Copywriter resume example

Creative directors open a copywriter's portfolio before they finish the resume, so the resume has one job: get them to click. Put the portfolio link in the header, name the brands and formats you have written for, and show range across voices. Then prove the copy worked: click-through lifts, landing page conversion tests, campaign awards or a concept that made it to air.

Common mistakes on a copywriter resume

  • Writing your own resume in flat corporate prose

Fix: Your resume is the first copy a creative director reads from you. Cut filler like "responsible for" and "various projects." Write short, specific lines with a strong verb and a concrete detail. A clever headline in the summary is fine if it is clear. Read the page out loud and cut anything you would cut from a client's ad.

  • Showing only one voice

Fix: Hiring teams want to see that you can shift voice to fit a brand. If every sample and bullet sounds the same, they wonder about your range. Name the voices you have written in, such as playful consumer packaged goods, technical B2B software or calm healthcare, and pick portfolio pieces that prove each one.

  • Taking credit for a test you did not run

Fix: Conversion claims get checked in interviews. Say what you wrote and who ran the test, for example "wrote the winning variant in a 4-version landing page test run by the growth team." Include the lift and the metric. Being precise about your part makes the result more believable, and it shows you understand how testing works.

  • Ignoring the constraints you wrote within

Fix: Character limits, legal review, regulated claims in finance or health, and brand guidelines are part of the craft. If you wrote ads under platform limits, worked with medical-legal-regulatory review, or kept product claims compliant, say so. Regulated industries hire copywriters who can be persuasive and accurate at the same time.

What should a copywriter resume include?

A copywriter resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Headlines and Taglines, Landing Pages and Product Descriptions. Start bullets with verbs like Wrote, Concepted and Rewrote, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as HubSpot Content Marketing Certification, list it in its own section.

How to stand out as a copywriter applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Match your portfolio order to the posting

A role writing performance ads wants different samples up front than a brand campaign role. Move your closest work to the first slot of your portfolio and the first bullet of your resume. Use the posting's words for formats, such as lifecycle email or out-of-home. Keep both short, so the reader reaches your best piece fast. Tailor your copywriter resume

  • Make the cover letter a writing sample

Treat the cover letter as copy with a goal: get the interview. Open with one sharp line about their brand or a recent campaign. Show one result from your work that matches their need. End with your portfolio link and a clear ask. Keep it short and cut every sentence that does not earn its place. Write a copywriter cover letter

  • Prepare to walk through your book

Most copywriter interviews are portfolio walk-throughs. For each piece, prepare the brief, the problem, the ideas that died and why the final one won. Expect a copy test with a short brief and a tight deadline. Practice explaining feedback you disagreed with and how you handled it with the art director or client. Practice copywriter interview questions

  • Tighten every bullet like a headline

Copywriters get judged on their own resume lines. Run your bullets through a bullet generator to see alternate structures, then rewrite them in your own voice: verb first, the format, the brand type and one result. If a line would bore you in a client's ad, it will bore a creative director too. Sharpen your resume bullets

Copywriter resume questions

Should an agency copywriter resume look different from an in-house one?

Yes. Agency resumes lean on clients, campaigns, art director partnerships and awards or shortlists. In-house resumes lean on one brand's voice, volume across channels and measured results like conversion rate or email revenue. If you are switching sides, translate: agency writers should add any results data, and in-house writers should show the concept work and range behind their output.

What goes in a copywriter portfolio, and how many pieces?

Aim for six to ten pieces you are proud of, ordered with the closest match to the job first. Include at least one campaign concept, one long-form page and a few short formats like ads, emails or product names. Add a sentence on the brief and your role for each. A portfolio site, a PDF or a well-organized Google Drive folder all work if the link is easy to open.

Can I get hired with spec work only?

Many junior copywriters start with spec ads written for real brands without a client. It can work, especially from a portfolio school or bootcamp. Label spec pieces clearly so no one thinks a brand ran them. Strengthen the book with any real copy you have written, such as a small business website, a nonprofit appeal or freelance product descriptions.

Should I list AI writing tools on my resume?

List them if the posting mentions them or if you use them in a defined way, such as generating headline variants for testing or drafting alt versions for localization. Make clear that the voice and final copy are yours. Creative teams want writers who can judge and sharpen output, so describe your editing role rather than the tool.

What if the client never shared performance numbers?

Use the evidence you do have. That could be the client renewing, the campaign running for a second season, an award shortlist, a script that went to production or a quote from the brief owner. When you can, ask the account team for one approved metric before you leave a job. One real number on a resume beats five vague ones.
