Dental Assistant resume example

An office manager filling a chair needs to know what you are allowed to do in their state and how fast you can turn a room. Lead with your DANB certification or state credential, your radiography clearance and any expanded functions you are permitted to perform. Then show chairside speed, the procedures you assist on and how you keep sterilization logs clean.

Dental Assistant resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Dental assisting graduate with 300 clinical hours in a general practice and a community clinic. Passed the DANB Radiation Health and Safety and Infection Control exams and takes full-mouth and bitewing radiographs under state rules. Sets up trays, runs the autoclave and spore tests, and passes instruments in four-handed dentistry. Calm with children and anxious patients.

  • Mid level

Certified dental assistant with five years in a busy family practice, assisting on 12 to 16 restorative, crown and endodontic procedures a day. Takes digital radiographs and intraoral scans, fabricates temporary crowns and runs sterilization for a 5-chair office. Also covers the front desk for scheduling and insurance estimates when the office is short-staffed.

  • Senior

Lead dental assistant with eleven years across general, pediatric and oral surgery offices. Trains new assistants, writes the sterilization and inventory procedures and runs monthly OSHA and infection control checks for a 9-chair group practice. Holds the DANB CDA and a state expanded-function permit. Cut supply costs by 18% by consolidating vendors and tracking usage by operatory.

Common mistakes on a dental assistant resume

  • Leaving out your state credential

Fix: What you can legally do in the chair depends on your state, so a dentist checks this first. List the title exactly as your board issues it, the state and the year, along with any radiography or expanded-function permits. If you hold a DANB credential as well, list it next to the state one so both are visible at a glance.

  • Writing "assisted the dentist" in every bullet

Fix: Say which procedures you assisted on and how many. Crown preps, extractions, root canals, implant placement and pediatric visits each show a different level of skill. A bullet like "Assisted on 12 to 15 restorative and crown procedures a day in a 4-chair practice" tells a manager you can keep pace with a full schedule.

  • Skipping infection control

Fix: Sterilization is a daily duty and an inspection risk. Describe how you process instruments, run and log autoclave cycles, do weekly spore tests and keep waterlines clean. If your office passed an inspection or OSHA review while you ran sterilization, mention it. It shows the habits that protect patients and the practice license.

  • Ignoring the front-office side

Fix: In a small office, the assistant often fills gaps at the front desk too. If you schedule patients, confirm appointments, enter treatment plans, explain insurance estimates or handle recalls, add it. Name the practice software you used. Being able to fill in at the desk is a real advantage in an office with three or four staff.

What should a dental assistant resume include?

A dental assistant resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Four-Handed Dentistry, Restorative Procedures and Crown & Bridge. Start bullets with verbs like Assisted, Exposed and Sterilized, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), list it in its own section.

How to stand out as a dental assistant applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Tailor to the specialty and the state

A general practice, a pediatric office and an oral surgery practice each ask for different skills. Read the posting for procedures, software and required credentials. Move your matching experience up and copy the posting's terms where they fit your real work. If you are licensed in another state, say which functions you are qualified for here. Tailor your dental assistant resume

  • Use the cover letter to show you fit the office

Dental offices are small teams, so personality matters. Open with your credential and the procedures you know, then mention how you help patients feel at ease. Say which days you can work, especially Saturdays or early mornings. If you can cover the front desk, add it in one line. Keep the letter short and warm. Write a dental assistant cover letter

  • Prepare for a working interview

Some dental offices ask candidates to work a half day or full day in the clinic. Expect to set up trays, take radiographs if allowed and assist on a few procedures. Review the office's software and procedure mix before you go, bring your own loupes if you use them, and ask how they run sterilization. Practice dental assistant interview questions

  • Write a summary that names your credential and chairs

Your summary should say, in two or three lines, your credential, years in the chair, the procedures you know best and the size of office you work in. A summary generator can draft a starting version from your details. Edit it so every procedure and number matches your real experience and your state's rules. Draft a dental assistant summary

Dental Assistant resume questions

Do I need a certification to be a dental assistant?

It depends on the state. Some states let assistants train on the job for basic duties, while others require registration, a license or a DANB exam before you take X-rays or perform expanded functions. Titles also differ, such as RDA, LDA or EFDA. Check your state dental board, then list the exact title and state on your resume.

What is the DANB CDA, and what does it cover?

The Certified Dental Assistant credential from the Dental Assisting National Board is made up of three exams: Radiation Health and Safety, Infection Control and General Chairside Assisting. You can list a component you have passed, such as RHS, before you finish the full CDA. Some states accept DANB exams toward their own requirements, so note any that apply.

How do I list expanded functions on my resume?

Name each function and the state that permits you to do it. Coronal polishing, sealants, fluoride, temporary crowns and placing restorations are all regulated differently by state. Write something like "EFDA, Ohio: placing and finishing amalgam and composite restorations." If you move states, check which functions carry over before you list them for a new employer.

I am switching from a general practice to an oral surgery or ortho office. What changes?

Show the skills that carry over and the ones you are ready to learn. Oral surgery offices care about monitoring vitals, surgical setups and sterile field. Orthodontic offices care about bonding brackets, changing wires and patient flow across many chairs. Move any related experience up, and mention short courses or a DANB COA if you are going into ortho.
