Help Desk Technician resume example

A help desk lead screening applicants wants to know three things: how many tickets you closed a day, how often you fixed the issue on first contact, and whether callers left calmer than they arrived. Name the ticketing system, the channels you covered (phone, chat, walk-up), your SLA targets and the escalation rules you followed. Then show one fix you turned into a knowledge base article.

Help Desk Technician resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

Ready to step into a service desk supervisor role.

Common mistakes on a help desk technician resume

  • Listing tasks with no volume or speed

Fix: "Answered tickets and reset passwords" describes every help desk job. Add the numbers that define the work: tickets per day, first contact resolution rate, average handle time, SLA met percentage and satisfaction score. One bullet such as "Closed 38 tickets a day at 81% first contact resolution" tells a supervisor more than a whole list of duties.

  • Hiding the people side of the job

Fix: Help desk work is customer service with a technical core. Show it with proof, not adjectives: a CSAT score, a compliment from a department head, a time you calmed an executive whose laptop died before a board meeting. Mention plain-language explanations and how you handled callers who were not technical.

  • Skipping escalation and documentation

Fix: Supervisors want to know you escalate the right tickets with good notes, not too early and not too late. Write about the tier 2 handoffs you made, the ticket notes others relied on, and the knowledge base articles you wrote or updated. A line about cutting repeat tickets with a self-service article is strong evidence.

  • Burying the tools under a wall of acronyms

Fix: A skills block with 40 products reads like a copy of every posting. Pick the ticketing system, the directory service, the remote access tool and the endpoint platform you actually used daily. Then name each one inside a bullet, so the reader sees what you did with it, such as clearing account lockouts in Active Directory.

What should a help desk technician resume include?

A help desk technician resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as First Contact Resolution (FCR), Average Handle Time and SLA Compliance. Start bullets with verbs like Resolved, Triaged and Escalated, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as CompTIA A+, list it in its own section.

How to stand out as a help desk technician applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match the posting's channels and tools

Help desk postings differ in the details: one wants phone queue experience and ServiceNow, another wants walk-up support for a school district and Google Workspace. Put the posting's ticketing tool and channel in your headline or summary, move the matching job bullets to the top, and drop products the employer never mentions so your real strengths stay visible. Tailor your help desk resume to a posting

  • Use the cover letter to show how you talk to users

A help desk cover letter is a sample of your communication. Keep it short and clear, open with the ticket volume or users you supported, and describe one call you turned around: the problem, what you said, and how it ended. Mention the shifts you can cover. Skip the jargon unless the posting uses it. Draft a help desk cover letter

  • Practice the troubleshooting walk-through

Expect scenario questions such as "A user cannot print" or "Outlook keeps asking for a password." Talk through it out loud: questions you would ask, what you would check first, when you would escalate and what goes in the ticket. Prepare one story about a difficult caller and one about a fix you documented for others. Rehearse help desk interview questions

  • Write bullets around your ticket stats

Pull your last six months of ticket data before you write anything: daily volume, first contact resolution, SLA results and satisfaction scores. Each number becomes the anchor of one bullet, with the tool and the user group around it. If you only have rough figures, round down and keep them consistent across your resume and LinkedIn. Help Desk Technician resume questions

Do I need CompTIA A+ before applying for help desk jobs?

It depends on the employer. Some postings require it, others list it as preferred, and some hire on customer service plus hands-on skill. A+ takes two exams, Core 1 and Core 2, and renews every three years through CompTIA's continuing education program. If you are partway through, write "CompTIA A+ (Core 1 passed, Core 2 scheduled)" with a date rather than leaving it off.

Can retail or call center experience count on a help desk resume?

Yes, if you translate it. A call center job already gave you queue discipline, handle time, scripts, angry callers and accurate notes. Retail gave you patience with people who are stressed and in a hurry. Put those jobs in your experience section with bullets about volume, satisfaction scores and problem solving, and add a home lab or volunteer tech work for the technical side.

What if my team never shared my ticket numbers?

Rebuild them from what you can see. If you still have access, filter your own closed tickets by date in ServiceNow, Zendesk or whatever tool you used, and a rough daily average is one report away. If you lost access, estimate honestly and say so in an interview. You can also report things you know for certain: the number of users you supported, the hours you covered, and the knowledge base articles you wrote.

Should I list shift, weekend or on-call availability?

If the posting mentions coverage hours, yes. Help desks often run early, late or weekend shifts, and a line such as "Available for 2nd shift and rotating Saturdays" answers a scheduling question before the call. Put it in your summary or at the end of your contact block, not as a separate section. Leave it off if your availability is limited, and discuss it later.
