Bank Teller resume example

Branch managers hire tellers they can trust with a cash drawer and a line of customers. Your resume should show how many transactions you handle in a shift, how your drawer balances, the fraud or counterfeit you have caught, and how many customers you referred to bankers for new accounts.

Bank Teller resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Customer-facing cashier with two years at a busy grocery store, closing out a register that took $4,000 to $6,000 a shift with no unresolved shortages. Trained on counterfeit checks and gift card scam warning signs, and comfortable explaining policies to frustrated customers. Applying for a teller position with Saturday availability and a goal of becoming a personal banker.

  • Mid level

Bank teller with four years at a community bank, handling about 110 transactions a day across deposits, cashier's checks, loan payments and commercial deposits. Balanced a $20,000 drawer with three minor differences in the last year. Referred 18 customers a month to personal bankers, and two of the counterfeit notes I caught led to a branch-wide training refresher.

  • Senior

Head teller supervising six tellers at a high-volume branch with a drive-up lane and a cash recycler. Manages the vault under dual control, orders currency from the cash vendor and keeps branch cash within limits. Reviews CTR information before submission, coaches new tellers on fraud holds and has passed every internal audit in five years.

  • Universal banker

Universal banker at a small-format branch who works the teller line in the morning and opens accounts in the afternoon. Handles 70 transactions a day, opened 26 checking and savings accounts last quarter and books appointments for the mortgage and investment teams. Balances a shared cash recycler with one coworker and covers the drive-up lane on Saturdays.

Bank Teller resume objective examples

An objective fits when you have no direct experience in the role yet. Name the role, the proof you already have and what you will bring to the team.

  • High school graduate

Recent high school graduate with a summer job running a register at a pool snack bar that took $1,500 a day. Took a personal finance class senior year and want a part-time teller job with weekend hours.

  • Restaurant to banking

Server and shift lead with three years closing out cash and card sales for a 90-seat restaurant, including the nightly safe count. Applying for a full-time teller role to move into banking, with open availability.

Common mistakes on a bank teller resume

  • Saying you handled cash without a balancing record

Fix: Every teller handles cash. Give your typical drawer amount, how often you balanced without a difference, and the results of surprise cash counts or audits. A line like "balanced a $15,000 drawer to the penny in 11 of 12 months" tells a branch manager more than any phrase about accuracy.

  • Leaving referrals off the page

Fix: Branches track how often tellers spot a customer who needs a savings account, a credit card or a talk with a personal banker. Give your monthly referral count and how many turned into new accounts. If your branch ranked tellers on referrals, add your place.

  • Listing fraud prevention as a vague skill

Fix: Write one real catch instead: a counterfeit $100 found with the security thread and watermark check, an altered payroll check stopped at the window, or an older customer you protected from a gift card scam by bringing in the branch manager. Leave out anything that could identify the customer.

  • Ignoring the transaction types you know

Fix: Deposits and withdrawals are a given. Banks also want to know if you can sell cashier's checks and money orders, process loan payments, handle commercial deposits from business customers, order cash for the vault or load a cash recycler. Name each one you do without help.

What should a bank teller resume include?

A bank teller resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Cash Deposits & Withdrawals, Check Cashing and Cashier's Checks. Start bullets with verbs like Balanced, Processed and Detected, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Annual BSA/AML and OFAC compliance training (employer-provided), list it in its own section.

Bank Teller resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Balanced a $15,000 cash drawer with no differences in 11 of 12 months and passed every surprise cash count.

  • Stopped a $2,800 altered payroll check at the window by comparing it against the business customer's check stock and calling the company.
  • Referred 22 customers a month to personal bankers, producing 9 new checking accounts and 4 credit card applications per month on average.
  • Completed CTR information for 15 to 20 large cash transactions a month with no corrections returned by the BSA department.
  • Protected an older customer from a gift card scam by pausing a $5,000 cash withdrawal and bringing in the branch manager.
  • Counted and verified 40 commercial deposits each Monday for local restaurants and shops, flagging 6 bag discrepancies in a year.

How to stand out as a bank teller applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Read the posting for branch type

A downtown branch with business customers wants commercial deposits and speed. A suburban branch with a drive-up lane wants pleasant service and referrals. A universal banker posting expects account opening. Move the matching bullets to the top of each job and repeat the posting's title, such as teller, member service representative or relationship banker. Match your resume to this branch posting

  • Lead your letter with a drawer you can be trusted with

Open with your cash-handling record in one sentence, such as balanced registers over two years. Then tie it to the bank: its branch near your home, its community programs or the products you already use. Keep it short and finish with your available days, including Saturdays and any branches you can reach. Write a bank teller cover letter

  • Practice the cash and scam questions

Teller interviews often ask what you would do if your drawer is short, how you would handle a customer who wants to avoid a report on a large deposit, and how you would react to an upset customer whose check is on hold. Some banks give a short counting or math test. Practice answers that follow procedure and involve a supervisor. Rehearse teller interview answers

  • Use plain teller terms

Bank job sites usually filter by words like teller, cash handling, balancing and customer service. Use those exact words in your skills and bullets rather than creative titles like money specialist. Coming from retail? Write "cashier" and "cash office" so the link to teller work is obvious. Bank Teller resume questions

Can I get a teller job without banking experience?

Yes. Banks often hire tellers from grocery, retail and restaurant jobs because counting cash and serving a line of people are the same core habits. Show the register amounts you closed out, how often your count matched, any safe duties and how you calmed upset customers.

Will the bank check my background and credit?

Expect a fingerprint background check. Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act bars people with certain convictions, such as theft or breach of trust, from working at insured banks without FDIC consent. Many banks also review credit history. None of this goes on the resume, but answer application questions honestly.

How should I describe BSA/AML work as a teller?

Keep it factual. Tellers collect identification for Currency Transaction Reports on cash over $10,000 in a business day, keep the monetary instrument log, watch for structuring and pass unusual activity to the BSA officer. Write what you did, such as completing CTR information correctly, and never name a customer or say a report was filed about them.

Is a credit union teller resume any different?

Credit unions often call the job member service representative or member service teller, and they serve members rather than customers. Use the title on the posting in your summary, and mention share accounts, loan payments or auto loan referrals if you handled them. The balancing and fraud proof stays the same.
