Mental Health Counselor resume example

Clinical directors want your license title and level before they read anything else, because it decides whether you can practice alone, bill insurance or still need supervision. Spell out the state title (LPC, LMHC, LPCC or similar), any associate status and the exam you passed. Then name your populations, your modalities and your caseload, and show measurable change, such as PHQ-9 or GAD-7 scores dropping over treatment.

Common mistakes on a mental health counselor resume

  • Hiding license status or supervision level

Fix: A director needs to know at once if you can practice independently, bill under your own name or still need weekly supervision. Put your license title, state and level in the header or a credentials block. If you are associate level, add your hours to date and the date you expect full licensure, so scheduling and billing can plan around you.

  • Listing modalities you have only read about

Fix: A long list of approaches, from CBT and DBT to EMDR, ACT and play therapy, raises doubts if you cannot discuss them. Name only the modalities you are trained in and use every week. Add the training source and hours for specialized ones, such as an EMDR basic training approved by EMDRIA. Interviewers will ask how you use each one.

  • Skipping the populations and diagnoses you treat

Fix: A counselor for teens with anxiety and a counselor for adults with co-occurring substance use are hired for different openings. Name your populations (ages, settings, cultural groups) and the presenting problems you treat most. Add any languages you counsel in. That lets a director match you to the waitlist they need to clear.

  • Writing no numbers at all

Fix: Counseling outcomes can be measured without breaking privacy. Use caseload size, sessions per week, measurement-based care results, group attendance, crisis assessments completed, or documentation timeliness. "Carried 28 active clients with average PHQ-9 scores falling 6 points over 12 weeks" shows a director both your capacity and your effect on clients.

What should a mental health counselor resume include?

A mental health counselor resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Intake Assessment, DSM-5-TR Diagnosis and Biopsychosocial History. Start bullets with verbs like Counseled, Assessed and Diagnosed, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as State counseling license (title varies: LPC, LMHC, LPCC, LCPC or LCMHC), list it in its own section.

How to stand out as a mental health counselor applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Tailor to the clinic's population and model

Read the posting for population, setting and approach. A school-based program wants adolescents and family work, an IOP wants groups and co-occurring care, a group practice wants a caseload you can bill independently. Move matching experience to the top and use the posting's own terms for modalities you actually practice. Tailor your counseling resume to the role

  • Use the cover letter to explain your clinical approach

Open with your license level and the population you serve best. In one short paragraph, explain how you work, for example how you use measures to guide treatment. Name one result that fits their program. If you are associate level, say how many supervised hours you have and what supervision you need. Keep client details out. Draft a counselor cover letter

  • Prepare for case vignettes and ethics questions

Counseling interviews may include a case vignette: a client with suicidal thoughts, a dual relationship, or a teen who discloses abuse. Practice walking through risk assessment, documentation, consultation and mandated reporting in order. Expect questions on your theoretical orientation and how you handle a client who is not improving. Practice counselor interview questions

  • See how a social work resume frames similar work

Counselors and social workers may apply for the same clinic openings. Looking at a social work example can help you see how case management, discharge planning and community referrals are written. Keep your counseling focus, but borrow any clear ways of showing coordination with psychiatrists, schools or primary care. See a social worker resume example

Mental Health Counselor resume questions

How do I list my license when the title is different in each state?

Use the exact title your state board issues and name the state, such as "LMHC, Washington" or "LPC, Texas." If you hold an associate or provisional license, write that title too, since it signals you are still under supervision. Add the exam you passed, the NCE or NCMHCE, if it helps. Leave the license number for the application.

I am still collecting supervised hours. How do I show that?

Be clear and specific. Write your associate license title, the number of supervised hours completed and the total your state requires, and when you expect full licensure. For example: "LPC Associate (Texas), 2,400 supervised hours completed, full LPC expected June 2027." Hour totals and supervision rules vary by state, so check your board's current requirements.

Is the NCC the same as a license?

No. The National Certified Counselor credential from NBCC is a voluntary national certification. It does not let you practice on its own. Your state license does that. The NCC can still be worth listing, because it shows you met national standards, and some employers list it as preferred. Put it in your credentials block under your license.

How do I describe outcomes without breaking confidentiality?

Use group numbers, never stories that could identify a client. Report caseload size, completed treatment episodes, average change on standard measures such as the PHQ-9 or GAD-7, no-show rates or group attendance. Avoid ages, rare diagnoses, locations or details from sessions. If your agency publishes outcome data, stick to the figures it already shares.
