Quality Control Inspector resume example

A quality manager screening inspectors wants to know what you measured, with which instruments, against which standard. Name the parts or assemblies, the gauges and CMM software you run, the quality system (ISO 9001, AS9100 or IATF 16949) and the paperwork you own, such as first article reports or nonconformance tickets. Then show what your catches prevented downstream.

Quality Control Inspector resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Quality control inspector trainee with a machining certificate and 14 months of in-process inspection on a CNC line. Checks parts with calipers, micrometers, bore gauges and height gauges, reads GD&T callouts on customer prints, and records results on travelers without errors at audit. Working toward the ASQ CQI and comfortable on rotating shifts.

  • Mid level

Quality control inspector with six years in AS9100 machine shops, running PC-DMIS on a bridge CMM and writing AS9102 first article reports for aerospace brackets and housings. Writes NCRs, prepares MRB packets and runs Gauge R&R studies for the lab. ASQ CQI certified, with customer escapes on assigned part families held to two in three years.

  • Senior

Lead quality inspector with thirteen years across aerospace and automotive suppliers, now running a five-person inspection crew on two shifts. Owns first article, receiving and final inspection plans, the calibration program and supplier source inspection. Cut receiving lead time in half while holding escapes flat, and has hosted AS9100 surveillance audits with no findings in the inspection area.

Common mistakes on a quality control inspector resume

  • Listing gauges without tolerances or features

Fix: "Used calipers and micrometers" fits every applicant. Say what you held and checked: bore diameters to ±0.0005 inch, true position callouts, surface finish with a profilometer, thread gauges on tapped holes. The tighter and more specific the features you name, the faster a quality lead can match you to their parts.

  • Hiding the paperwork side of the job

Fix: Inspectors are hired as much for records as for measurements. Mention first article reports, inspection plans, NCRs you wrote, material certs you reviewed, traveler sign-offs and MRB packets you prepared. Add the system you entered them in, such as an ERP quality module or a standalone QMS, so the reader knows you can work their documentation flow.

  • Reporting rejects instead of what they prevented

Fix: A count of rejected parts says you were busy. Tie it to an outcome: a supplier lot held before it reached assembly, a drifting machine caught before the run finished, or a customer escape rate that dropped after you added a check. One sentence linking a catch to the cost or delay it avoided is worth several plain reject counts.

  • Ignoring audits and calibration

Fix: If you supported an ISO 9001, AS9100 or customer audit, say what you prepared and whether findings were raised in your area. The same goes for the gauge calibration program. Tracking due dates, pulling overdue tools and running Gauge R&R studies shows you understand why the numbers can be trusted.

What should a quality control inspector resume include?

A quality control inspector resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Quality Control Inspector resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Inspected 1,800 machined aerospace parts a month against AS9100 travelers, with 2 customer escapes over 24 months.
  • Wrote 140 AS9102 first article reports in a year, cutting the queue for new part numbers from 9 days to 4.
  • Programmed 35 new PC-DMIS routines for a bracket family, dropping CMM time per part from 22 minutes to 8.
  • Caught a bore diameter drift on a 400-piece run at piece 60 through in-process checks, saving 340 parts from scrap.
  • Held a supplier casting lot of 2,500 pieces at receiving after finding porosity in 4 of 50 samples, preventing a line stoppage.
  • Ran Gauge R&R studies on 18 critical gauges and replaced 3 that exceeded 30% of tolerance.
  • Reduced overdue calibrations from 41 tools to zero in one quarter by building a due-date tracker and a gauge pull routine.
  • Prepared 60 MRB packets with photos, measurements and disposition options, closing 90% within the 5-day target.
  • Trained 7 machine operators on first-piece approval and SPC charting, lowering in-process rejects 28% over six months.
  • Supported an AS9100 recertification audit by organizing 3 years of inspection records, with zero findings in quality control.

How to stand out as a quality control inspector applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the posting's parts, gauges and standard

An inspector posting usually tells you the industry, the quality system and the equipment. Mirror those first: if it asks for Calypso on a Zeiss CMM and AS9102 reports, put those in your headline and top bullets. Move unrelated inspection work lower. Never claim a CMM software you have only watched someone else run. Tailor your resume to an inspector posting

  • Lead the cover letter with your tightest catch

Open with the inspection result that best fits their product: a drifting machine you stopped, a supplier lot you held or a first article you turned around fast. Then name the gauges and standards you share with them and the shifts you can cover. Keep it to three short paragraphs a quality manager can read between audits. Draft an inspector cover letter

  • Prepare for a print-reading test

Many shops hand candidates a drawing and a part. Expect to explain a true position callout, a datum reference frame and a profile tolerance, then measure a feature with their tools. Practice on old prints, review your sampling plan basics and be ready to describe an NCR you wrote from start to close. Practice quality inspector interview questions

  • Pull the exact equipment names from local postings

Quality postings use specific names: Faro arm, Keyence vision system, Mitutoyo height gauge, Rockwell tester. Paste a few local postings into a keyword matcher and see which instruments and standards repeat. Add the ones you have truly used to your skills section with the same spelling, and leave out the rest. Match inspection keywords to a posting

Quality Control Inspector resume questions

Is the ASQ CQI worth getting before I apply for inspector jobs?

It helps, but it is not a requirement for most entry roles. ASQ sets an experience requirement for the CQI, and some of it can be met through education, so check the current rules on the ASQ site. If you are still building hours, list the body of knowledge areas you already use, such as sampling plans and GD&T, and add "CQI exam scheduled" only if you have actually booked it.

How do I show CMM skills if I only run programs someone else wrote?

Be precise about your level. Running and loading programs, writing new routines and editing existing ones are three different jobs. Name the software, such as PC-DMIS or Calypso, and the machine brand if you know it. A line like "run and edit PC-DMIS programs; wrote 12 new routines for bracket families" tells a supervisor exactly where you would fit.

Can a machinist or assembler move into a QC inspector role?

Yes, and the shop floor background is a selling point. Pull out the inspection work you already did: in-process checks, setup approvals, SPC charts you filled in, and parts you stopped because they drifted. Put those bullets first under each job. Then add the gauges you can use and any GD&T course you have finished.

Should I list the industries and quality standards I have worked under?

Yes. Aerospace, automotive, medical device and general fabrication inspect differently. AS9100 shops expect AS9102 first articles and traceability. IATF 16949 suppliers expect PPAP, control plans and SPC. Medical device plants expect device history records and 21 CFR 820 awareness. Name the standard on each job so the reader sees which paperwork you already know.

What if most of my inspection work is visual?

Visual inspection is skilled work when you describe it properly. Name the criteria you judged against, such as IPC-A-610 class 3 solder joints, AWS D1.1 weld profiles or a customer cosmetic standard. Give the volume you inspected each shift and your escape rate at the next stage or at the customer. Lighting, magnification and boundary samples are worth a mention.
