Auditor resume example

Audit teams screen first for the kind of auditing you have done: external financial statement audits under PCAOB or AICPA standards, internal audit under the IIA's Global Internal Audit Standards, IT general controls, or government work under the Yellow Book. Scope comes next. Name the industries, entity sizes, control areas tested and findings you wrote, and state your CPA or CIA status plainly.

Auditor resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Audit associate with one busy season at a regional CPA firm, testing cash, receivables and payroll cycles on private manufacturing and nonprofit audits. Builds clean workpapers, runs confirmations and selects samples in IDEA. Passed AUD and FAR on the CPA exam and expects to finish REG and the discipline section within the next year.

  • Mid level

Audit senior with five years of integrated audits under PCAOB standards for public companies in healthcare and industrial products. Plans fieldwork, supervises teams of three to four, and owns revenue, inventory and ITGC areas. Raised 14 control deficiencies last cycle, all remediated before the report date. CPA licensed in Illinois and studying for the CISA.

  • Senior

Internal audit manager and CPA, CIA with eleven years across external audit and corporate internal audit. Builds the annual risk-based plan, leads SOX 404 testing over 180 key controls, and reports findings to the audit committee each quarter. Introduced continuous monitoring on journal entries and vendor master changes, cutting manual sample testing by about a third.

Common mistakes on an auditor resume

  • Listing engagements as a client roster

Fix: A string of client types reads like a timesheet. Group engagements by audit type and industry, then write what you owned on each: the cycle, the sample sizes, the deficiencies you found and the team you supervised. One strong bullet per engagement type beats ten client names, and it keeps you clear of confidentiality problems.

  • Writing "performed testing" with no control or result

Fix: Name the control area, the test and the outcome. "Tested 25 key controls over procure-to-pay, raised 3 deficiencies, all remediated before year end" proves judgment. Say whether you tested design, operating effectiveness or both, and mention the sampling approach when it was statistical or data-driven.

  • Blurring internal and external audit

Fix: The two jobs use different standards and different reporting lines, and recruiters filter on the difference. State whether you supported an opinion under PCAOB or AICPA standards, or reported to an audit committee under IIA standards. If you have done both, give each its own role entry so neither gets lost.

  • Hiding where you stand on the CPA or CIA

Fix: Write the license with its state and year, or your exact exam progress. Since 2024 the CPA exam has three core sections (AUD, FAR, REG) plus one discipline section, so "CPA candidate, AUD and FAR passed, ISC scheduled" is precise. For the CIA, give the parts passed and your target date.

What should an auditor resume include?

An auditor resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as PCAOB Auditing Standards, AICPA Statements on Auditing Standards and IIA Global Internal Audit Standards. Start bullets with verbs like Tested, Assessed and Sampled, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), list it in its own section.

Auditor resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Tested 62 key controls across revenue, procure-to-pay and financial close for a SOX 404 program, raising 5 deficiencies that management fixed within one quarter.
  • Supervised 4 associates through a 1,600-hour integrated audit of a medical device maker, delivering the workpaper package 3 days ahead of the report deadline.
  • Built an IDEA script that tested 100% of 48,000 journal entries for unusual users, weekend posting and round amounts, replacing a 60-item manual sample.
  • Assessed ITGCs over SAP and Workday for 3 business units, finding 2 terminated users with live access and closing the gap through a monthly access review.
  • Led 9 operational audits in a year across warehousing, fleet and procurement, with 31 of 34 action plans closed by their agreed date.
  • Performed the Single Audit of 4 major federal programs for a county health department under Uniform Guidance, reporting 1 compliance finding.
  • Reduced repeat findings from 11 to 3 over two audit cycles by adding root cause analysis to every report and meeting process owners at the 60-day mark.
  • Evaluated 18 vendor SOC 1 reports for complementary user entity controls and mapped each one to an internal control owner.
  • Recommended inventory count controls at 6 distribution centers after test counts found a 2.4% variance, bringing the next cycle under 0.5%.
  • Documented walkthroughs for 14 business processes in a first-year SOX readiness project, giving the external auditor a reliance base in year one.

How to stand out as an auditor applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the audit type in the posting

An internal audit posting, a Big Four style external audit role and an IT audit opening want different evidence. Read which standards, systems and industries the posting names, then put the matching engagement work first and trim the rest. If the role stresses SOX, lead with control counts and deficiencies rather than financial statement tie-outs. Tailor your auditor resume to the posting

  • Use the cover letter to explain your audit path

Auditors often switch lanes, from public accounting to internal audit, from financial to IT audit, or into a new industry. Say why in two sentences, then point to one engagement that proves you can do the new work. Mention your CPA, CIA or CISA status and any travel limits up front so nobody has to ask. Write an auditor cover letter

  • Prepare one finding story in full

Interviewers often ask you to walk through a finding from start to finish: how you spotted it, how you sized the risk, what pushback you got and how it was resolved. Pick one, keep client details out, and practice it in two minutes. Expect questions on sampling, materiality and the COSO components too. Practice auditor interview questions

  • Check the posting's terms against your resume

Audit postings mix framework names, tools and certifications in a single paragraph. Paste one into a keyword matcher next to your resume and see which terms you have actually done but never wrote down, such as SOC report reviews or TeamMate. Add only the ones you can back with a bullet. Compare your resume to an audit posting

Auditor resume questions

How do I move from public accounting audit to internal audit on my resume?

Recast your client work around risk and controls rather than the opinion. Internal audit leaders want to see that you scoped work from a risk assessment, tested design and operating effectiveness, and wrote findings that management fixed. Pull forward SOX, ITGC and process walkthrough experience, and add any operational or compliance reviews you joined. Keep the firm, title and dates, but cut lines about tying out financial statements.

Do I need a CPA license to work as an auditor?

Only a licensed CPA can sign an audit opinion, and public firms usually expect staff to earn the license within a few years. Internal audit, government and IT audit teams often accept the CIA or CISA instead, and many hire before either is done. Education and experience rules for CPA licensure differ by state and several states changed them recently, so check your own board.

How do I describe audit work without breaking client confidentiality?

Describe engagements by industry, size and audit type rather than by client name: "publicly traded medical device maker, roughly 2,000 employees, integrated audit." Report your own work, such as the cycles you owned and the deficiencies you raised, without repeating the details of what a client got wrong. If your firm has a policy on naming clients, follow it.

What should an IT auditor add that a financial auditor would not?

List the ITGC domains you test, usually logical access, change management and computer operations, and the systems underneath them, such as SAP, Oracle, Workday or AWS. Mention SOC 1 and SOC 2 report reviews, automated control testing and any key report validation. A CISA, or progress toward it, belongs near the top.

How do I show the size and complexity of the audits I worked on?

Give a few anchors per role: revenue or asset size of the entities, number of locations or legal entities, the cycles you owned and the hours budget you managed as a senior. A line such as "owned revenue and inventory on a 1,400-hour integrated audit" tells a reviewer far more than a list of clients.
