Cloud Engineer resume example

Cloud engineering teams want to know which provider you build on, how you provision it and what you own once it runs. Name AWS, Azure or Google Cloud up front, then the services you designed with: VPCs, IAM, managed databases, landing zones. Back it with infrastructure as code coverage, workloads migrated, monthly spend reduced and audit findings closed.

Cloud Engineer resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Cloud engineer with two years in IT operations and one year on AWS, holding the Solutions Architect – Associate and Terraform Associate credentials. Built VPCs, IAM roles and RDS instances in Terraform for a home lab and a small nonprofit migration. Writes Python and Bash, knows Linux well and wants to grow on a platform team that reviews infrastructure code.

  • Mid level

Cloud engineer with five years on AWS and Azure for insurance and retail workloads. Built a multi-account landing zone in Terraform, moved 85 on-premises servers to EC2 and RDS with weekend cutovers, and cut monthly compute spend 31% through rightsizing and Savings Plans. Owns networking, IAM and cost reporting for twelve product teams.

  • Senior

Senior cloud engineer with eleven years in infrastructure, the last seven designing AWS and Azure platforms for regulated industries. Led a 400-server data center exit, wrote the Terraform module library used by thirty teams, and put guardrails in place that closed 180 audit findings. Sets cloud standards with security and finance, and mentors four engineers.

Common mistakes on a cloud engineer resume

  • Clicking through the console and saying so

Fix: Teams hiring cloud engineers expect infrastructure as code. If your past work was mostly console-based, describe what you codified since: "moved 140 hand-built resources into Terraform modules with remote state." State the share of the environment that is now managed in code, and name the tool, whether Terraform, CloudFormation, Bicep or Pulumi.

  • Skipping networking and identity

Fix: Many cloud problems start with routing or permissions. Mention the VPC or VNet designs you built, private endpoints, Transit Gateway or hub-and-spoke peering, DNS, and how you scoped IAM roles or Entra ID groups. A reviewer wants to know you can design these on purpose, not only troubleshoot them.

  • Describing a migration with no scale

Fix: "Migrated applications to AWS" could mean one website or four hundred servers. Give the count of workloads, the method (rehost, replatform, refactor), the downtime window and what happened to cost or reliability after. Migration bullets are often the strongest on a cloud resume when they carry numbers.

  • Leaving security controls to the security team

Fix: Cloud engineers usually own the guardrails. List the controls you put in place: Service Control Policies, Azure Policy, encryption by default, GuardDuty or Defender alerts, and how many audit or CIS benchmark findings you closed. This matters for regulated employers in healthcare, finance and government.

What should a cloud engineer resume include?

A cloud engineer resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Start bullets with verbs like Provisioned, Migrated and Rightsized, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, list it in its own section.

Cloud Engineer resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Provisioned a 14-account AWS landing zone with Control Tower and Terraform, giving every product team a secured account within a day of request.
  • Migrated 120 on-premises VMware servers to EC2 and RDS over 5 months, with each cutover finished inside a 4-hour window.
  • Rightsized 260 instances and moved steady workloads to Savings Plans, reducing monthly compute spend 33%.
  • Codified 300 hand-built resources into reusable Terraform modules, bringing 95% of production infrastructure under version control.
  • Segmented a flat VNet into hub-and-spoke with private endpoints, removing public exposure from 40 Azure SQL and storage resources.
  • Consolidated 9 VPN tunnels into a Transit Gateway design, cutting cross-region network incidents from 7 a quarter to 1.
  • Closed 140 CIS benchmark findings by enforcing encryption, MFA and logging through Service Control Policies and AWS Config rules.
  • Built cross-region backups and a tested restore runbook for 30 databases, meeting a 1-hour recovery point objective in quarterly drills.
  • Set up tag enforcement and weekly cost reports by team, raising the share of attributable spend from 52% to 97%.
  • Scheduled automatic shutdown of 180 dev and test instances outside working hours, saving 6,000 compute hours a month.

How to stand out as a cloud engineer applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Lead with the provider the posting runs on

A posting for an Azure shop and one for an AWS shop need different first lines. Put the matching provider and its service names in your headline and top bullets, and move the other provider lower. If the posting stresses migration, open with migration numbers. If it stresses governance, open with guardrails and audits. Tailor your cloud resume to the posting

  • Name their platform problem in the cover letter

Postings often hint at the work: a data center exit, a multi-account cleanup, rising spend. Name that need in your opening line and pair it with the closest project you have done, with the scale and result. Mention the certification that matches their provider, then stop. Three paragraphs is enough. Generate a cloud engineer cover letter

  • Rehearse whiteboard designs and failure stories

Expect to sketch a VPC with public and private subnets, explain IAM role assumption across accounts, and walk through how you would make a web app highly available. Interviewers also ask about an outage or a bill spike you dealt with. Prepare one of each, with what you changed afterward. Practice cloud engineer interviews

  • Separate cloud foundation work from pipeline work

If your experience mixes CI/CD with infrastructure, compare your resume with a DevOps example to see where the line sits. Keep landing zones, networking, identity and cost in the cloud bullets, and move build pipelines to a shorter line. That split makes the role you are applying for clear. Cloud Engineer resume questions

Should I focus on one cloud provider or list all three?

Lead with the provider you know deeply and the posting uses. Most cloud roles run mainly on one platform, so depth there matters more than breadth. If you have real work on a second provider, add it with the services you used, for example "Azure: AKS, Entra ID, Azure SQL." Do not list a provider you only saw in a training course.

How is a cloud engineer resume different from a DevOps resume?

DevOps resumes usually center on pipelines, release speed and developer tooling. Cloud engineer resumes center on the platform itself: account structure, networking, identity, security controls, cost and migrations. If you do both, split your bullets so the cloud foundation work is visible, and match the balance to how the posting describes the job.

Which cloud certifications are worth listing?

Associate-level certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate and Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer are common asks in cloud postings. Add HashiCorp Terraform Associate if you write Terraform. Provider certifications expire and must be renewed, so list the year you earned or renewed each one.

How do I show cost savings without sharing confidential numbers?

Use percentages or relative figures. "Cut monthly compute spend 34% by rightsizing 220 instances and moving steady workloads to Savings Plans" tells the story without revealing the budget. Name the method: tagging policies, Reserved Instances, Spot capacity, storage lifecycle rules or shutting down idle dev and test environments on a schedule.
