Account Executive resume example

Sales leaders read an account executive resume for five numbers: quota attainment by year, quota size, average deal size, sales cycle length and win rate. Add the segment you sell into (SMB, mid-market or enterprise) and how much of your pipeline you sourced yourself. With those on the page, a VP can picture you in their territory within seconds.

Account Executive resume summary examples

Pick the one closest to your level and replace the specifics with your own.

  • Entry level

Account executive promoted from sales development after 14 months, now selling HR software to companies with 50 to 200 employees. Closed 112% of first-year quota with an average deal of 14K and a 38-day cycle. Sources about half of own pipeline through outbound and partner referrals, and runs every deal with a written mutual action plan.

  • Mid level

Mid-market account executive with four years selling workforce software to companies with 200 to 2,000 employees. Finished at 121%, 108% and 134% of quota, with average deal size near 60K and a 75-day cycle. Runs MEDDICC on every opportunity, multi-threads to finance and IT, and earned President's Club in 2024.

  • Senior

Enterprise account executive closing six- and seven-figure deals with healthcare and financial services organizations. Exceeded quota in five of six years, displaced two incumbent vendors at national insurers and closed the company's largest new logo deal. Builds executive business cases, manages security and procurement reviews, and mentors newer AEs on complex deals.

Common mistakes on an account executive resume

  • Giving attainment without the quota behind it

Fix: "130% of quota" means different things on a small and a large number. Add the quota size or annual bookings and the segment, such as "132% of a 900K new-business quota in mid-market." If exact figures are sensitive, add rank against your peers instead. Either way, give each year rather than only your best one.

  • Leaving out deal size, cycle length and win rate

Fix: These three numbers tell a hiring manager whether your experience fits their motion. A rep closing 15K deals in 30 days and one closing 250K deals in nine months are different hires. Put your averages in the summary or in your current role, and name your largest deal with its timeline.

  • Ignoring the pipeline you built yourself

Fix: Many AE teams expect reps to source a share of their own pipeline. Say how much you sourced through outbound, events or referrals, and what share of your closed business it became. Self-sourced pipeline proves you will not stall when inbound slows down, and it is one of the first questions in many AE interviews.

  • Naming no sales method

Fix: Sales leaders want to know how you run a deal. If you work with MEDDICC, Challenger, Sandler or Command of the Message, name it and show it in a bullet, such as a mutual action plan that pulled a close date forward. A named method shows your wins are repeatable, not lucky.

What should an account executive resume include?

An account executive resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Quota Attainment, New Logo Bookings and Annual Contract Value (ACV). Start bullets with verbs like Closed, Sourced and Prospected, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as HubSpot Inbound Sales Certification, list it in its own section.

How to stand out as an account executive applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match your segment and motion to the posting

AE postings differ by segment, deal size and motion: SMB transactional, mid-market, enterprise, inbound-heavy or outbound-heavy. Lead with the numbers that fit theirs. If they want outbound hunters, open with self-sourced pipeline. If they want enterprise closers, open with your largest deal and its cycle. Use their methodology terms where true. Optimize your resume for an AE job

  • Use the cover letter as a prospecting email

Write it like a good outbound message: short, specific and about them. Open with one result that fits their segment, add one observation about their market or buyers, and close with a clear ask for a conversation. Keep it to about 150 words. Hiring managers notice reps who can write a concise email. Draft an account executive cover letter

  • Prepare a mock discovery or deal review

Many AE interviews include a mock discovery call, a demo or a walk-through of a deal you won and one you lost. Prepare a deal story using your methodology: pain, champion, decision process and how you closed. Practice asking questions more than pitching. Bring your attainment numbers by year, since you will be asked. Practice account executive interview questions

  • Check your numbers and terms before you send

An AE resume lives or dies on its numbers. Run it through a resume checker to make sure each role shows attainment, deal size and cycle, and that the posting's key terms appear. Then read it as a sales leader would: can you see your segment, your method and your best year in ten seconds? Check your account executive resume

Account Executive resume questions

How do I write my first account executive resume after an SDR role?

Lead with what you created as an SDR: meetings booked, pipeline sourced and how much of it closed. Then show any deals you ran yourself, even small ones, and any time you joined discovery or demo calls. Put your promotion speed in a bullet. Hiring managers want to see that you understand the full cycle, not only the first touch.

How do I explain a year below quota?

Give honest context in a few words and pair it with a stronger signal. You might write "86% of quota in a year the territory was cut by a third" or show your rank against peers. Do not leave the number out if you list other years, because gaps invite questions. Be ready to explain what you changed afterward.

How do I move from SMB to mid-market or enterprise?

Show the parts of your work that look like bigger deals: multi-threading, longer cycles, security reviews, procurement and legal redlines. Name your largest deal and its cycle length. Mention executive meetings and business cases you built. Hiring managers moving reps up want evidence you can handle more stakeholders, not just higher volume.

Should I list President's Club on my resume?

Yes. It is one of the clearest signals in sales, because qualification rules are set by the company and usually tied to finishing well above plan. List the year and, if you know it, your rank, such as "President's Club 2024, top 5 of 60 AEs." Put it in the bullet for that role or in an awards line below experience.

Should I share exact quota figures?

Many AEs list quota size because it shows the scale of their territory, and most sellers consider it fair to share. Some employers treat it as confidential, so check any agreement you signed. If you prefer not to share exact figures, use percent attainment, rank and average deal size, which still tell the story clearly.
