Civil Engineer resume example

Civil engineering managers read for license status first, then for the kind of work: site development, transportation, stormwater or structural. Show the projects you designed, the plan sets you produced and the agencies that approved them, and put your EIT or PE designation right after your name.

Civil Engineer resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

EIT and civil engineering graduate with a year of site development design at a consulting firm. Produces Civil 3D grading, utility and erosion control sheets, runs HydroCAD models for detention ponds and prepares quantity estimates. Passed the FE Civil exam in 2025 and spent two summers inspecting road work for a county engineer's office.

  • Mid level

Licensed PE with seven years in transportation design, delivering roadway widening and intersection projects for state DOT and city clients. Leads plan production in OpenRoads, writes design reports and handles right-of-way and utility coordination. Managed design for 11 miles of arterial improvements and 9 signalized intersections, all let to construction on the planned date.

  • Senior

Principal civil engineer, licensed as a PE in three states, with 17 years in water resources and municipal infrastructure. Manages 12 engineers and designers, owns relationships with six municipal clients and leads stormwater master plans and floodplain studies. Oversees $4.2M in annual design fees and has taken grant-funded culvert projects through federal and state review.

  • Geotechnical

Geotechnical engineer and EIT with four years of subsurface investigations for commercial buildings and highway embankments. Plans boring programs, logs samples in the field, runs settlement and slope stability analyses and writes foundation recommendation reports. Coordinates footing and pile design with structural engineers and supervises the soils lab technicians.

Civil Engineer resume objective examples

An objective fits when you have no direct experience in the role yet. Name the role, the proof you already have and what you will bring to the team.

  • Graduate

Civil engineering graduate from an ABET-accredited program who passed the FE Civil exam in May. Senior design covered grading, storm sewer and detention for a 12-acre site in Civil 3D. Seeking an EIT role in land development.

  • Military veteran

Former Navy Seabee construction electrician with six years on airfield and utility projects, now finishing a civil engineering degree. Reads plans, works with inspectors and wants a co-op or construction inspection role with a consulting firm.

Common mistakes on a civil engineer resume

  • Writing "assisted with design" for everything

Fix: Engineers in training often hide their own work under the senior engineer's. Say what you designed and produced: the storm sewer layout, the pavement section, the grading sheets, the hydraulic model. A PE sealing the drawings is normal; your bullet can still name the calculations and sheets that were yours.

  • Ignoring the sub-field in the posting

Fix: A water resources firm and a transportation group screen for different skills. For stormwater, name the models and the ordinance you designed to. For roadway, mention MUTCD, AASHTO guidance and state DOT standards. For site work, cover grading, utilities and site plan approvals. Rewrite the summary for each sub-field instead of listing all of them.

  • Leaving out agencies and approvals

Fix: Much of civil engineering is getting a design approved. Mention the reviewing bodies you worked with, such as a city engineering department, a county stormwater authority, the state DOT or the Army Corps of Engineers, and the permits you obtained.

  • Skipping construction-phase work

Fix: Many civil roles include shop drawing reviews, RFI responses, field observation and pay quantity checks. If you have done any of this, add it. It shows you understand how plans get built and tells a manager you can carry a project past bid opening.

What should a civil engineer resume include?

A civil engineer resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, OpenRoads Designer and MicroStation. Start bullets with verbs like Designed, Modeled and Permitted, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Engineer Intern / Engineer in Training (EI/EIT), after passing the NCEES FE Civil exam, list it in its own section.

Civil Engineer resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Designed grading and storm sewer plans for a 42-acre industrial park, meeting county detention rules with two shared basins instead of four.
  • Built HEC-RAS models for 3.5 miles of creek to support a floodplain map revision accepted by FEMA.
  • Produced 120 plan sheets in OpenRoads for a state DOT widening project, clearing the 90% review with minor comments only.
  • Proposed a roundabout alternative for a rural intersection that saved $600K compared with full signal reconstruction.
  • Prepared SWPPPs and NPDES permit applications for 14 site development projects, all approved on first submission.
  • Designed 1,800 linear feet of cantilever retaining wall under AASHTO LRFD, working from the geotechnical engineer's recommendations.
  • Wrote engineer's estimates for 9 municipal bid packages, each landing within 8% of the low bid.
  • Reviewed 75 shop drawings and answered 140 RFIs during construction of a $16M wastewater pump station.

How to stand out as a civil engineer applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Mirror the project types in the posting

A county engineer's opening, a land development consultant and a DOT design group each want different projects up front. Pull the two or three closest to the posting to the top of each role, use the posting's names for deliverables and software, and move unrelated work lower. Tailor your resume to this firm's project mix

  • Start the letter with a built project

Open with a project that got built and resembles the employer's work: what it was, your design role and the agency that approved it. Then refer to one of the employer's projects or service areas and explain how your experience fits. State your EIT or PE status and your next licensure step. Write a civil engineer cover letter

  • Prepare to walk through a plan sheet

Civil engineering interviews often include technical questions on drainage, pavement or grading, and some firms ask you to explain a sheet you produced or mark up an example. Bring a sanitized sample if your employer allows it. Rehearse how you handled a tough review comment, a late design change and a conflict found in the field. Practice civil engineering interview questions

  • Keep license details current

If you hold PE licenses in more than one state, list each with its year and update the list when you add one by comity. Mention an NCEES Record if you maintain one, since it can speed up licensure in other states. Then check the resume against the posting. Check your civil engineering resume

Civil Engineer resume questions

How should I show EIT or PE status on a civil engineering resume?

Put it after your name in the header, as in "Your Name, PE," and repeat it in a licenses section with each state and year. If you passed the FE but are not yet licensed, write EIT or EI, whichever term your state board uses. If you passed the PE exam and are waiting on board approval, say exactly that.

How long does it take to get a PE license?

Most state boards ask for a degree from an ABET-accredited program, a passing FE exam, about four years of qualifying experience under a licensed engineer, and a passing PE exam. Details vary, so check your state board. Log your supervised experience and supervisors as you go, so the application is ready when you are eligible.

Should I include a project list on my resume?

Yes. For civil work, projects often say more than job titles. Under each employer, list two to four projects with the client type, size, your design role and the agencies involved, such as a county engineer or state DOT. Leave out private client names if your firm asks.

Do I need to list Civil 3D or OpenRoads versions?

Name the software, not the version, unless a posting asks. State DOT transportation work often runs on Bentley OpenRoads or MicroStation, while land development firms mostly use Civil 3D. If you have used both, say which projects used which, since many groups hire for one platform and the CAD standards that come with it.
