Delivery Driver resume example

Route supervisors scan a delivery driver resume for the vehicle you drive, the stops you finish in a day and how clean your record is. Name cargo van, box truck or straight truck and your license class, then give stops per route, on-time rate and miles without an accident. Customer handling, such as signatures, ID checks and damage-free installs, comes next.

Common mistakes on a delivery driver resume

  • Only writing "delivered packages"

Fix: Every delivery driver delivers. Show the size of your day: stops per route, packages or orders per shift, miles driven and on-time percentage. "Finished 140 stops a day across 85 miles with a 99% on-time rate" tells a route manager you can take a full route in week one.

  • Leaving the vehicle and license class vague

Fix: Put your license type and the vehicles you have driven near the top: cargo van, step van, 16- or 26-foot box truck, liftgate. If you hold a CDL or a DOT medical card, list it with the expiration date. Missing this line can get you skipped for a route you are qualified to drive.

  • Ignoring the customer at the door

Fix: Drivers are often the only person a customer meets from the company. Mention signature and photo proof of delivery, age checks for alcohol or prescriptions, handling a missing-package call, returns pickup and your customer rating. One line on how you handled a difficult delivery shows good judgment.

  • Skipping inspections and incident-free time

Fix: Pre-trip and post-trip vehicle checks, reporting defects, backing with a spotter or getting out to look, and securing the load are what keep a fleet's insurance down. Give your accident-free months or miles and say you complete inspection reports on every shift.

What should a delivery driver resume include?

A delivery driver resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Last-Mile Delivery, Multi-Stop Routes and Route Optimization. Start bullets with verbs like Delivered, Loaded and Sequenced, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as Valid state driver's license with a clean motor vehicle record, list it in its own section.

How to stand out as a delivery driver applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Line up your license and vehicle with each route

Delivery postings say exactly what they need: a cargo van route, a CDL Class B box truck, pharmacy or appliance work, early starts. Put that vehicle and license line at the top, move the job that matches to the top of your history and use the posting's words, such as "last mile" or "route driver." Leave out vehicles they do not use. Tailor your resume to a delivery route

  • Use a cover letter for the jobs you really want

Many route jobs do not ask for one, but a short note helps for pharmacy, medical, appliance or company-fleet jobs. Mention your clean record, the area you know well, the shift you can start on and one delivery result. Keep it under 150 words so a busy route manager reads it. Draft a delivery driver cover letter

  • Prepare for the road test and safety questions

Some employers give a road test or ask about backing, a package that will not fit in a locker, a dog in the yard, a customer who says nothing arrived, or what you do after a minor fender bender. Answer with the steps you would follow and who you would call. Bring your license and any DOT medical card. Practice delivery driver interview questions

  • Thinking about a CDL? See the truck driver example

If you plan to move from van or box truck work to tractor-trailer driving, look at how a CDL driver resume handles endorsements, hours of service and safe miles. Many of your delivery results will carry over, and you can start adding those terms once you are in CDL training. See the truck driver resume example

Delivery Driver resume questions

Do I need a CDL to be a delivery driver?

For most van and smaller box truck routes, no; a regular license is enough. A Class B CDL is needed for a single vehicle rated 26,001 pounds GVWR or more, which covers many larger straight trucks. Separately, if you drive a vehicle rated 10,001 pounds or more across state lines, federal rules generally require a DOT medical card even without a CDL. Intrastate rules vary by state.

How should I show my driving record?

Do not paste your record. Employers pull your motor vehicle record themselves with your permission. Instead, write a plain line such as "clean MVR, no moving violations in 5 years" or "3 years and 120,000 miles without a preventable accident," if it is true. If you have one old ticket, you do not need to mention it on the resume; be honest if asked.

Should I list app-based delivery work?

Yes. App-based food, grocery and package delivery is real driving experience. List it as one entry, such as "Independent Delivery Contractor," with the platforms in a short line and the dates. Add your delivery count, customer rating and years on the platforms. That shows route speed, navigation and customer contact, which every delivery employer needs.

What if the job includes heavy items or installation?

Say exactly what you lifted and set up. Appliance, furniture and medical equipment routes look for two-person team experience, the weight you can move with a dolly or stair climber, hookups for washers or ice makers, and haul-away of old units. Give a damage or callback rate if you have one. The posting will usually list the lifting requirement; match it.

Does the vehicle type really matter on the resume?

It does. Backing a 26-foot box truck into a tight alley is different from parking a minivan. Name the vehicle and length, liftgate use and any routes in dense downtown areas, rural roads or gated apartment complexes. An employer can then match you to a route without a long phone screen.
