Chemist resume example

A lab manager hiring a chemist scans for instruments, methods and the regulated setting first. Name the techniques you run without help (HPLC, GC-MS, ICP-MS, FTIR, NMR), say whether you develop and validate methods or run established ones, and state the framework you work under, such as GMP, GLP or ISO 17025. Add sample volumes and investigation results.

Summary

Analytical chemist with nine years in Research Triangle pharmaceutical labs, developing and validating HPLC, UPLC and GC methods for oral solid products. Leads OOS investigations, writes validation and transfer protocols, and identifies unknown impurities by LC-MS. Recent work shortened a related substances method by two thirds and passed a pre-approval inspection with no method findings.

Work Experience

Neuse Point Pharma Services · Durham, NC

  • Developed a UPLC related substances method that runs in 18 minutes instead of 55, with better resolution of the critical pair.
  • Validated 12 methods for a new tablet product; the pre-approval inspection raised no method findings.
  • Identified a 0.12% degradant by LC-MS and forced degradation data, supporting a switch to foil blister packaging.

Analytical Chemist

Feb 2018 – Mar 2021

Crabtree Valley Laboratories · Morrisville, NC

  • Set a preventive maintenance schedule for 8 HPLC systems that cut downtime 40%.

QC Chemist (Contract)

Jan 2017 – Jan 2018

Chemist resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Chemistry graduate with an ACS-certified degree and a year of contract QC work in a pharmaceutical lab. Runs HPLC assays and dissolution testing in Empower under cGMP, records data to ALCOA+ standards and supports system suitability troubleshooting. Undergraduate research in organic synthesis included NMR and FTIR characterization. Looking for a QC or analytical chemist role.

  • Mid level

Analytical chemist with six years in cGMP pharmaceutical labs, developing and validating HPLC and GC methods for small molecule APIs and finished products. Writes validation protocols to ICH Q2, leads OOS investigations and transfers methods to contract labs. Recent work cut a related substances run from 55 minutes to 18 and closed every assigned investigation inside its target window.

  • Senior

Principal analytical chemist with fourteen years in drug development and commercial QC, leading a team of six chemists. Owns method lifecycle from development to post-approval changes, writes analytical sections for regulatory submissions and hosts FDA and client audits for the lab. Introduced LC-MS impurity identification in house, cutting outsourced testing turnaround from three weeks to four days.

Common mistakes on a chemist resume

  • Listing techniques with no sample type or setting

Fix: "HPLC, GC, FTIR" fits every chemist. Pair each with what you analyzed and why: assay and impurities in tablets, residual solvents in an API, trace metals in drinking water, polymer identification for failure analysis. The sample type tells a lab manager whether your experience fits their bench.

  • Hiding investigation and documentation work

Fix: Regulated labs spend real time on OOS investigations, deviations, CAPAs and data review. Show how many you led, the typical root causes you found and how fast you closed them. A line like "led 18 OOS investigations, closed all within the 30-day target" signals you understand how a GMP lab actually runs.

  • Writing as a lab technician

Fix: A chemist is expected to interpret data, design experiments and improve methods, not only run samples. Make sure at least one bullet per role shows a decision: a method you changed, a contaminant you identified, a specification you proposed. Keep sample throughput, but do not let it be the whole story.

  • Ignoring safety and chemical handling

Fix: Chemists work with hazardous reagents, solvents and sometimes controlled substances. Mention your chemical hygiene plan duties, waste handling, DEA-registered work if it applies and any safety committee role. It shows maturity in a lab and matters for roles that include training junior staff.

What should a chemist resume include?

A chemist resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as HPLC/UPLC, Gas Chromatography (GC-FID) and GC-MS. Start bullets with verbs like Developed, Validated and Analyzed, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as ACS-certified bachelor's degree (from an ACS-approved chemistry program), list it in its own section.

How to stand out as a chemist applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the lab's techniques and framework

Pharma QC, contract testing, environmental labs and materials R&D use different instruments and rules. Read the posting for the techniques and the framework, such as cGMP or ISO 17025, and put your matching bench work first. Use the same instrument and software names as the posting when they are the ones you actually run. Tailor your chemist resume to a lab

  • Use the cover letter to explain your bench fit

Open with the work closest to theirs: the product type, the techniques and one result, such as a method you shortened or an investigation you closed. If you are moving from academia or another industry, name the transferable habits plainly and say which regulated practices you are ready to learn on the job. Draft a chemist cover letter

  • Prepare for troubleshooting questions

Lab interviews often hand you a chromatogram or a scenario: peak tailing, a failed system suitability or an unexpected result. Practice explaining how you would check the column, mobile phase, sample prep and instrument in order. Have a real OOS story ready that shows how you found the root cause and documented it. Practice chemist interview questions

  • Keep it apart from a lab technician page

If you have worked as a technician, your chemist resume should show more interpretation and design, not only sample counts. Compare your bullets with the lab technician example: anything that reads like routine testing should either show a decision you made or move lower on the page. Chemist resume questions

Is there a license or certification every chemist needs?

No. Most chemistry jobs in the US do not require a license. The American Chemical Society approves bachelor's programs, and graduates who meet its requirements earn an ACS-certified degree, which is worth listing if you have one. Beyond that, credentials depend on the job, such as GMP training for pharma or chemical hygiene certification for safety roles.

How do I show GMP experience if I worked in an academic lab?

Do not claim GMP if you did not work under it. Show the habits that transfer: bound notebooks with signed entries, instrument logbooks, calibration checks, written procedures you followed and peer review of data. Name any formal GMP or GLP training you took. Then say you are ready for a regulated lab, which hiring managers accept from new graduates.

Should I list every instrument I have touched?

List the ones you run independently and can troubleshoot, ideally with the brand and software, such as Agilent GC-MS with MassHunter. Put occasional or trained-on instruments in a separate line marked as familiarity. Interviewers often ask how you would fix a drifting baseline or a failed system suitability, so only list what you can discuss.

How do I move from QC testing to R&D or method development?

Pull forward the parts of QC work that look like development: method transfers, troubleshooting a method that kept failing, robustness checks or a validation you helped write. Give each its own bullet with the technique and outcome. If you have published or presented, add it. A short projects section can hold development work done outside your formal duties.
