Compliance Analyst resume example

Banks and fintechs hiring compliance analysts want to know which rules you have worked under and what you did with them. Name the program, whether BSA/AML, sanctions, consumer compliance or regulatory change, then show volume and judgment: alerts cleared, cases escalated, testing completed and exam findings closed. A CAMS or CRCM belongs beside your name.

Common mistakes on a compliance analyst resume

  • Listing regulations as a word cloud

Fix: A row of acronyms such as BSA, OFAC, Reg E, UDAAP and HMDA proves nothing on its own. Tie each one you list to work: alerts reviewed under the BSA program, Reg E dispute files tested, HMDA data scrubbed before submission. If you cannot write a bullet for a rule, move it to your skills section or drop it.

  • Reporting alert counts without quality

Fix: Volume alone suggests a queue clearer. Pair counts with quality: QA pass rate on your dispositions, the share escalated to investigation, backlog reduced and false positives cut through rule tuning. "Reviewed 1,100 alerts a month with a 98% QA pass rate" shows a compliance manager both pace and judgment.

  • Leaving out what you fixed

Fix: Compliance teams are measured on issues found and closed. Add the remediation you drove: policies rewritten, procedures updated for a rule change, training delivered to front-line staff, monitoring rules tuned and exam or audit findings closed on time. One line about a gap you found through your own testing is especially strong.

  • Revealing too much on the page

Fix: Never include customer names, case details, SAR specifics or exam ratings, even disguised. Hiring managers notice and see it as a judgment problem. Use aggregate counts, general typologies and outcomes such as findings closed. If you worked on a public enforcement action, refer only to what is in the public record.

What should a compliance analyst resume include?

A compliance analyst resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as BSA/AML, USA PATRIOT Act and FinCEN CDD Rule. Start bullets with verbs like Investigated, Escalated and Tested, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), ACAMS, list it in its own section.

How to stand out as a compliance analyst applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the program the posting describes

"Compliance analyst" can mean an AML alert reviewer, a sanctions analyst, a consumer compliance tester or a policy and regulatory change specialist. Read the duties, then lead with your matching work and the rules it involved. Move unrelated programs lower, and keep the posting's own system names when you have used them. Tailor your compliance resume to the posting

  • Show judgment in the cover letter

Compliance managers hire for careful judgment and clear writing. Use the cover letter to describe, in general terms, how you approach a hard call, such as a customer whose activity changed or a rule open to interpretation. Name your certification, the programs you know and the systems you use. Keep every detail confidential. Draft a compliance analyst cover letter

  • Practice red flag and scenario questions

Expect scenarios: a customer making repeated cash deposits just below the reporting threshold, a partial sanctions name match, or a business line that disagrees with your finding. Explain your steps, what you document and when you escalate. Know the basic SAR and CTR rules and the parts of a BSA/AML program. Practice compliance interview questions

  • Write a summary that names your program

A strong compliance summary says which program you work in, the institution type and size band, your certification and one measure of quality or impact. Avoid general phrases about integrity. If you are moving between AML and consumer compliance, say so plainly and point to the training or work that bridges them. Write your compliance summary

Compliance Analyst resume questions

How do I describe SAR work without breaking confidentiality?

Federal law bars disclosing a Suspicious Activity Report or anything that would reveal one was filed, so never describe a specific case, customer or filing. Aggregate volumes are the safe way to show the work: "investigated 40 escalated alerts a month and drafted SAR narratives for the cases that met the filing threshold." Describe typologies in general terms, such as structuring or elder financial exploitation.

CAMS or CRCM: which certification fits my path?

The CAMS from ACAMS centers on anti-money laundering and financial crime, so it suits BSA/AML, sanctions and fraud roles at banks, fintechs and money services businesses. The CRCM from the American Bankers Association covers consumer banking regulations such as Reg E, Reg Z and fair lending. Both have eligibility requirements, so check each body's current rules before you plan your study.

Can I move into compliance from a branch, fraud or audit job?

Yes, and many analysts start that way. From a branch, stress CTR filing, customer identification and the unusual activity referrals you made. From fraud, stress investigations and case notes. From audit, stress testing, workpapers and findings. Then add AML or regulatory training you have completed. A specific bullet about spotting and escalating something beats a general interest statement.

Is a compliance analyst resume different outside banking?

The structure is the same: policies, monitoring, testing, investigations, training and reporting. The rules change. Healthcare compliance centers on HIPAA, billing and anti-kickback rules; broker-dealers on FINRA and SEC requirements; corporate ethics programs on codes of conduct, hotlines and anti-bribery laws. Name the rules from your target industry that you have actually worked under, and keep the rest short.

Should I name the regulators I worked with?

Yes, at a general level. Saying you supported OCC, FDIC, Federal Reserve, CFPB or state banking examinations, answered a given number of requests and closed a given number of findings is useful. Exam ratings and the contents of examination reports are confidential supervisory information, so leave them out. Say what you fixed, not what the examiner concluded.
