Sales Manager resume example

A sales manager is measured by the team's number, so your resume should be too. Give team size, team quota attainment, how many reps hit plan, forecast accuracy and how quickly new hires ramped. Show the coaching, hiring and pipeline discipline behind those results. Your own selling record belongs lower on the page as background, not as the headline.

Sales Manager resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

First-time sales manager promoted from senior account executive after three straight years above quota. Now leads a team of five inside sales reps selling office equipment to small businesses, running weekly pipeline reviews and call coaching in Gong. Team reached 104% of plan in the first full year, and two reps earned promotion to outside sales.

  • Mid level

Sales manager leading nine field reps for a regional packaging supplier, with a team quota above twelve million. • Senior

Hires and develops managers from within, with three promoted reps now leading teams. Partners with marketing and operations on pipeline targets and capacity planning.

Common mistakes on a sales manager resume

  • Leading with your old individual quota numbers

Fix: A sales manager resume that opens with "145% of quota as an account executive" tells a hiring VP you still think like a rep. Open with team results: team size, team attainment, percent of reps at or above plan, and revenue the team closed. Move your individual record to the earlier roles where it belongs.

  • Leaving forecast accuracy off the page

Fix: Leaders above you plan around your number. If your commit landed within a few points of actual for several quarters, that is one of the strongest lines you can write. Give the accuracy, the time period and how you got there, such as weekly deal inspection or stage exit criteria. Few applicants report it, so it stands out.

  • Saying nothing about hiring and ramp time

Fix: Building a team is half the job. Report how many reps you hired, how long they took to reach full productivity and how many stayed past a year. If you built an onboarding plan, a certification process or a ride-along program, name it. Ramp time is a number your future boss already tracks, so give it to them.

  • Team results with no context

Fix: "Team hit 120% of plan" means little without the team size, segment, product and starting point. Add context: "took over a team of 7 at 78% of plan and finished the next year at 112%." Also say whether the quota went up. Context makes the result believable and shows you understand what drives it.

What should a sales manager resume include?

A sales manager resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Team Quota Attainment, Percent of Reps at Plan and Bookings Growth. Start bullets with verbs like Coached, Hired and Forecast, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Certified Professional Sales Person (CPSP), National Association of Sales Professionals, list it in its own section.

Sales Manager resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Took over a team of 7 field reps at 78% of plan and finished the next full year at 112%, with 6 of 7 at or above quota.
  • Forecast quarterly bookings within 4% of actual for 6 straight quarters by adding weekly deal inspection and stage exit criteria.
  • Hired 11 reps in 18 months and cut average ramp to full productivity from 9 months to 5 with a structured 60-day onboarding plan.
  • Raised team win rate from 21% to 29% by reviewing 10 recorded calls a week in Gong and running monthly objection drills.
  • Redesigned 3 sales territories using account potential data, balancing pipeline across reps and lifting new logo deals 26%.
  • Built a team playbook covering discovery, pricing approval and handoff to account management, adopted by 4 other regional teams.
  • Cut sales cycle length from 74 days to 58 by requiring a mutual action plan on every deal above the team average size.
  • Kept rep retention at 90% over 2 years in a region where turnover had been the main reason for missed plans.
  • Coached 3 reps through performance plans; 2 returned to quota within 2 quarters and 1 moved to a better-fit role in the company.
  • Grew pipeline coverage from 2.1x to 3.4x of quota by setting weekly prospecting targets and pairing reps with marketing campaigns.

How to stand out as a sales manager applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the team and motion in the posting

Sales manager postings differ by motion and segment: inside or field, new business or renewals, SMB or enterprise, team of five or team of fifteen. Lead with the team you managed that looks most like theirs, and use their language for methods and tools. If their quota is larger than yours, show growth rate and attainment instead. Tailor your sales manager resume

  • Open the cover letter with a turnaround

Sales leaders respond to a short story with numbers. Open with a team you took over, where it stood and where you took it. Add one line on how you coach and one on how you forecast. Close with a specific reason you want to build their team, based on their market or growth plans. Write a sales manager cover letter

  • Prepare for a 30-60-90 day plan

Many sales manager interviews ask for a first-90-days plan, a forecast review or a mock coaching session with a struggling rep. Prepare a simple plan: listen and inspect, then fix pipeline and process, then hire and scale. Bring real examples of a forecast call and a coaching conversation you led, without naming the rep. Practice sales manager interview questions

  • Compare with an individual contributor resume

If you are stepping up from a senior rep role, look at how a sales executive resume reads and then do the opposite at the top of your page. Their headline is personal attainment; yours should be team outcomes. Keep a short version of your selling record in earlier roles, where it supports your credibility as a coach. Sales Manager resume questions

How do I show my first management role if I was a player-coach?

Split the two parts clearly. Give the team result first, such as "led 4 reps to 108% of team quota," then your own book, such as "carried a personal quota of 40% of the team number." Name the management tasks you owned: hiring, one-on-ones, deal reviews, forecasting. Hiring managers treat player-coach roles as real leadership if you show the team's outcome.

Should I still include my individual sales record?

Yes, briefly. Your early quota attainment and President's Club years show you know the job you are coaching. Keep it in your earlier roles with one or two bullets each. The top of your resume should be team results. A first-time manager applicant can carry more individual detail, but a second-time manager should lead with team performance.

How do I talk about rep turnover or people I managed out?

Do not hide it, and do not dwell on it. Show what you changed: "rebuilt a team of 8 after 5 departures, hiring 6 reps who reached full productivity within 5 months." Interviewers will ask about performance management, so prepare one story with the coaching plan, the timeline and the result. Never name the people involved.

Is an inside sales manager resume different from a field sales manager resume?

Yes. Inside sales leaders show activity metrics, call and email cadence, conversion between stages, dialer or engagement tools and fast ramp. Field sales leaders show territory coverage, account plans, travel, longer cycles and larger deals. Use the vocabulary of the role you want and translate where you can, such as meetings booked into pipeline created.

Do sales managers need a license or certification?

Most do not. Some industries require licenses for anyone selling the product, such as insurance producer licenses issued by each state or securities registrations through FINRA, and those rules vary. Outside those fields, certifications are optional. A CRM administrator credential or sales methodology training can help, but team results matter far more.
