Content Marketing Manager resume example

Content marketing managers are judged on the program, not single pieces. A head of marketing scanning your page wants the editorial strategy you set, the team and freelancers you ran, how content was distributed, and what it did for signups or pipeline. Writing samples still matter, but put the system first: briefs, calendar, budget, audits and the business numbers your content moved.

Common mistakes on a content marketing manager resume

  • Listing pieces when the job is the program

Fix: A list of articles you wrote reads like a writer resume. Lead with the program: how many pieces a month, how many contributors, which formats, and which goal it served. Then add one or two standout pieces as proof. "Ran a 16-piece monthly program with 5 freelancers" tells a hiring manager you can operate at the level they need.

  • Hiding the editorial system you built

Fix: Style guides, brief templates, workflow stages in Asana or Airtable, subject expert interview processes and CMS publishing checklists are management work. Say what you created and what it changed, such as fewer revision rounds or shorter time from brief to publish. These details show you can scale a team, not just a byline.

  • Ignoring content you refreshed or removed

Fix: Content audits are a core part of this role. If you refreshed decaying posts, merged overlapping articles or removed thin pages, report how many and what happened to traffic or rankings afterward. It shows judgment and a willingness to measure. Use the date range and the tool you used, such as Google Search Console or Semrush.

  • Stopping at publish

Fix: Content that nobody sees did not work. Show distribution: newsletter growth, social cutdowns, sales enablement versions, partner syndication or paid promotion of top assets. Give a number for at least one channel. Sales teams using your content in deals is especially persuasive, so mention any library or playbook you built for them.

What should a content marketing manager resume include?

A content marketing manager resume should open with a two or three line summary of your focus, then show each role as results rather than duties. Name the skills the posting asks for, such as Content Strategy, Editorial Calendar and Topic Clusters. Start bullets with verbs like Launched, Edited and Commissioned, and give each one a number where you honestly have one. If you hold a credential such as HubSpot Content Marketing Certification, list it in its own section.

Content Marketing Manager resume bullet examples

The numbers are illustrative. Keep the structure (verb, action, measurable result) and use figures you can back up.

  • Launched a 16-piece monthly content program with 5 freelancers, growing organic blog sessions from 40,000 to 115,000 a month in 14 months.
  • Refreshed 85 decaying articles and merged 30 overlapping posts, recovering first-page rankings for 120 tracked keywords within a quarter.
  • Commissioned and edited an annual industry benchmark report that generated 3,200 gated downloads in its first 60 days.
  • Built a brief template and two-stage review workflow that cut average revision rounds per article from 4 to 2.

  • Repurposed each flagship guide into 6 assets (social cutdowns, a webinar, a one-pager and an email series), doubling content-sourced demo requests.
  • Created a sales content library of 40 case studies and comparison pages, used by reps in 60% of late-stage opportunities.
  • Ran 24 subject expert interviews a quarter with engineers and customers, giving the blog first-hand detail competitors lacked.
  • Managed a content budget across freelancers, design and promotion, cutting cost per published piece 25% by moving to a retainer model.
  • Introduced AI-assisted outlining with mandatory expert review, raising output from 12 to 18 pieces a month with no drop in editorial quality scores.

How to stand out as a content marketing manager applicant

Tailor every application to the posting: the resume, the cover letter and the answers you prepare for the interview.

  • Lead with the content goal the posting names

Some content roles are built for organic traffic, others for pipeline, product education or brand authority. Read which goal appears first in the posting and move the bullet that proves it to the top of your current role. Mirror the formats they mention, such as research reports or video, and trim formats they never ask for. Optimize your resume for a content job

  • Write the cover letter like an editorial pitch

Your cover letter is a writing sample, so make it tight. Open with the program result that matches their goal. Then pitch two content ideas for their audience based on gaps you found on their blog. Close with a link to your portfolio. Keep it under 250 words and edit it as hard as you would edit a freelancer. Draft a content marketing cover letter

  • Prepare a content audit for the interview

Many content interviews include a take-home task or a question like "what would you change about our blog?" Prepare by reviewing their top pages, newsletter and gated assets. Bring three observations and a 90-day plan. Expect questions on how you measure content, how you manage freelancers and how you handle subject experts who miss deadlines. Practice content marketing interview questions

  • Check your keywords against real postings

Content marketing postings mix editorial terms with growth terms: topic clusters, content-influenced pipeline, demand generation, enablement. Paste two postings you want into a keyword matcher and see which of those terms your resume lacks. Add only the ones you can back with a bullet, and use the posting's exact phrasing where it is true for you. Match your resume to the posting's keywords

Content Marketing Manager resume questions

How do I show content's effect on revenue when attribution is messy?

Use the measure your company actually trusted and say which one it was. That might be first-touch signups from blog traffic, demo requests that viewed a guide, or opportunities influenced by content in your CRM. Name the model in plain words, such as "content-influenced pipeline in HubSpot." A smaller number with a clear source reads better than a large one nobody can check.

Should I include a portfolio if I mostly edited other people's work?

Yes. Link a short page with four to six pieces and a line under each on your role: commissioned, briefed, edited, rewrote or wrote. Add the result if you have it. Hiring managers for this role care about editorial judgment, so an edited piece with a clear before-and-after story is a fair sample. Ask permission before sharing anything that was ghostwritten.

How do I move from content writer to content marketing manager?

Collect evidence of ownership before you apply. Did you plan a quarter's calendar, brief freelancers, run a content audit or report on traffic and conversions? Put those duties first in your current role, even if your title still says writer. In the summary, state the program size you handled. Show one example of a decision you made from data, such as pruning or refreshing posts.

Does the HubSpot Content Marketing certification help?

It is free, widely recognized and shows you know the inbound vocabulary, so it is worth a line. It will not stand in for results. Senior roles care far more about a program you grew. If you hold it, pair it with a bullet showing a content framework you built, such as topic clusters, a pillar page program or a lead magnet series.

How should I describe AI tools in my content workflow?

Be specific and honest. Say which steps used AI, such as outlines, research summaries or first drafts, and what your editorial checks were: fact review, subject expert interviews, voice editing and plagiarism checks. Report the outcome, for example faster production at the same quality score. Avoid suggesting the tool wrote finished articles if editors rewrote them.
