Finance Manager resume example

A finance manager resume is judged on what you owned, not what you supported. Name the P&L or cost centers in your care, the size of the budget, the team you lead and the leaders you partner with. Then show decisions that finance drove: a forecast that held, a cost program, a pricing change, a faster close or a stronger cash position.

Finance Manager resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Senior financial analyst stepping into a first finance manager role after five years in FP&A and corporate accounting. Built the annual budget for two business units, ran monthly variance reviews with department heads and led two junior analysts through a planning system rollout. CPA licensed, with a strong close background and growing experience presenting to the executive team.

  • Mid level

Finance manager with nine years across accounting and FP&A in manufacturing. Owns planning, forecasting and close review for a three-plant division, leads a team of four and partners with plant managers on cost and capital decisions. • Senior

Senior finance manager and CPA with fifteen years in healthcare services and consumer products, reporting to the CFO. Owns the annual plan, lender reporting and board materials, and led a working capital program that released cash by cutting receivable days from 52 to 38.

Common mistakes on a finance manager resume

  • Describing reports instead of decisions

Fix: "Prepared monthly variance reports" says you were busy. "Flagged a 6% overrun in freight in March, which led the plant to change carriers and recover it by Q3" says you changed an outcome. For each role, find two or three moments where your analysis moved a decision, and lead with those.

  • Hiding the size of what you own

Fix: Scale tells a reader which job you are ready for. Give the revenue or cost base you cover, the number of entities, sites or departments, and the budget you build. Rounded numbers are fine. Without scale, a manager of a small team at a large company and a solo finance lead look the same.

  • Leaving the team out

Fix: If you manage people, write about them: how many, what roles, who you hired, who was promoted and how you raised the quality of their work. Finance leaders hire managers who develop analysts and accountants. One line on a direct report you prepared for promotion speaks well for you.

  • Skipping cash and working capital

Fix: Profit is one view; cash is the one owners and lenders watch. Show the 13-week cash forecast you ran, a change in days sales outstanding or inventory turns, capex approvals you managed and any covenant reporting. These lines tell a CFO you think about the whole business, not just the P&L.

What should a finance manager resume include?

A finance manager resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Annual Operating Plan, Rolling Forecast and Variance Analysis. Start bullets with verbs like Led, Forecast and Partnered, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), list it in its own section.

Finance Manager resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Owned the annual operating plan and monthly forecast for a 3-plant division with a cost base of roughly $120M, holding forecast error under 2% for 6 quarters.
  • Led a team of 5 analysts and accountants, promoting 2 to senior roles and cutting review notes on close files by half within a year.
  • Shortened the month-end close from 9 business days to 5 by moving reconciliations into a shared calendar and setting cutoff rules with operations.
  • Partnered with the plant manager on a scrap reduction program that lifted gross margin 1.8 points in 12 months.
  • Built a 13-week cash forecast that gave the CFO early warning of a seasonal gap and avoided drawing on the revolver for 2 years.
  • Reduced receivable days from 49 to 37 by working with sales and credit on terms, invoicing speed and a weekly collections review.
  • Moved budgeting from 40 linked spreadsheets to Adaptive Planning, finishing the next annual plan 3 weeks sooner with 30 department owners entering their own inputs.
  • Reviewed 28 capital requests in a year, adding post-project reviews that cut approved spend on underused equipment by about 15%.
  • Prepared monthly board and lender packages, including covenant calculations, with no restated figures across 4 years.
  • Coordinated the year-end audit across 3 entities, reducing auditor adjustments from 7 to 1 by tightening accrual reviews.

How to stand out as a finance manager applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Weight the resume toward the posting's side

Finance manager postings lean either toward accounting and control or toward planning and partnering. Read the duty list, then order your bullets so the matching side comes first and your credential fits it. If the role reports to a plant or business unit leader, lead with operational partnership rather than corporate reporting. Match your resume to a finance manager posting

  • Use the cover letter for one business decision

A short story about a decision you shaped tells a CFO more than a list of reports. Pick one: a cost program, a pricing change, a forecast that changed a hiring plan. Say what the numbers showed, what you recommended and what happened. Then mention team size and the systems you would bring. Write a finance manager cover letter

  • Prepare to walk through your P&L

Interviewers often ask you to explain the main drivers of the business you support, a forecast that missed, and how you handle a leader who disagrees with the numbers. Practice describing your P&L in two minutes, then one difficult conversation. Expect a question on how you develop your team. Practice finance manager interview questions

  • Check the analyst example for contrast

If your resume still reads like an analyst's, compare it with the financial analyst example. Lines about building models and dashboards belong there; your resume should show what changed because of them and who you led. Rewrite two analyst-style bullets into ownership bullets before you apply. See the financial analyst example

Finance Manager resume questions

What separates a finance manager resume from a senior analyst's?

Ownership and people. An analyst resume shows models and reports; a manager resume shows a budget you were accountable for, analysts you led and decisions you changed. Each bullet should name the leader you advised, the call that was made and what happened next. If you review other people's work or run the close calendar, say so in the first line of the role.

Do I need a CPA or an MBA to become a finance manager?

Neither is always required. Roles that lean toward controllership, close and audit often prefer a CPA. Roles that lean toward planning and business partnering may value an MBA, the CMA or AFP's FP&A certification. Read the posting's duties to see which side it leans toward, and put your matching credential near your name.

How do I show leadership if I have no direct reports yet?

Show the people you led without the title. Examples are leading two analysts through the annual budget, onboarding a new hire, reviewing others' reconciliations or running a cross-functional project with operations. Give the number of people and the result. Hiring managers promote from that evidence, so make it easy to find.

How much detail should I give on finance systems?

Name the ERP, the planning tool and the reporting layer, such as NetSuite, Adaptive Planning and Power BI, and say what you did in each: built the budget model, owned the chart of accounts, designed dashboards or led an implementation. A system rollout you managed is worth its own bullet, with timing and adoption.

How do I write about confidential financial results?

Round numbers and use percentages or ranges. "Owned a budget of roughly $40M" or "improved gross margin by 2.1 points" gives scale without exposing anything sensitive. If your employer is public, avoid quoting figures that were not released. Private company leaders will understand if you describe size in bands.
