Science 9," tells the chair exactly which sections you can pick up next year. Add the number of sections and the typical class size. If the posting is for a course you taught only once, still list it and add the year so the panel knows how recent it is.

How do I show results when my subject has no state test?

Many high school subjects are not tested at the state level, so use what your course does measure. That can be pass rates on a department final, growth on a pre-test and post-test, AP scores of 3 or higher, lab practical results or dual enrollment credit rates. Name the measure and the group size so the number reads as fair, not cherry-picked.

Do coaching and club sponsorship belong on a teacher resume?

They do, and at the high school level they often help you get hired. Schools need adults to run teams, clubs, the yearbook and the robotics competition. Give each one a line with the season or years, the number of students and one outcome, such as a regional placement or a club that doubled in size. Keep them below your classroom roles.

How do I list AP, IB or dual enrollment teaching?

Put the course name in the job line and add what it took. AP teachers usually submit a syllabus through the College Board AP Course Audit, IB teachers attend IB training, and dual enrollment often requires a master's degree or graduate credits in the subject set by the partner college. Mention the training you completed and give a scores or credit result.

I am moving into teaching from a science or industry job. What do I lead with?

Lead with your subject depth and your route to certification. Many states offer alternative or intern certification for people with a degree in the subject, but the rules and names vary, so state where you are in the process. Then show teaching-like work: training new hires, tutoring, lab instruction or coaching youth. Put the industry role below, framed around the content you would teach.
