Forklift Operator resume example

Before anything else, a shift manager checks which powered trucks you run and how high you lift: sit-down counterbalance, stand-up reach, order picker, clamp or telehandler, and racking up to what height. After that come trailers or pallets moved a shift, product damage and safe days. State who certified you and when, since OSHA makes each employer train and evaluate its own operators.

Common mistakes on a forklift operator resume

  • Claiming a forklift license that transfers

Fix: "Licensed forklift driver" can sound like a misunderstanding of the rules. Write "Forklift certified, sit-down and reach truck, evaluated 2025 by Wabash Crossing Distribution" instead. It shows you know certification belongs to each employer and gives the reader the details needed to set up your evaluation.

  • Listing trucks without heights, aisles or attachments

Fix: A reach truck in a 9-foot aisle at 32 feet is different from a counterbalance truck on a dock. Add lift heights, very narrow aisles, double-deep or drive-in racking, and attachments such as clamps, side shifters, push-pull or carpet poles. Those details decide which open position you fit.

  • Giving no damage or accuracy record

Fix: Damaged product and mis-slotted pallets cost a warehouse real money, so operators who avoid them stand out. Give your damage incidents over a period, putaway or pick accuracy, and any safety recognition. "Zero product damage reports in 14 months" is a strong bullet on its own.

  • Forgetting truck care and pedestrian safety

Fix: Show that you complete the pre-shift checklist, tag out a truck with a defect, change and water batteries or swap propane cylinders correctly, and yield to pedestrians at intersections. Supervisors trust operators who report problems instead of driving through them.

What should a forklift operator resume include?

A forklift operator resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Sit-Down Counterbalance, Stand-Up Reach Truck and Order Picker. Start bullets with verbs like Loaded, Unloaded and Staged, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Forklift Operator Training and Evaluation, employer-certified under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l), list it in its own section.

How to stand out as a forklift operator applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Put the posting's truck types at the top

Forklift postings name the equipment: reach truck, order picker, clamp, sit-down or telehandler, often with a lift height. Put the trucks you share with the posting in your headline, list them first in skills and move the job where you used them to the top. If you have not run one of their trucks, say you are ready to train on it. Tailor your resume to a forklift posting

  • Add a short note about shift and start date

Warehouses often hire for a specific shift and start date. A short cover note that names the shift you want, your truck types, your last evaluation year and when you can start helps a recruiter place you quickly. Add a line about your safety record if it is strong. Write a forklift operator cover note

  • Get ready for the driving evaluation

Expect a written quiz and a practical evaluation on the employer's trucks. Review the pre-shift inspection, load capacity plates, travelling with the load low, horn use at intersections and what to do if a truck tips. Interviewers may also ask how you handle pressure to move faster than is safe. Practice a calm, specific answer. Practice forklift operator interview questions

  • Pull the right equipment terms from local postings

Sites in your area may call the same truck different names: stand-up reach, Class II, narrow aisle or high-reach. Paste a few local postings into a skills extractor to see which terms they use most, then use those words on your resume next to the trucks you have actually been evaluated on. Forklift Operator resume questions

Is there an official forklift license I can carry to my next job?

Not in the way a driver's license works. Under OSHA's powered industrial truck standard, 29 CFR 1910.178(l), each employer must train you, evaluate you on its trucks and site, and certify that you passed. Earlier training still counts as background. List each certification with the employer, the truck types and the year, and expect your new employer to evaluate you before you drive.

How often does forklift certification need renewing?

OSHA requires an evaluation of each operator's performance at least once every three years. Refresher training is also required after an accident or near miss, when you are seen operating unsafely, when you move to a different type of truck, or when workplace conditions change. Put your most recent evaluation year on the resume so the reader knows it is current.

Which numbers belong on a forklift operator resume?

Pick numbers your shift already tracks: trailers loaded or unloaded per shift, pallets moved, putaways or replenishments completed, product damage reports, inventory accuracy in your zone and days without a recordable injury. One honest number per job works better than a list of percentages. If your site measures against a rate or engineered standard, give your average against it.

Can I apply if I have only used an electric pallet jack?

Yes, and say so. Under OSHA, an electric pallet jack is a powered industrial truck, so if your employer trained and evaluated you on one, you already hold a certification for that truck type. List it with the year, add the warehouse tasks you did with it and say you are ready to train on sit-down or reach trucks. Many warehouses train operators on new truck types in-house.

Do I mention a past incident on my resume?

No. Your resume should show your current training and safe record. If an incident led to refresher training, the refresher itself is simply part of your training history. If an employer asks directly in the interview, answer honestly and explain what you changed afterward, such as slowing down at intersections or always using a spotter on ramps.
