Carpenter resume example

Carpentry covers framing, concrete formwork, finish trim, cabinets and commercial interiors, and a foreman wants to know which of those you do best. Name your specialty and journey-level status in the first line. Then prove it with project types, square footage or units framed, tolerances held, the tools and layout methods you use, and your safety record on site.

Carpenter resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Third-year carpentry apprentice with 4,200 hours on wood-framed apartments and commercial tenant improvements. Frames walls from layout, sets door frames, hangs blocking for cabinets and builds stair forms under a journeyman. OSHA 10 trained with fall protection and powder-actuated tool cards, has my own hand tools and a truck, and is ready for a crew that builds every day.

  • Mid level

Journey-level carpenter with nine years in commercial interiors: metal stud framing, drywall ceilings, doors and hardware, and millwork installation in offices and clinics. Lays out floors from control lines with a robotic total station and keeps walls plumb within 1/8 inch. Ran a 4-person crew on a 60,000 square foot medical office fit-out that turned over with a short punch list.

  • Senior

Carpenter foreman with eighteen years on multifamily and mixed-use projects, from concrete forms and podium decks to finish trim. Plans the carpentry sequence with the superintendent, orders material, and runs crews of up to 14 carpenters and apprentices. Delivered 420 units framed on schedule over three buildings with no lost-time injuries and an average punch list under 6 items per unit.

Common mistakes on a carpenter resume

  • Calling yourself a carpenter with no specialty

Fix: A framing contractor, a concrete sub and a millwork shop all hire carpenters, and they want different people. Put your main type of work in the headline, such as "commercial interiors carpenter" or "residential framer and lead," and order the bullets to match. List side skills lower, so the first screen sees the fit.

  • Skipping layout and print reading

Fix: Being able to lay out a floor from the plans is what moves a carpenter from helper to lead. Say whether you snap lines from control points, run a laser or transit, read architectural and structural sheets and catch conflicts before you build. One bullet about a layout error you caught early is worth more than a list of tools.

  • No measure of output or quality

Fix: Give rough numbers that show pace and accuracy: units or square feet framed, linear feet of trim, doors hung in a week, punch items per unit at turnover. Keep them honest and tied to a project. A tolerance such as "walls within 1/8 inch over 10 feet" tells a superintendent you build it right the first time.

  • Leaving off safety and equipment

Fix: Carpenters work at height, around openings and near powder-actuated tools, so supervisors check this. List OSHA 10 or 30, fall protection and scaffold training, powder-actuated tool cards, forklift or aerial lift training and your recordable-free years. If you served as a crew safety contact, include it.

What should a carpenter resume include?

A carpenter resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Wall & Floor Framing, Roof Trusses & Rafters and Shear Walls & Hold-Downs. Start bullets with verbs like Framed, Formed and Laid Out, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Journey-Level Carpenter (registered apprenticeship completion), list it in its own section.

Carpenter resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Framed 140 wood-framed apartment units across two buildings with a 6-person crew, finishing the framing phase 9 working days ahead of schedule.
  • Laid out 3 floors of a medical office from control lines with a robotic total station, catching 2 plan conflicts before walls went up.
  • Built and stripped gang forms for 1,800 linear feet of foundation walls, reusing each panel set an average of 11 times.
  • Hung and hardwared 260 commercial doors on a school renovation with every opening passing the fire door inspection on the first walk.
  • Installed 900 linear feet of custom cabinetry and countertops in a residential tower, closing out with fewer than 3 punch items per unit.
  • Trimmed out 45 custom homes with paint-grade and stain-grade casing, baseboard and crown, scribing to uneven walls without visible gaps.
  • Cut framing material waste 15% by building a cut list from the plans and staging lumber by floor before each pour cycle.
  • Trained 7 first-year apprentices on layout, safe saw use and nailing schedules, all of whom advanced to the next apprenticeship level on time.
  • Framed shear walls and installed 1,100 hold-downs to the structural plans, passing every framing inspection without a correction notice.
  • Served as crew safety lead for 3 years on a 12-person crew with zero recordable injuries and weekly toolbox talks documented.

How to stand out as a carpenter applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Lead with the work type the posting names

Carpentry postings usually name the trade scope plainly: framing, formwork, interiors or finish. Move your matching jobs and bullets to the top, use the same words, and add the project types they build, such as multifamily, schools or retail. If they ask for a specific tool, like a total station, say exactly how you have used it. Tailor your carpentry resume to the job

  • Keep the cover letter short and practical

A superintendent wants a few lines: your specialty, your best recent project, whether you have your own tools and transportation, and when you can start. Add travel availability and shift flexibility if the job is out of town. A short, clear note with a phone number often works better than a long letter. Write a short carpenter cover letter

  • Get ready for questions about layout and math

Expect questions on reading a plan sheet, finding square with the 3-4-5 method, calculating stair rise and run, and nailing schedules for shear walls. Some contractors run a short practical test or a ride-along day. Be ready to talk about a mistake you caught before it was built, and how you handled a crew member working unsafely. Practice carpenter interview questions

  • Turn daily tasks into measurable bullets

Most carpenters undersell themselves with lines like "framed walls" or "installed trim." Take each project and write down what you built, how much, how fast and how well it passed inspection or punch. A bullet generator can help you shape the wording, but the numbers need to come from your own jobs. Write stronger carpentry bullets

Carpenter resume questions

Should I split rough and finish carpentry on my resume?

Yes, if you have done both. Contractors hire framers and finish carpenters for different stages, so give each type of work its own bullets or its own job entry. Rough work is about speed, layout and plumb walls. Finish work is about tight joints, scribing, hardware and protecting surfaces. Lead with the one the posting asks for.

How do I show an apprenticeship that I completed?

List it under education or certifications with the sponsor, the length and the completion year, such as a four-year registered apprenticeship through a joint union-contractor training center or an open-shop program. Note the related classroom hours if you know them. Completion usually brings journey-level status, which is the line most employers look for first.

Do I need the EPA lead-safe certification?

If you work on homes, child care facilities or schools built before 1978, the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires a certified renovator on jobs that disturb painted surfaces. Some states run their own program in place of the federal one. It matters for remodeling and window or door replacement work, less for new construction.

How do I describe custom or one-off work without photos?

Describe the piece in plain terms: what it was, the material, the size and the tolerance. "Built and scribed a 16-foot walnut built-in to an out-of-plumb plaster wall" says more than "custom woodwork." Then offer a small photo portfolio at the interview, on your phone or as a link if the application allows it.
