Automotive Technician resume example

Service managers sort technician resumes by ASE status, brand training and diagnostic depth. List the ASE tests you have passed (A1 to A8, plus L1 or L3 if you hold them), any factory training levels, and whether you handle drivability and electrical diagnosis or mostly maintenance and brakes. Then show productivity and quality: hours flagged, comeback rate and repair-order counts.

Automotive Technician resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Automotive technology graduate with an associate degree, ASE Entry-Level certifications in brakes, suspension and electrical, and EPA Section 609 certification. Completed 900 lab hours and a dealer co-op handling oil services, tire and brake work and multipoint inspections, closing 25 repair orders a week. Owns a starter tool set and is building toward full ASE certification.

  • Mid level

ASE Master certified automotive technician with seven years at an independent shop and a dealership. Diagnoses drivability, electrical and network faults with scan tools and a lab scope, and handles brakes, suspension, cooling and transmission service. Flagged 2,400 hours last year with a comeback rate under 1%, and calibrates ADAS cameras and radar after collision and windshield work.

  • Senior

Master-level diagnostic technician and shop foreman with fifteen years in import and domestic repair, holding ASE A1-A8, L1 and L3. Takes the hardest electrical, hybrid and drivability jobs, mentors 6 technicians, and reviews every comeback for root cause. Brought the shop comeback rate down from 3.1% to 0.8% while the diagnostic bay grew to two technicians.

Common mistakes on an automotive technician resume

  • Listing ASE tests without status or expiry

Fix: "ASE certified" leaves out what matters. Show each area you hold, Master status if it applies, and the expiration year. If a certification lapsed, say so and when you plan to recertify. Service managers often verify credentials, and an honest list protects you if there is a difference between the resume and the record.

  • Hiding your diagnostic level

Fix: Shops pay attention to who can find intermittent electrical faults and drivability problems, not only who can swap parts. Give examples: a network fault traced with a scope, a no-start on a hybrid, a parasitic draw found in a body module. If you mainly do maintenance, brakes and tires, say that honestly and show speed and accuracy instead.

  • No productivity or quality numbers

Fix: Shops track flagged hours, efficiency against book time and comebacks, so use them. A line such as "flagged 2,400 hours last year with a comeback rate under 1%" reads clearly to a service manager. If you do not have exact figures, use repair orders closed per week or a customer satisfaction score you can stand behind.

  • Forgetting tools and newer systems

Fix: Many shops expect technicians to own a full hand tool set, and they want to know which scan tools and software you use. Name your scan platforms, scope experience and any programming tools, plus newer work like ADAS camera and radar calibration or high-voltage battery service. These details show you are ready for the cars on the road today.

What should an automotive technician resume include?

An automotive technician resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as A1 Engine Repair, A2 Automatic Transmission and A4 Suspension & Steering. Start bullets with verbs like Diagnosed, Repaired and Reprogrammed, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as ASE Certified Master Automobile Technician (A1-A8), list it in its own section.

Automotive Technician resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Diagnosed 180 intermittent electrical and network faults with a lab scope and wiring diagrams, cutting repeat visits on those jobs to under 2%.
  • Flagged 2,400 hours in a year at 128% efficiency against book time while holding a comeback rate below 1%.
  • Calibrated forward cameras and radar on 300 vehicles after windshield and collision repairs, passing every post-calibration road test.
  • Replaced and reprogrammed 70 body and powertrain control modules using factory software, with no module failures after delivery.
  • Serviced 45 hybrid and electric vehicles, following high-voltage lockout and PPE steps on every battery and inverter job.
  • Rebuilt the shop's diagnostic process with a written test plan for each concern, lowering average diagnosis time by 30 minutes per job.
  • Performed 1,200 brake, steering and suspension repairs over three years with an alignment recheck rate under 1%.
  • Recovered and recharged refrigerant on 400 A/C systems under EPA Section 609 rules, logging every recovery for the shop's records.
  • Mentored 4 lube and tire technicians into general repair roles, each passing their first two ASE tests within 18 months.
  • Traced a recurring no-start on a fleet of 12 delivery vans to a chafed harness, saving the customer repeated tows and rentals.

How to stand out as an automotive technician applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the shop type and brand

A dealership, a quick-lube chain, an independent repair shop and a fleet garage all hire technicians differently. Read for the brand, the type of work and the level they want, such as A-tech diagnostician or C-tech maintenance. Put your matching experience first and use their words for it. Name the brand training you share with them. Optimize your resume for a shop posting

  • Use the cover letter to describe your best diagnosis

A short letter with one real diagnostic story stands out. Describe the concern, how you tested it and what you found, in four or five sentences. Then list the ASE areas you hold, the tools you own and the schedule you can work. Service managers read these quickly between repair orders, so keep it brief. Write an automotive technician cover letter

  • Prepare for a practical bay test

Many shops ask technicians to diagnose a bugged car or answer technical questions about scan data, voltage drops or brake hydraulics. Review your diagnostic process out loud, from verifying the concern to confirming the fix. Bring your ASE transcript and be ready to talk about a comeback you caused and what you changed. Practice technician interview questions

  • Write a summary that sets your level

Your summary should tell a service manager in two lines whether you are a lube tech, a general repair tech or a diagnostician. Include your ASE status, years in the bay, main specialty and one quality or productivity number. A summary generator can draft options from your details, which you then edit to stay accurate. Automotive Technician resume questions

How should I list ASE certifications?

Write each test by code and name, such as A5 Brakes or A8 Engine Performance, or write Master Automobile Technician if you hold all eight of A1 to A8. Add L1 or L3 separately. Include the expiration year, since ASE certifications must be renewed every five years. Shops often check status through ASE's online verification.

I passed ASE tests but don't have the work experience yet. What do I write?

ASE requires hands-on work experience before it issues the certification, and a qualifying training program can count toward part of it. Until then, write "passed ASE A5 and A4 tests; certification pending work experience." Students can also take the ASE Entry-Level tests. Either way, be exact so a manager does not think you are hiding something.

Do I need EPA Section 609 to work on air conditioning?

Yes. Under the Clean Air Act, anyone who services motor vehicle air conditioning as part of a job or business must be certified under Section 609 and use approved recovery equipment. The certification does not expire. List it with the training provider, such as MACS or ASE, because shops need it on file before you touch refrigerant.

Should I list dealer brand training if I'm applying to an independent shop?

Yes. Factory training shows you were taught to diagnose complex systems a certain way, and independents often see the same vehicles. Name the brand and the level, then translate it into skills: network diagnostics, module programming or a specific transmission family. If you are applying to a different brand's dealer, highlight the general diagnostic work more than the brand.
